What's your dream job?

I work in theatres (neuro) and it's good but I do worry about still being in this role when I retire! I like it but it's so stressful, on calls nearly every week, you have to be there within 30 mins day or night, angry surgeons etc etc. I think I'll wait until my husband gets his next big promotion up to 150k and I don't have to contribute my wages and then retrain. This is an agreed plan of action, he wants me to be happy and I'm so lucky I've got him.

So what would you retrain as? Or what is your dream job? I've been an odp for so long now I can't even think!

I was thinking 'theatres, how lovely?', but not those theatres.

I'd like to be a tourist guide around a major city, pointing out quirky buildings and tales of the past.

Gobbycop · 19/08/2020 17:18

I'm very happy in my role as it was hard earned, armed police uk.

I'd trade it in to be a fighter pilot. I dicked about too much at school though so no chance of ever achieving that.

Whoshorseisthat · 19/08/2020 17:19

@leafeater haha! I'd love to work in that kind of theatre!

BaconsLaw · 19/08/2020 17:22

Actor or police.

I'm not even close to either.

Whoshorseisthat · 19/08/2020 17:23

@Gobbycop oh wow! Armed police!

I'm a nurse, also toying with the idea of leaving and doing something else completely. The last few months have made me realise life is too short to stay doing something that I don't love, and although I love some of my colleagues, some of them really grind me down. I day dream about being a dog walker, personal trainer or yoga instructor (I'm not particularly fit or good at yoga, which may be a problem Grin).

Currently applying for nursing jobs outside of the hospital to see if I can be passionate about a different role. But if not then I will be seriously looking at retraining in something else, and doing agency work to fund it. I might look into a career coach to get some ideas.

Pinkmakeupbag · 19/08/2020 17:32

Sounds mad but I really really would have loved to be an actor in a soap. I'm sure I'd be terrible and it would be much harder than it looks but it's just something I'd always have loved to do.

Either that or a writer. I've got loads of good story ideas for a fiction book but I'm a crap writer in reality.

Popc0rn · 19/08/2020 17:35

But my dream job when I was younger was to own a bakery or a florist.

TrufflePioneer · 19/08/2020 17:38

If I weren't quite such a bleeding heart and had been better at science, I'd have been a vet.

As it is I like my chosen career (financial services), and I'm now one 2nd interview away from reaching the pinnacle that I've worked 20 years for in terms of maximum status/hierarchy and salary. But really trying not to get my hopes up...

Radio 4 continuity announcer. Or the reader for Book of the Week/Book at Bedtime. I just really love reading aloud.

evensong11 · 19/08/2020 18:08

I would love to manage a museum or art gallery. Somewhere such as the V+A.

Never going to happen though.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 19/08/2020 18:11

Conflict photographer. Not now I have kids though.

Midlifelights · 19/08/2020 18:11

Working for the British Antarctic survey as a scientist of some kind. Or a marine biologist.

All not possible at all with my English degree & 2 kids 😂

I did want to be a pilot at one point but I was never much good at maths/physics.

msbevvy · 19/08/2020 18:17

I always wanted to be the person who makes the big Lego models in stores.

I have a varied wish list:

Bridal shop owner
B&B owner (high end)
Animal trainer (horses) for movies
Running a therapy centre using horses - as Churchill once said: “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”
