To feel so angry at the prospect of a no deal Brexit

The clock is ticking now and this looks like the most likely scenario. It's not fair on the almost half the population who voted remain, and it's not fair even on those who voted leave because it's so different from what they were promised. And, to inflict this on the country in the middle of the pandemic is the last thing we need.

I agree. I'm angry too. I'm stunned at how badly this government has handled a lot of situations though.

BumbleBeeeeeee · 26/08/2020 23:15

Bumbling Boris the fucking clown has failed us time and again. It's a shit show all because of one man's ego, refusing to consider an extension or any kind of negotiation. But "we" voted for him like turkeys for fucking Christmas. Utter fucking dogshit.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 26/08/2020 23:18

I'm angry this isn't in the proper Brexit section.

But I'm not angry at the prospect of no deal in the slightest.

Schmoana · 26/08/2020 23:19

I’m resigned to it now. Any adverse economic impact will be lost in the mountain of Covid debt.

We would have been stronger in the EU and they would have been stronger with us, but hey ho “sovereignty” init? No wonder US and Russia are keen to see us out.

KenDodd · 26/08/2020 23:23

I would say this is what Leave voters want though. Brexit could have been overturned if Leave voters had changed their mind, they didn't. They voted repeatedly (by voting Tory) and determinedly for Brexit. The thing that appals me the most is the fact this endangers the peace in NI, yet Leave voters don't give a shit.

CherryPavlova · 26/08/2020 23:24

I’m furious at the whole corrupt business that will see many plunged into catastrophic poverty. All based on lies and gullibility.

Literally something affecting everyone's lives in this country. The government know from polls that if the vote was re run today then we'd be staying in the EU. People were lied to and now we're getting the hardest possible Brexit.

Interesting you see bringing it up in AIBU as inconvenient but no deal Brexit as not inconvenient. I wonder how we'll all feel in January.

Yes

Also Scotland has been shat on. It will be the end of the union.

I agree OP. And all because the public were lied to about the EU by Boris the Clown and his circus. But many fell for it. Rule Britannia innit.
Still many don’t know that Boris was taken to court for the lies he plastered all over that dumb red bus about the money he claimed we sent to the EU. Lies all of it for the sole purpose of getting him elected.
Well he’s suffering the consequences now.
And we’ll be suffering the consequences for decades to come as will our children.

Kitey73 · 26/08/2020 23:38

A minority of those that led the Brexit charge stand to make billions betting on a no deal Brexit, whilst the rest of us can look forward to a repeat of the empty supermarket shelves (think early days of Covid19) when lorries are backed up in Calais and Dover. To right I am very angry!

Pepperwort · 26/08/2020 23:39

Totally agree op. Food and medicine shortages, in a pandemic, with warnings about dire harvests this year. Just what we needed. This is supposed to be peace time.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 26/08/2020 23:41

Any adverse economic impact will be lost in the mountain of Covid debt

This is probably the part i find most galling

latticechaos · 26/08/2020 23:41

I'm just really despondent tbh. What a shitshow.

Hardbackwriter · 26/08/2020 23:42

I should be angry but I'm just really sad. It's so needless, so pointless and there will be no way back from the damage it causes.

I have to admit at some professional fascination as a historian who has worked on the formation of popular memory and myths; I thought I knew about these processes but watching such recent history being rewritten in front of our eyes, as the government just lies about what was said in 2016 until many people begin to believe that what they're saying is true, has been a real education.

Crankley · 26/08/2020 23:54

I think after four years you need to come to terms with the fact that this is happening. David Frost, the UK's Chief Negotiator is doing his best to get a deal and Michel Barnier has to understand that he is not in a position to impose anything on the UK.

Brexit could have been overturned if Leave voters had changed their mind, they didn't.

No, of course we didn't - why are you so surprised? Have you changed yours?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 26/08/2020 23:57

I f you seriously think this government ever had any intention of negotiating any sort of deal, then you are utterly delusional.

MinesAPintOfTea · 26/08/2020 23:57

I think after four years you need to come to terms with the fact that this is happening.

Brexit, yes. But no deal brexit is just purely irresponsible.

Sunshiney1981 · 26/08/2020 23:58

Because you were lied to!

Pepperwort · 26/08/2020 23:58

Crankley even the people who are forcing this on us swore blind that a no-deal scenario was not on the cards at the time.

I hope you will be the one to tell people who can't get critical medicines, or who can't afford inflated food prices, that they need to come to terms with it. In person.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 27/08/2020 00:08

I think after four years you need to come to terms with the fact that this is happening

Well yeah...

The whole OP is about ‘this happening’

Crankley · 27/08/2020 00:23

I voted leave after a great deal of research and my vote could have gone either way. I paid no attention to lies on both sides and they played no part in my decision.

I take critical medicine myself so no need to tell people. We don't know, that is fact. We have no idea what if anything will be affected but just like all the thousands of threads on here over the last four years by remainers, only the worst case scenario is ever considered. It's a bit like wish fulfillment and I think you're all going to be desperately disappointed if the sky doesn't fall in after we leave.

Sorry to add something positive to all the negativity.

Let me give you some good news from The Spectator earlier this month:

An article in the Dutch, left-leaning newspaper Het Parool led with the headline ‘Despite Brexit, multinationals prefer London over Amsterdam or Paris’ this week. The piece reports that ‘the feared exit [of companies] from Great Britain is not happening’ as expected, and highlights the fact that Unilever decided to:

Become fully British, scrapping its dual [Anglo-Dutch] structure [which has been in place for 90 years]. Its headquarters will be London and not Rotterdam, despite the avid attempts of Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Reportedly, the opportunity offered by London’s capital markets trumps any risks resulting from Brexit, an element that could also play a role in Shell possibly moving its headquarters from the Netherlands to the UK.

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/08/2020 00:29

Crankly I think you need to come to terms with the fact that because this is happening people are going to be furious for the foreseeable future.

Its going to be a mess. Frost is useless because they want no deal. The EU are protecting their interests because its their job.

The only upside is eventually we will have to get over our own ego and stop pretending we're some kind of superior country.

MoutardeVogue · 27/08/2020 00:41

I couldn’t care less really. Don’t want unelected (by us) politicians from other countries making decisions about our country.

In our system ‘almost half’ or sometimes more than half the population don’t get lots of things they voted for. Including the 56.4% of the population that didn’t vote for this government in 2019.

When did anybody in England vote for Nicola Sturgeon? She's a bigger influence on policy in England than BJ

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2020 01:16

Yes

No deal was where the govt always wanted to be.

Crashing out in the middle of a global recession is going to be interesting.

I voted leave but I hope it will be ok. I'm worried though.
