AIBU to think that Boot cut jeans are back in?

I left the UK 11 years ago, I think skinnies were just coming into fashion at the time. Where we live now it is pretty hot all year round so rarely wear jeans.

We're moving back to the UK in November and I will need to do a fair bit of clothes shopping as I don't even own a winter coat. I've been looking online and noticed that Bootcut jeans seem to be in quite a few of them.

I look utterly crap in skinnies so if Bootcuts are no longer considered 'Mum Jeans' then my timing is impeccable.

@Bwlch

This is probably a really silly question but what are mum jeans?

mom jeans

noun informal

women's jeans of a style regarded as unfashionable or unflattering.

Yes, IME, "mum jeans" means a bit dowdy, unattractive, unflattering. Not terribly kind to mums though!

"Mom jeans" are a style of jeans, which I also see a lot and quite like! They do not suit me at all, which is why I have girlfriend, which are like boyfriend jeans, but slimmer.

DrawerOfDoom · 29/08/2020 16:34

I never stopped wearing them. They suit me and I find them comfortable.

Nor me! They're the only type of jeans that don't make me look ridiculous. One of my friends came shopping with me in an attempt to make me more fashionable and ended up admitting I need to wear bootcut. I hope they're coming back into fashion, about time I had a choice Smile

rattusrattus20 · 29/08/2020 16:34

skinnies were a macro/decade plus long trend to the extent that they've become a 'staple' of sorts, somewhat immune to fickle fashion trends. but, sure, young, 'with it' kids aren't wearing them in anything like the numbers they were even a year or two ago.

@DragonPie

But how do you wear bootcut jeans without looking dated? Genuinely asking.
Snap. Same thought in my mind. Want to give them a go, but fear I'll look like myself 15 years ago.
hammeringinmyhead · 29/08/2020 16:54

"Mom" jeans are so called because in the 1990s all the "moms" of teenagers wore high-waisted, loose-legged light wash jeans. If you google the Friends cast in jeans and white shirts, those are "Mom" jeans.

My issue is that I can wear skinnies to my office with any kind of shirt or top and boots or brogues but girl or boyfriend, mom jeans or bootcuts look too casual.

I also think that, while bootcuts are cut to create an optical illusion which you may or may not buy into, skinnies are just... leg shaped. Like denim leggings. I'm not sure they suit or do not suit anyone. They're just there, like a t-shirt.

Is that problem?

Namechanger87851 · 29/08/2020 16:57

They seem dated as hell to me however I remember thinking that about skinnies when they first came in . So whatever is in fashion ends up looking current and it won’t look dated to wear them.

WithIcePlease · 29/08/2020 16:59

Well I'm definitely not changing my ridiculous number of skinny jeans until I can go into a shop and try a few pairs on to compare them. Buying jeans is hard enough anyway.

AChooooo · 29/08/2020 17:03

I’ve always liked bootcut. Never been a fan of skinny jeans.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 29/08/2020 17:03

Another one welcoming bootcut back. I'm short and fat. Skinny jeans are awful on me bootcuts are kind to me. I'm of an age where I dont really care what's in or not and have learned not to squeeze myself into something that makes me look hideous just because its fashionable

Joeyandpacey · 29/08/2020 17:14

Barrel leg and mom jeans or boyfriend jeans are v popular

TheRealHousewife · 29/08/2020 17:41

Jeans confuse me.

Are ‘boyfriend’ jeans, ‘girlfriend’ jeans and ‘mom’ jeans all the same cut? On just perusing styles I can’t differentiate between them.

HoratiotheHorsefly · 29/08/2020 17:44

Dd is 21 and has recently bought a pair of boot ut trousers and a pair of bootcut jeans.

Yes they are back in with the youngsters along with those awful clunky, chunky90's shoes Grin

BigBlondeBimbo · 29/08/2020 17:45

My understanding is that boyfriend jeans are a straight cut, with a baggy fit. Girlfriend jeans are like boyfriend jeans, but narrower / more fitted. Mom jeans are a barrel cut, which balloon out and then back in again at the ankle. But people do seem to style all three in similar ways, but sometimes people only suit one of the styles. I only suit gf. My friend who is more pear shaped loves mom jeans and looks amazing in them.

Be young enough that they weren't in when you were a teen?

I speak as someone to whom that applies Grin

I like a good slim/boyfriend jean myself. Not as constraining as skinny, but without the old gimmer look a poorly flared bootcut gives you.

TheRealHousewife · 29/08/2020 18:10

Thank you @BigBlondeBimbo ... I think I need Spec Savers! I can see slight variations now you’ve spelt them out!

I am in my 50's . I am already "dated" I wear bootcut jeans cos skinny jeans look shit in me I have zero fucks to give
ZaraW · 29/08/2020 18:27

I haven't worn skinny jeans for a couple of years though they are practical in winter with ankle boots. I wear mostly straight leg Levis or Muji.

I won't be revisiting bootcuts.

ChandosBucks · 29/08/2020 18:31

I'm another who wishes we could just have straight cut jeans! I'm tall (nearly 5'10") with a 34" inside leg and a size 12, but bootcut jeans make me look fat with short legs! I hate them! But I also hate the super-skinny look - but unfortunately, Primark is the only high street shop who do 34" options on jeans, and all of them in recent history have been skinny/super-skinny. I long for the day they bring back simply straight leg jeans in my leg length. New Look used to do decent 34" jeans, but currently none of them are any better in terms of design either (and I can't afford Long Tall Sally or Top Shop, which are the only other options for 34"+ leg lengths for ladies' jeans on the high street, as far as I know - happy to be given other recommendations though!)

So it's a 'no' from me for boot leg, but a huge 'yes' for straight leg - as long as I can get them in 34" inside leg! Grin

hammeringinmyhead · 29/08/2020 18:38

Long Tall Sally is closing down this month unfortunately.

By not caring? I have no idea if anyone thinks I'm dated and quite frankly couldn't give a toss if they do. 😂😂
LouisBalfour · 29/08/2020 19:39

I used to love bootcuts back in the day, but I can't imagine wearing them now - they look so dated.

TheFaerieQueene · 29/08/2020 19:44

Bootcut are grim and often seen too short with a bad ankle boot/court underneath. See photo.

Go for a proper flare if you don’t want skinny.

AIBU to think that Boot cut jeans are back in?
Herja · 29/08/2020 19:44

I am at a uni with millions of young, fashionable people. Bootcut is definitely back in. Seemingly in every type of trouser too, not only jeans.

Well, they were pre lock down anyway. Fuck knows by now.

Goingdownto · 29/08/2020 19:46

@Nanalisa60

I think people wear what suits there body shape now, which is a much better idea then following what the shops tell you what you have got to wear!!

WEAR WHAT SUITS YOUR BODY SHAPE!!

Sod what the fashionista tell you!! Be brave and work with your body to make the best of yourself!!

Surely the whole point of having different shapes of jeans is to be able to do this? What a dilemma - wear jeans that balance me out and make me look objectively better, but make me "dated" and "frumpy", or wear jeans that I look tubby in but are more fashionable? I suppose it depends who I want to impress the most..
