AIBU to think that Boot cut jeans are back in?

I left the UK 11 years ago, I think skinnies were just coming into fashion at the time. Where we live now it is pretty hot all year round so rarely wear jeans.

We're moving back to the UK in November and I will need to do a fair bit of clothes shopping as I don't even own a winter coat. I've been looking online and noticed that Bootcut jeans seem to be in quite a few of them.

I look utterly crap in skinnies so if Bootcuts are no longer considered 'Mum Jeans' then my timing is impeccable.

I think it's straight cut which is back in - so more of a boot cut than skinny, but not as flared as boot cut. Defo a more flattering fit than the skinnies :)

hammeringinmyhead · 29/08/2020 15:13

I can't do bootcut. Most of my ankle boots are lace-up and go over my jeans, like Dr Martens. I can't go back to round-toed boots poking out under bootcuts. I'm also a 31 leg so they are all too long and soak up water or too short!

Eatyourbanana · 29/08/2020 15:14

I’ve seen teenagers wearing really wide legged jeans, with battered trainers & crop tops. I don’t think they’re back in though (except for teenagers, maybe?) ‘mum jeans’ are very in. Could those work for you?

Bootcut and wide legged jeans are fine if you’re tall. They make smaller people look shorter and wider. I’ve been looking for jeans at Next online. Every single style is out of stock in my size. ‘Ask in store’ it says. Well, no. If I wanted to go into a shop I would, but I don’t, so that’s why I’m looking online.

I was just saying this last week. I've done some part-time work this summer in a field that entails contact with lots of people in their late teens to mid-20s. I can say with some authority that bootcut and mum jeans are in, skinnies are out

(However I will continue to wear my skinnies until I no longer have the strength to wiggle them on and off. Bootcut jeans give me awful 90s flashbacks and I never know what shoes to wear with them, especially when it's wet out)

Coffeecak3 · 29/08/2020 15:17

Bought boot cuts from Next and wore them last night for first time. Very happy with them.

BashfulClam · 29/08/2020 15:18

@KrabbyPatties

Boot cut only work if you are lean of thigh

My legs are not bad but complete tree trunks in bootcut!!

I cart all my weight on my things and arse and bootcut suit my better as the balance out my thickness.
SerenDippitty · 29/08/2020 15:19

I have thick inelegant ankles and look awful in cropped trousers. I can wear shorts though because everything looks more in proportion then.

BigBlondeBimbo · 29/08/2020 15:23

I saw someone walking down the street in them the other day. I live near London. I'm sure she isn't the only one, but I noticed her, as I have just bought some bootcut jeans.

The woman in question didn't look especially like a style queen. Just a normal young woman. She looked too young to be a mum on the school run...

All the mums on our school run are super stylish though, so not even sure what I mean by that statement myself 😂. Just responding to the person who said the only people she sees in bootcut jeans are mums on the school run!

The thing is though, everybody said skinnies were out last year, but they still seem to be around. There was also a pic of Kate Moss looking very stylish in bootcut trousers last year, so people were on about this then too.

In my wardrobe I have skinnies, girlfriend and the new pair of bootcut jeans. I'm not a slave to fashion or anything, but I think I look fairly current. .

It would make sense that bootcut is making a comeback though, as 90s style seems to be around a lot on normal people in the streets round here and I definitely remember bootcut being a big thing in the late 90s.

I will still wear skinnies though, as they are the best IME for cold weather which is cold and rainy, as they tuck into knee boots. This is for practical reasons though, as I like to wear knee boots in the cold rain to keep me cosy. I don't care about style at that point!

BigBlondeBimbo · 29/08/2020 15:23

I am very lean of thigh, shame about the rest of me.

thanksamillion · 29/08/2020 15:26

Very fashionable DD who is 15 and model proportions hasn't worn skinnies for over a year. She wears mum jeans, wide leg or bootleg (bordering on flares).

DragonPie · 29/08/2020 15:29

Bootcuts remind me of people wearing them with heels and them being far too short. Ankle flappers.

JaneJeffer · 29/08/2020 15:34

I ordered these a couple of days ago. I'll see what I think when they arrive. Can't see myself wearing the water absorbers of old though.

I never stopped wearing them either, in fact I am wearing a pair now (from Monsoon). My calves are too big to get slim-fit jeans on. It is muscle from running, rather than fat, but it doesn't make any difference to the size! So I can't rock the yummy mummy jeans tucked in boots look either.

Disneyvillain · 29/08/2020 15:38

H&M have a style called mini flares which are like a bootcut.

madcatladyforever · 29/08/2020 15:38

I've worn boot cut jeans forever, they really suit mu shape and I look great in them.
Skinny jeans wouldn't be skinny on me Grin

MinnieMousse · 29/08/2020 15:38

I think there's such a wide range of jeans available now that you can just wear whatever you want. It's not like a few years ago when everyone was in skinnies and nothing else.

Duffmcstockings · 29/08/2020 15:42

I've just bought a pair of Oasis Scarlet jeans off eBay. Nice bootcut, but could be a little higher on the waist. I haven't worn them out yet. I don't think they are wet weather jeans.

Nanalisa60 · 29/08/2020 15:44

I think people wear what suits there body shape now, which is a much better idea then following what the shops tell you what you have got to wear!!

WEAR WHAT SUITS YOUR BODY SHAPE!!

Sod what the fashionista tell you!! Be brave and work with your body to make the best of yourself!!

BigBlondeBimbo · 29/08/2020 15:51

I do agree with nanalisa, but, I think our perception of what looks good on our shape is still heavily influenced by what is fashionable.

I also agree that there is more choice now. It used to be one style of trousers was the shape for everyone and every shop. So even people with bigger tummies and muffin tops, not naming any names...cough...me...cough, had to wear hipsters 🤢😱. It was NOT a good look. Now, I think you can follow the trends you like and ignore the ones you don't. There is more choice and much more variety in shops now. Although, occasionally I will get stumped. Looking for a specific shape and colour, sometimes I won't have any luck. I wanted a grey, a line, midi skirt recently and couldn't find anything in the right shade of grey, so I ended up getting navy instead.

Sunnydaysarethebestdays · 29/08/2020 16:21

This is probably a really silly question but what are mum jeans?
I’ve tried google and it brings up Mom jeans which look like cropped skinnies?

Grapewrath · 29/08/2020 16:29

I think bootcut not so much but a flare is fashionable. It’s more gentle than the old 90s bootcut from what I’ve seen.
I loved my bootcuts but in retrospect they looked hideous on me. I do like a wide leg though both then and now

Bwlch · 29/08/2020 16:29

This is probably a really silly question but what are mum jeans?

mom jeans

noun informal

women's jeans of a style regarded as unfashionable or unflattering.

Katiemaggie · 29/08/2020 16:29

Never stopped wearing bootcut! I'll be chuffed if they become easier to find in the shops again 😊

niceupthedance · 29/08/2020 16:32
