To feel so angry at the prospect of a no deal Brexit

The clock is ticking now and this looks like the most likely scenario. It's not fair on the almost half the population who voted remain, and it's not fair even on those who voted leave because it's so different from what they were promised. And, to inflict this on the country in the middle of the pandemic is the last thing we need.

This government are really weak.

Why can't they do one thing effectively. Their whole platform was to get brexit done yet I see no efforts to get any deal. Anyone can just sit around and do nothing. Totally pathetic and makes the whole country look like an international laughing stock.

MindyStClaire · 27/08/2020 07:06

YANBU. I live in NI and I'm furious at the risk to the peace process.

I wonder how many of those championing Brexit (from government all the way down to posters on here) would be able to look me in the eye and tell me why it's ok to gamble with my children's future like this. Or the other 1.8 million or so people who live here.

MistressMounthaven · 27/08/2020 07:10

I've not met anyone who could name their MEP
Just saying

walksen · 27/08/2020 07:11

I couldn’t care less really. Don’t want unelected (by us) politicians from other countries making decisions about our country

Lots of people feel like this. Ironic then that Boris harps on about being stronger together when it comes to scotland!

The government is betting that faced with no deal the EU will concede last minute. I'm not sure it will work out that way but time will tell I suppose.

Monkeynuts18 · 27/08/2020 07:11

It’s deliberate, because as PP have said - when it’s an economic and social car crash, the government has Covid to blame it on. What a gift.

But yes, it is going to be a disaster. If people are scared now, just wait 6 months!

namechange34 · 27/08/2020 07:13

@MistressMounthaven I know many people who can't name our MEP. Personally I would make voting compulsory (as an Australian I am very comfortable with that premise, having grown up with it), but I expect most people here in the UK would prefer to keep it optional.

Shayisgreat · 27/08/2020 07:14

@Mindystclair because if you REALLY think about it, it will be short term pain for long term gain. (Obvious sarcasm hopefully)

I'm worried about NI as well. This government has been so irresponsible and clearly just don't give a fuck about the people or peace there.

Agree with a pp who suggested that Scotland and NI will become the new scapegoats when things go down the shitter.

namechange34 · 27/08/2020 07:14

^typo, should have read I know many people who can't name our MP

Bluewavescrashing · 27/08/2020 07:16

I'm building up a supply of various long life food to prepare for food shortages. It makes me feel a bit better.

AnnaMariaDreams · 27/08/2020 07:20

I’m resigned to it now. Terrified but what can I do?
Buying a lot of supplies.

Monkeynuts18 · 27/08/2020 07:23

Do you know who any of the following people are, without Googling (I’m assuming you live in England):

Nicola Sturgeon
Mark Drakeford
Arlene Foster
Dominic Cummings

Also, people who say they couldn’t care less - please tell me what you know that I don’t! Will the NHS be just fine? Those 3 million people who’ll lose their jobs as a result of Covid - will more jobs magically appear In January as a result of Brexit? I guess you think they will because the immigrants will go home?

Or is it just ‘I’m alright Jack?’

MistressMounthaven · 27/08/2020 07:23

It was Tony Blair's gov who made the deicision to allow free flow of eastern european workers into the UK. If he'd behaved like every other eu country we wouldn't have brexit now.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/08/2020 07:30

That’ll be Eastern European workers picking fruit during the pandemic because British folk don’t generally want to do it.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 27/08/2020 07:35

I take critical medicine myself so no need to tell people. We don't know, that is fact.

You appear to be confusing “I don’t know, and I have my head in the sand” with “medicines supply chain experts don’t know”.

The existing shortages will get worse. Pharma has already said it can’t create a 6 week stockpile this time.

Porcupineinwaiting · 27/08/2020 07:36

I'm just wondering whether all the people who voted for this inevitable outcome and going to like it half as much as they thought they would. But vote for it they did, once in 2016 and again last Dec. Let's hope you can eat patriotic fervour.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 27/08/2020 07:37

Eastern European nurses and carers looking after our sick and elderly...
Notthefutureyet · 27/08/2020 07:45

Funnily enough the "oven ready deal" promised in the election doesn't exist. Boris should be sacked for knowingly fucking the country up, along with the rest of his cronies.

yeOldeTrout · 27/08/2020 07:46

"the polls" also predicted an overwhelming remain result

That's a myth.
... ok, depends how you define "overwhelming" and what you point in time you take. I think "Overwhelming" should be >= 60%, and only polls in the last 6 months before the Referendum should count. But you can follow this link to see how voting intentions were almost evenly divided right from mid-2015.

28 Jan 2016, Yougov 42% of British people would now vote to leave the European Union and 38% would vote to remain a member.

24 Feb 2016 Yougov 37% Remain, 38% Leave, 25% Don’t know or wouldn’t vote

20 April 2016 ITV News 40% Leave, 51% Remain, 9% Other

31 May 2016 Guardian 52-48 split in favour of leaving the EU

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 27/08/2020 07:58

Truth is it's always been apparent (to anyone who cared enough to REALLY think about it) that leaving would be difficult in the short term but be beneficial in the long term

Jacob Rees Mogg said it will take 50 years for our economy to recover and get back to where it is today, and he said that before the pandemic.

I don’t have 50 years and my child will be 60 when by JRM’s prediction we will be back where we are today. That doesn’t sound beneficial that instead of 50 years of progress, we put 65 million people though shit just to be back where they were 50 years ago. Even my children’s grandchildren won’t thank us.

Don’t worry, JRM will be ok. He stands to make a fortune out of a no-deal Brexit. As do a lot of the other chaos capitalists. They don’t care about how ordinary people will suffer. In face, that’s rather the point.

Sunshiney1981 · 27/08/2020 08:09

Foreign workers prop up our food supply chain and our care sector. Not to mention the NHS. I’m still astounded at the naivety of leave voters who don’t know this and want to block the flow of immigrants.

Like a pp said, during the pandemic the government had to fly in extra Eastern European workers to pick our fruit and vegetables because almost zero Brits would do it. And yet those same people refusing to do those types have this old fashioned misguided view of sovereignty. It’s beyond naive.

The fact is we live in a global world now. We are a tiny island and should not be cutting ties with our closest neighbours. Like others on here I worry so much about my children’s future.

nicky7654 · 27/08/2020 08:11

I'm happy Labour were not voted in! The people have spoken thank goodness. This country will become great again once the robbing EU are off our hands. Most corrupt organisation ever!!!

Sunshiney1981 · 27/08/2020 08:21

That line ‘this country will become great again’ makes me want to vomit.

It’s beyond naive. It smacks of a time of imperialism when we used to sail off around the world conquering “uncivilized” nations and singing ‘Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves’. Vomit.

‘The robbing EU’ was what Boris and his gang wanted you to believe.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 27/08/2020 08:26

I think you're all going to be desperately disappointed if the sky doesn't fall in after we leave

Why make silly comments, i like a bit of positivity

You missed the slave trade off that list

Wow, I wish I had the brains to REALLY think about it Grin

Same lattice 😀

That rees mogg fella ...how long did he thought it would take 🤔

And he was looking on the bright side!
