What's your dream job?

I work in theatres (neuro) and it's good but I do worry about still being in this role when I retire! I like it but it's so stressful, on calls nearly every week, you have to be there within 30 mins day or night, angry surgeons etc etc. I think I'll wait until my husband gets his next big promotion up to 150k and I don't have to contribute my wages and then retrain. This is an agreed plan of action, he wants me to be happy and I'm so lucky I've got him.

So what would you retrain as? Or what is your dream job? I've been an odp for so long now I can't even think!

@Alongcameacat

I have a few

Concert pianist. I daydream about walking onto a stage, taking my place and everyone falling silent in awe at the beautiful music I am making. I can't even play the piano!

Hotel reviewer. I'd love to travel around, stay in lovely places and get paid for it!

Wood or stone carver. I'd love to spend my days chiselling stone or wood into objects Then polish them up and have people buy them.

Restorer I've watched too many episodes of the Repair Shop and am in awe of their skills.

I could go on and on.......

Oh I used to dream of being a hotel reviewer in my late teens. Always loved travelling and I just love staying in hotels. Never perused it and wouldn't even know where to start but what an amazing job

I'd love to own a little lgbtq+ cafe that doubles as a safe space for people (particularly teens but could apply to anyone) to come and hangout if they have parents/family/friends who don't accept them. And need someone just to relax and be themselves.
I dreamed of having somewhere like this when I was 17/18. Just someone I could meet more people "like me"

Irreversible · 20/08/2020 12:13

I'd love to be a writer - still hoping to get there but it's so difficult to get published Sad

My other dream job would be a detective specialising in cold cases. I'm a crime buff and cold cases have always fascinated me.

When I was young I always wanted to have a job as cabin crew. That didn't happen😂

Like a few others have said, I have a few things on my wish list that won't happen, but I can dream 😂

Childrens doctor.
To have a food truck specialsing in vegan food.
Author of childrens books.
To help other women who have or are going through domestic violence.

The80sweregreat · 20/08/2020 12:22

Do they still have hotel reviewers? I've not read one by one person in years.
If I want to know what it's like I generally go on trip advisor but it's hard then as many people have different 'views' on what they like or dislike and it can put people off , when really it's a fab place to stay.
A travel writer would be a good job and I used to think being a tour rep would be fun too : until I met one who told me it's mostly dealing with endless problems and how some just like to go on holiday in order to have a constant moan ! Maybe not ( I'm too old now for any of these jobs)

Something to do with maps. I realise atlases and road maps are probably on the way out but digital maps fascinate me.

ThatDamnScientist · 20/08/2020 12:30

My absolute dream job would in infectious disease research. I'm just starting a biology degree with the OU. My plan is to transfer to a brick after level 2 modules (I'm currently a carer to a disabled child but hoping things will be more settled) and study microbiology from year two. Then onto research postgraduate.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 20/08/2020 12:43

Lottery winner. Who wants to go to work?!

I do!

HelenaNightSoilCart · 20/08/2020 12:49

I do have an awesome job at the moment- musician and teacher - but I recently learnt how to make silver jewellery and I’d love to be a silversmith if I didn’t have to worry about paying the bills.

Byllis · 20/08/2020 12:50

Being responsible for a collection at the British Museum - the dream job that would suit me to a tee.

Master mariner - I like the idea of this from a romantic perspective because I find shipping and the sea absolutely fascinating and what could top working in this industry than being master mariner? I would actually be hopelessly unsuited, though: I like working on my own, am most definitely not always cool, calm and collected under pressure, and worst of all would find sailing in less than calm waters terrifying!

I hope you manage this! My eldest dd is part of the LGBTQ+ community, she has a group she attends but at 19 (a little while off yet) she won't be able to attend anymore - there doesn't seem to be much else locally. There are a couple of youths in her group who have to lie to their family about being at the group or what it is about and it makes me so sad.

Goyle · 20/08/2020 13:03

Work in a city gallery, museum, auction house or country house. I love history.

CaveMum · 20/08/2020 19:01

My cousin was a hotel reviewer for several years, he got to stay in some amazing places and basically wrote up the summaries that go in travel brochures.

He then got a job working as part of the organising team for the 2012 Olympics Torch Relay.

He seems to be one of those people that has amazing/interesting jobs.

LuckyBitches · 20/08/2020 19:24

Vicar. Riding my bike around the village, offering distraught old ladies cups of tea in the vicarage etc.

allthingsred · 20/08/2020 19:27

Love to be a social worker. If I had the money to retrain I would do this. I looked into it a few years ago. Couldn't do the degree without a placement couldn't get a placement without a degree!!

Katiecoooooo · 20/08/2020 19:29

Would have loved to be a midwife.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 20/08/2020 19:32

I’m always amazed that people actually want to go to work. Let alone that being cabin crew is a dream job - I’ve done it and there is nothing special about it! 😂

LST · 20/08/2020 19:35

Kittens. Anything to do with kittens.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 20/08/2020 19:42

Oh so many of these I would love to do!

My ultimate dream, if money and talent were not a consideration, would be to be a dancer. Not pop necessarily, but contemporary dance and ballet.

Irl, I am no dancer! I want to be a teacher or maybe lecture or tutor at university some day. Either that or a counsellor of some kind.
