Media blackout on marches happening today

orangesnapples · 22/08/2020 15:23

Is it me or is it not very strange that 1000s of people currently marching though our major cities today and no media coverage?

They are marching for our children's rights, to awareness to trafficking etc

Does the lack of coverage just play into the hands of those that accuse the media of being part of the problem.

They are currently peacefully marching to bring awareness because there sadly is hardly any awareness of trafficking, most people have the completely strep typical idea of what trafficking is, that is all some world wide elite club.
But the sad truth it looks very different, and is probably happening in a home near you right now.

So why no coverage. My SM is flooded with 1000s I f people walking the streets of Liverpool, London etc.

I don't want to believe there is darkness in control of our media and what we see etc but honestly I can't think for the life of me why this isn't being covered.

The BBC seems to have an aversion to reporting almost any march or demo. I am not sure why.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 22/08/2020 15:31

I knew nothing about this. It is very important so I wish there was coverage. It is realy weird that there isn't tbh Yanbu OP!

BilboBercow · 22/08/2020 15:31

Isn't the whole "Save our Children" thing linked to a lol of conspiracy theory stuff? The people I've seen using that hashtag are also sharing Wayfair and Pizzagate conspiracy theories

Bishybarnybee · 22/08/2020 15:33

I can't find any information on line about Save Our Children UK, which makes me wonder who is organising the protests, what exactly they are protesting about and how many people are actually there. That's not really looking like thousands. Can you give us some more information about who has organized it and why?

catgirl1976 · 22/08/2020 15:37

That looks like a handful of people to me and I think there's a few different causes being protested with a lot of conspiracy theory rubbish attached. So YABU as it's hardly newsworthy

I came here to say something similar. A lot of well meaning people, I'm sure, but led by those in need of tin hats.

orangesnapples · 22/08/2020 15:41

No I thought that pizza gate etc but they are very much. Fact based and focus on the daily numbers of missing children, lenient sentences. The group IIv bern following don't push the other stuff.
For instance they are trying to make awareness that trafficking is not what conspiracy would have you believe.
This is the problem people get stuck on the conspiracy stuff and brush the whole subject away, when in actuality it's very real.
There are some iffy facts at the moment for the big organisation save the children.
But this is a movement and use both save our children and save the children.

I think you're right, seems linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory too. I found this about marches in the US:

TheFuckingDogs · 22/08/2020 15:41

Can you give us your definition of what trafficking is - I presume I have a stereotypical idea of what it is - am interested to hear a different perspective? Can you share a link of who has set up these demos etc

Soundbyte · 22/08/2020 15:42

YANBU.

While I don’t generally state things about the media being quiet with regards to certain issues and extremely vocal about others..

Ofc you’re not wrong.

Trafficking satisfies a large demand. Child trafficking even more so.

What can we do? Genuine question.

Rhine · 22/08/2020 15:43

Marches and demos happen all the time in major cities. Very few of them actually make the news unless there’s any trouble.

I have a nagging feeling that all of this ties in with far right wing pizzagate nonsense. They also have a chip on their shoulder about what they call the ‘main stream media’ for not reporting on these ridiculing conspiracies.

NailsNeedDoing · 22/08/2020 15:44

This happens with many protests and marches, unfortunately no one notices until it’s the thing they care most about that is being protested and ignored.

It always upset me how little coverage the protests against Israeli bombing in Gaza gets, because it’s ignorance that allows the evil to continue.

Aragog · 22/08/2020 15:44

Wonder if this was what the protest was about in Sheffield today. Could only see from across the road. Was only a handful of people though. Seemed to be a woman with a megaphone and a handful of others stood in front of her with banners.

Re why not being mentioned in media. There are protests in most towns and cities every weekend. You rarely see any, unless it is huge numbers, mentioned in the press ime.

BilboBercow · 22/08/2020 15:45

That's great op but unfortunately they picked a poor name if they genuinely want to be taken seriously because I imagine if there's genuinely thousands of people taking part in protests it's because save the children and save our children are linked to nut job conspiracies.

Child trafficking is illegal and there's a worldwide fight to stop it, does the group have aims other than raising awareness?

Lockheart · 22/08/2020 15:45
  • Private Facebook page for the organisers
  • Dark group profile picture of children with a rainbow painted on their face
  • Absolutely no information on them from google
  • Low quality photos of a small crowd
  • Lack of clear signage

I'm going to be generous and this isn't a bunch of whackjob conspiracy theorists or right wing activists who want to save their children from "the gays" - 'Save Our Children' was a well known American anti-gay movement and the use of the name is incredibly ill-advised.

You need to actually publicise things more if you want news coverage. You can't just get a bunch of your mates together with no clear mission statement and expect to make the six o'clock news.

orangesnapples · 22/08/2020 15:45

This looks like a handful of people to you ? Ok
I don't think the police would shut down the roads for a handful of people.

Regardless of the conspiracy theories, the fact remains
Children are being hurt.
At least these people are trying to help

Any links to anywhere with more info about what todays marches are about?

TheFuckingDogs · 22/08/2020 15:46

Yes as others have said if course actual protests about stuff are obviously massively underreported a lot of the time - pretty certain this is linked to weird conspiracy stuff so probably best to ignore it. Actual child trafficking is of course real and horrendous and this probably somewhat takes away from the enormity of that

Lockheart · 22/08/2020 15:47

A poor grasp of English is also usually a give away of right-wing loons.

Just saying OP.

canigooutyet · 22/08/2020 15:47

If very few people know about the marches or what the represent then how are they trying to help?

TheFuckingDogs · 22/08/2020 15:48

Yes of course children are being hurt but can you be more specific? Many people “help” with real child trafficking all the time, it’s still a massive problem but there’s plenty of people “helping”
What is it these people are actually protesting about?

orangesnapples · 22/08/2020 15:48

Sorry o forgot the pictures.
And I think your sadly right. It has been high jacked by the conspiracy but jobs but there are other groups.

Genuine question, what are they doing that is helping trafficked children? Are these folk supporting existing international anti trafficking networks etc?
Antifa123 · 22/08/2020 15:51

The one in Nottingham has very quickly become very fascist looking which is possibly why the mainstream media isn't giving the bottom feeders any attention

Gancanny · 22/08/2020 15:52

What can we do? Genuine question

  • write to your MP and ask him/her to support measures that tackle human trafficking, aid victims, and punish perpetrators
  • know where your stuff comes from and who is providing your services. Who picked that fruit, sewed that t-shirt, painted your nails, cut your grass, and so on
  • be aware of industries that often use traffickers workers and be sure to only use legitimate providers
  • if you can then donate time or money to organisations who work against human trafficking
  • write to the governors of your child's school and ask them to discuss human trafficking as part of wider social education
  • talk about trafficking with your children and teens in the same way that when they were small you taught them to hold your hand for the road and not to go off with anyone without your knowledge
