AIBU to think that Boot cut jeans are back in?

I left the UK 11 years ago, I think skinnies were just coming into fashion at the time. Where we live now it is pretty hot all year round so rarely wear jeans.

We're moving back to the UK in November and I will need to do a fair bit of clothes shopping as I don't even own a winter coat. I've been looking online and noticed that Bootcut jeans seem to be in quite a few of them.

I look utterly crap in skinnies so if Bootcuts are no longer considered 'Mum Jeans' then my timing is impeccable.

@ChandosBucks

I'm another who wishes we could just have straight cut jeans! I'm tall (nearly 5'10") with a 34" inside leg and a size 12, but bootcut jeans make me look fat with short legs! I hate them! But I also hate the super-skinny look - but unfortunately, Primark is the only high street shop who do 34" options on jeans, and all of them in recent history have been skinny/super-skinny. I long for the day they bring back simply straight leg jeans in my leg length. New Look used to do decent 34" jeans, but currently none of them are any better in terms of design either (and I can't afford Long Tall Sally or Top Shop, which are the only other options for 34"+ leg lengths for ladies' jeans on the high street, as far as I know - happy to be given other recommendations though!)

So it's a 'no' from me for boot leg, but a huge 'yes' for straight leg - as long as I can get them in 34" inside leg! Grin

Chandos I am 5’11, size 10 and splashed out on some 34 long, 29 in waist 314 shaping straight jeans and they really are lovely. I think they will last years and my bum looks fantastic Grin

I am short and fat so anything skinny makes me look like some kind of overstuffed sausage. You can pry my boot cut jeans from my cold dead hands. 😂😂😂

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 29/08/2020 19:54

@JaneJeffer do you mind me asking where those Jeans are from?
I think I could do with some similar. Post lockdown my skinnies are now just....tight Sad

DrawerOfDoom · 29/08/2020 19:56

But how do you wear bootcut jeans without looking dated?

I haven't a clue what looking dated means! I just wear them. Usually with flat, trainer type shoes (so I can run after the DC) and a t-shirt/jumper/jacket combination depending on the weather.

Oryxx · 29/08/2020 20:00

Noooooo.....I hope not. I embraced bootcuts in the 90s and, because I’m short, spent most of the decade wearing jeans with frayed hems that were soggy to mid calf in winter. The bliss of skinnies is that I can tuck them into my boots in winter. I refuse to be parted from them.

Cotswolds10 · 29/08/2020 20:09

I was looking at jeans on the Zara website today and noticed that skinny jeans seemed to be far less in evidence than for many a good year, so I think you’re right, OP!

VainAbigail · 29/08/2020 20:16

@Northernsoullover

I bought Next enhancer jeans. Not skinny and not bootcut either. I'll see if I can find them because they were last years purchase
I have these jeans in black and they’re amazing!

And defo bootcut.

Winecurestiredness · 29/08/2020 20:21

The way things are currently in this country...if you're not wearing trackie bottoms everywhere, you care about what you look like!

Asuitablecat · 29/08/2020 20:21

But bootcut means you need different pairs to go with different shoes.
And are they still low rise? I wore bootcut and 70s men's flares from the mid 90s until shops stopped selling them. They looked good on my lanky, hipless young figure. Like a kind of shire horse.

All they're going to do now is draw attention to my hips.

JaneJeffer · 29/08/2020 20:24

@Needcoffeecoffeecoffee they're Principles Aimee. I've also ordered their Isla straight leg jeans.

damnthatanxiety · 29/08/2020 20:26

Yes bootcuts can work now BUT they need to be high waisted and worn with tops that show the top of the jean (tucked in or cropped) and not the low waisted bootcuts of yore. You will look like a Britney Spears throwback if you wear those

JaneJeffer · 29/08/2020 20:28

No way am I tucking in!

Flymetothetoon · 29/08/2020 20:30

@TheFaerieQueene

Bootcut are grim and often seen too short with a bad ankle boot/court underneath. See photo.

Go for a proper flare if you don’t want skinny.

Those are way too short
BigBlondeBimbo · 29/08/2020 20:33

Definitely not essential to tuck in. It is one of the ways people have been styling them in the magazines and online; high waisted, top tucked in, often with a belt. I have also seen it with tops untucked. I've seen it with trainers, heels loafers, long enough in length to go over the foot a bit and also short; around ankle length.

There's more than one way to boot a leg Grin.

I think people will style it in different ways according to body shape. I look horrendous with tops tucked into jeans, so I won't be doing it. Maybe a wee half tuck, but never a full tuck. Looks horrific on me, as my legs are already weirdly long compared to my torso, plus my tummy. No sir, no tucking for me today!

DolphinsAndNemesis · 29/08/2020 20:37

Are boot cut jeans back in style? Interesting. I won't wear them because they look horrendous on me. But they can look nice on other people. Unlike skinny jeans, which I think look terrible on 95% of people who wear them.

I very much hope that the fashion of high-waisted trousers dies out soon. That is another style I really can't wear, and it is becoming more and more difficult to find trousers with a lower waist.

OneForMeToo · 29/08/2020 20:40

I didn’t know they ever where in. When I wore them as a teen they where not and now in my 20’s they are not. They just get soggy and gross. A

juggyty · 29/08/2020 20:40

The trouble with bootcuts & other 90s trends is unless you are a young adult & style them as such you tend to look like someone who has never let them go & is still stuck in the 90s

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 29/08/2020 21:03

Thanks jane I never thought of looking there.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 29/08/2020 21:04

So if bootcut jeans are back does that mean wide combat trousers will be back too. Those pockets were ever so handy (although I dont think I had a mobile then...maybe a pager! Grin )

TheKeatingFive · 29/08/2020 21:07

This

LioneIRichTea · 29/08/2020 21:07

I really want a pair but why are they always ankle swingers! I don’t mind skinnies coming up short but think bootcuts need to be the right length. I’m not even tall I’m 5ft 9. Most shops like Topshop have seemingly got rid of their tall ranges too 😕

Pukkatea · 29/08/2020 21:07

I have a pair of cropped bootcut mid rise and I adore them, comfiest jeans ever. I wear them with chunky trainers and other 'current' fashion and they look way more interesting and fashionable than dull skinnies.

Still1nLove · 29/08/2020 21:08

Not just bootcut. Flares too!

Asuitablecat · 29/08/2020 21:08

We used to get our combats from.the army and navy stall on.the market!

lockdownalli · 29/08/2020 21:08

YANBU.

Bootcut are definitely back in and skinnies are out of fashion now.

However, I do agree with PP that you should just wear whatever you want.
