What's your dream job?

I work in theatres (neuro) and it's good but I do worry about still being in this role when I retire! I like it but it's so stressful, on calls nearly every week, you have to be there within 30 mins day or night, angry surgeons etc etc. I think I'll wait until my husband gets his next big promotion up to 150k and I don't have to contribute my wages and then retrain. This is an agreed plan of action, he wants me to be happy and I'm so lucky I've got him.

So what would you retrain as? Or what is your dream job? I've been an odp for so long now I can't even think!

I would also like to be a tour guide when I am old but on organised tours abroad. Probably old people’s ones if I am realistic. Or an actress, that has always been my dream, but I don’t think I am natural enough sadly. I worry about what opportunities there will be for me to work on in my 60s as I don’t see anyone of that age in my industry really.

My dream is to work for Disney. Preferably as an animator but seeing as I've spent my career so far in Service Design within Marketing I'd also quite happily take a marketing role for Disney as well 🙂

Trailing1 · 20/08/2020 09:18

I would love to be an interior designer

notforonesecond · 20/08/2020 09:33

I’ve always wanted to own a teddy hospital.

Peccary · 20/08/2020 09:40

Archaeologist. I did a degree and travelled to some great places volunteering but the prospects are so poor outside academia. I am a scientist now which I do enjoy

FluffyKittensinabasket · 20/08/2020 10:00

Lottery winner. Who wants to go to work?!

readingismycardio · 20/08/2020 10:00

I love the "darling, I have no dream job, I do not dream of labour" quoteGrin

joke aside:
Fbi agent
Very fancy boutique hotel owner
High end wedding planner

I'm kinda already in my dream job. I'm a Veterinary Nurse, although never wanted to be one growing up. I knew I wanted to work with animals, but it was only when I got sent to a vets for work experience (for my animal care NVQ), that I realised vet nursing was for me!
21 years later, and i still can't imagine doing anything else Grin My only gripe is the pay - disgustingly low for the responsibility/knowledge we have (but vet surgeons are on crap wages too).

GoingBackTo505 · 20/08/2020 11:11

Makeup Artist for films/big fashion shows/magazine shoots etc. Closest I got was working on a department store makeup counter in my early 20's.

wolfmom · 20/08/2020 11:12

My dream for as long as I can remember was to be a nurse. I was part way through training when I became ill so no nursing for me. Now anything that can be done around my frequent crashes, working towards IT

The80sweregreat · 20/08/2020 11:13

An Actress or ' something in the city' ( which is impossible as I'm rubbish with computers and maths )
Maybe in another life! 😀

CalicoTheCat · 20/08/2020 11:19

Illustrator. Although it's also my hobby and I wouldn't want to not enjoy it anymore if it became my job.

Maybe running a small quirky art gallery in a lovely location instead.

madcatladyforever · 20/08/2020 11:22

Lottery millionaire retired.

ChrissyPlummer · 20/08/2020 11:26

Actress, book shop owner/librarian, make up artist.

I’m still tentatively thinking of dipping my toe in to being an MUA by taking lessons at an academy close to me when they’re available again. Realistically won’t happen as a profession for me now but I’d love to be able to create amazing looks for myself.

JuniperFather · 20/08/2020 11:28

Covid track and trace call centre worker, so I can finish the third season of Ozark and write my novel in peace.

The80sweregreat · 20/08/2020 11:32

I'm still waiting for the big lottery win after nearly 25 years in a syndicate !
I have huge plans when we do 'hit the jackpot ' but I'll probably be about 85 by then and too old or frail to do much with it !
Have to leave it to the kids .. grr 😠

HalloumiFries · 20/08/2020 11:34

I dream of being a writer. I have lots of ideas for characters but very few plots in which to put them. The few plot ideas I do have are heavily influenced in my own life and my family would disown me if I ever wrote about them publicly.

Ideally though, I'd win the lottery and not have to work for money again but I would volunteer with animals a few days per week - maybe at a donkey sanctuary. Or I'd train guide dog puppies.

The80sweregreat · 20/08/2020 11:41

I'd love to be able to write too.
I'm the same regards to characters but finding anything original to write about is hard and as I like physiological thrillers I think they would say ' it's the same as all the others ' and never get published anyway.

Satsuma2 · 20/08/2020 11:44

I'd love to be a radio announcer, certainly got the face for it. Being a lottery millionaire would be great as I could then volunteer at different things that interest me without it becoming the drudgery of a full time job.

beguilingeyes · 20/08/2020 11:48

Backing vocalist for Pink Floyd. That ship has pretty much sailed :)

Standrewsschool · 20/08/2020 11:51

Growing up it was to be a teacher of deaf children. Started doing my PGCE, and realised teaching wasn’t for me.

I envy all the backstage theatre opportunities dcs have today, so I guess it would be theatre related.

Standrewsschool · 20/08/2020 11:52

Or a bookshop owner.

BreconBeBuggered · 20/08/2020 11:58

I want people to email me on a regular basis to request generously-paid newspaper and magazine columns requiring little research beyond what's already inside my own head. I'm great at deadlines but have no drive or connections, so there's no possibility of finding myself in this kind of demand through my own persistence.
Second choice would be editing the work of someone who's not quite ready to have it eviscerated by professionals, but doesn't want their own grammatical and spelling mistakes to make them look like a tit.

Justgivemesomepeace · 20/08/2020 12:01

Id love to be a paramedic but im 49 with 2 kids and couldnt do the shifts. So i had a rethink. I would love to work in an estate agents going out valuing property. I took voluntary redundancy in March and have landed a job in an estate agents! Start September. Hopefully I can get some experience and learn to be a valuer. I was shaking when they offered me the job. Probably doesnt sound much to some people but I cant believe I did it.
