To feel so angry at the prospect of a no deal Brexit

The clock is ticking now and this looks like the most likely scenario. It's not fair on the almost half the population who voted remain, and it's not fair even on those who voted leave because it's so different from what they were promised. And, to inflict this on the country in the middle of the pandemic is the last thing we need.

Benefit number 2! I've got one!

  1. Increased employment opportunities for customs officials and other support staff dealing with the increased red tape for exports/imports.

Some people here are misunderstanding the situation regarding the block on state aid. The EU are not demanding the UK stick to EU rules on state aid. They have set out their position on state aid and are requesting details from the UK on their position on state aid so that negotiations can take place to see if a middle ground can be found. The UK are refusing to set out their position. How can anyone negotiate with a someone who won't tell you what they want?

It's what Dominic Cummings wants and what Dominic Cummings wants is what we get, because Johnson always does as Cummings tells him.

Leave voters swallowed all the lies and are going to be screwed over as much as us remain voters.

But all you meat eaters will no doubt love all that chlorine chicken and hormone enhanced beef when we sign up to the food standards that the USA will insist we adhere to when we buy their meat.

Sounds delicious.

The environmental impact of trading more with USA is barely ever mentioned too. It beggars belief , to me at least.

Haven't gone back yet to read other posts yet but quick response on this one.

the deal that the EU has agreed with South America and are hoping to ratify this year (Mercosur deal) also doesn't get much of a mention. Its completely unnecessary, shafts farmers within the EU and will encourage decimation of the Amazon Rainforest. It jars massively when they are at the same time championing their European Green Deal. If ratified (and I'm really hoping it won't be) it will put the environmental impact of any deal we might strike with America in the shade. It beggars belief, to me at least.

@KenDodd

What specifically do people think are, say, three advantages of leaving?
  1. Save 5p on a box of tampons.
  2. ... err..
Er not quite..... On 3 October 2018, new EU VAT rules that will allow the UK to stop taxing sanitary products were proposed by the European Parliament. However they would not be effective until January 2022 at the earliest so the benefit of Brexit is only for 1 year. I rather suspect that is another action by this government to win a popularity vote by claiming responsibility for something that was about to happen anyway. A bit like passing legislation to allow nurse to give flu vaccines......

Yes I suppose the £50 million of HMRC funding to enhance its Customs Grant Scheme might be seen as a benefit by some.

From 29 July 2020, organisations can apply for funding to reimburse a number of costs associated with increasing their capacity and enhancing their ability to complete customs declarations, ahead of the new rules from January 2021. I'm sure some will profit from this but it wouldn't have been necessary if we weren't facing Brexit.

CherryPavlova · 29/08/2020 16:27

A £705m funding package to help manage Britain's borders has been announced as the UK prepares to leave the EU customs union at the end of the year. I guess there is a planned 500 additional jobs funded by taking 10 million from that total.
Not huge numbers of additional staff exactly but huge additional costs.

One REAL benefit of a no deal Brexit will be the reduction in the UKs carbon emissions due to the reduced economic activity Grin

nosswith · 29/08/2020 16:36

I predict a last minute deal.

Brexit is the second worst act of economic self-harm ever inflicted on this country, and led to the worst, the current economically illiterate government.

Do you think the Tories are secretly on board with the green leavers then?
