AIBU to think that Boot cut jeans are back in?

I left the UK 11 years ago, I think skinnies were just coming into fashion at the time. Where we live now it is pretty hot all year round so rarely wear jeans.

We're moving back to the UK in November and I will need to do a fair bit of clothes shopping as I don't even own a winter coat. I've been looking online and noticed that Bootcut jeans seem to be in quite a few of them.

I look utterly crap in skinnies so if Bootcuts are no longer considered 'Mum Jeans' then my timing is impeccable.

Do people remember when jeans where a no-no for going out & the youth (myself included) wore those awful stretchy black bootcut trousers. I think they were bengaline fabric, I hope they don't come back in🤮🤮

TimeForLunch · 29/08/2020 21:17

My 13 year old DD will only wear bootcut/flares and thinks my skinnies are frumpy. I do believe flares are having a revival. Not sure whether to participate or not.

juggyty · 29/08/2020 21:19

@LioneIRichTea

1 looks ok because she's tiny on the hips & can wear high waisted.

2 can't stand that jean dragging on the floor thing, reminds me of Victoria Beckham & not practical in the rain at all.

3 again looks better because she's showing over the waist but untuck and could be the 90s

NationalBust · 29/08/2020 21:20

I lived in flares as a teen... bootcut are positively grown up for me!

I was 13 in 1997 and it was all about black stretchy bootcut trousers, big old Kappa/Adidas/Nike sweatshirt and chunky white trainers!
BigBlondeBimbo · 29/08/2020 21:43

I had Kappa bottoms with poppers along the side! They were my pride and joy 😂🙄.

juggyty · 29/08/2020 21:51

@hammeringinmyhead 🤣 Nice! One of my favourite outfits were said trousers with patent square toe boots from Ravel & a baggy Gap hoody, wtf?! 😊🤣

gingganggooleywotsit · 29/08/2020 21:53

I thought wide legged or 'mom jeans' were the fashion now. Both only look good on skinny young girls though. Envy

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 29/08/2020 22:00

Black boot cut trousers (non jeans) with a black skirt over the top. Cropped top, chunky platform shoes, butterfly clips and copious amounts of glitter = perfect for an evening drinking Shock
What was I thinking???

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 29/08/2020 22:01

gingganggooleywotsit I sadly find this is the case with most clothes!!!

ticktockcock · 29/08/2020 22:04

Does anyone know what carrot jeans are?!

onedayinthefuture · 29/08/2020 22:05

@RozHuntleysStump

I think bootcut is really unflattering and dated.
Agreed. I think the 80s style mom jeans, or a looser fit tapered style but not bootcut.

😂😂😂😂

Aw the 90s though!

I definitely wore the aforementioned, sexy Kappa bottoms with a crop top and trainers, with a high ponytail and a fuck tonne of makeup. Thought I looked the business 🤭.

And re the whole "you'll look as if you never stopped wearing them since the 90s" thing...meh. I think when these things come back in, as they always do, you stop thinking this. My mum said the same thing about bootcut / flares from the 70s when they came back in the 90s! "I'm not wearing those - I remember them the first time around"! A year or so later and they're everywhere and nobody seriously thinks anyone is still wearing their same pair from 1976!

The good thing is, we now have this thread! So we can look back in a year or two and see if the trend has stuck or not! Place your bets lads Grin.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/08/2020 22:12

At nearly 40 and looking fresh enough to get IDed (and alcohol refused if no ID) I embrace the fact that my student wardrobe is now genuinely vintage and trendy, and still fits Grin

Shame that jeans get worn to death though. Blasted thigh rub.

Oh yes they were a shocker and actually a version of those came out with a skirt over the top!
startinganew123 · 29/08/2020 22:19

Jeans are never outdated. Period. Any jeans. They are a staple and depending on the top half of your outfit will suit different jeans. Fashion isn't about what's 'in' but what goes together and what you like wearing

Sciencebabe · 29/08/2020 22:20

No to bootcut for me. Very 2000 casual mumsy. If skinnies aren't an option I'd go with a skirt or tailored trousers.

krustykittens · 29/08/2020 22:22

Myself and my daughters live in skinny jeans because we live on a smallholding and wear long yard boots everyday. They are practical and we love them. However, I love a straight cut jean or a slight boot cut and it has been impossible to get them, so I have bitten the bullet and am getting my 'going out' jeans from Levis. I think they do the best choices and good quality denim that last a long time. I did buy a pair of boot cut jeans from Next that look very nice but are paper thin! I think with jeans, as with everything else, wear what suits you and what you feel comfortable in. I have everything from my day to day skinnies to a lovely wide legged, high waisted pair from Karen Millen that I wear in the summer that have a 40s vibe. I really don't give a shit if people think I am trendy or not! I'm not planning on giving them up anytime soon either, even though women over the age of 50 shouldn't wear jeans, according to my mother! I also shouldn't have been wearing leather skirts past the age of 40, either. Hmm

Spiderbaby8 · 29/08/2020 22:26

I used to wear bootcut all the time as everyone used to say they were flattering for pear shape but they really looked bad on me, I can't stand to wear them anymore. It gives me 90s flashbacks.

DragonPie · 29/08/2020 22:40

The trouble with bootcuts & other 90s trends is unless you are a young adult & style them as such you tend to look like someone who has never let them go & is still stuck in the 90s

Exactly this! Hence my question about how do you wear them and not look dated (which I seem to have upset some people with Hmm)

I don’t want to look like I did 15-20 years ago. I’m older, I’ve changed, my body shape has changed. I don’t want to look like I’m still dressed for 2003.

Trekkerbabe · 29/08/2020 22:52

J Brand slim bootcut.. the best!!

Obviously, if you feel crap in them, don't wear bootcut jeans. But, if you're anything like me, to us the noughties might feel like yesterday, but actually, many fashionable young things were not even born in 2000! So, 90s trends do seem quite fresh now. What we think just happened was 20 years ago! Do you remember how long ago the 70s seemed when we were teenagers (or whatever) in the 90s?
Dancingtomusic · 29/08/2020 23:37

Does anyone remember the Diesel dirty denim bootcut jean?
It was a beautifully designed bootcut jean in a dark blue, almost petrol blue....dirty denim look.
They cost alot of money (i bought mine 2nd hand many years later) and they were cheaper copy versions of it but nothing beat the orginal Diesel dirty demin look jeans.
I am a short pear shape and these boot jeans with the highest platform sandals ever, made me feel like a supermodel.
Add the matching Diesel Jacket with a black bodysuit underneath....super cool look complete. I dont know how this look on me now I have my big mum tum Hmm

I never knew the girlfriend jeans were girlfriend jeans as i like the look of them...off to find them online....

DragonPie · 29/08/2020 23:40

Of course trends repeat themselves. I loved the 90s, it was the best time, I was at school and had a great time. I didn’t start wearing bootcuts until the 2000s.

But when I asked how do you wear them without looking dated, I meant if they are back now how are they being worn? I’m the same way? With block heeled boots and generally too short? With long tops? Because that’s what I remember (my jeans weren’t too short btw as I am short). I don’t want to look like I’ve stepped out of 2001, I fail to see how that’s unreasonable.

I totally get the above comment about looking like never having moved on from the 90s.

I was totally against skinny jeans when they first came out, now I love mine. But I’ll try something else if it suits me.
