to be really bothered by a thread title, to complain about it & not be satisfied with the response?

Maybe gross blasphemy is acceptable in the UK these days. Maybe I'm too sensitive. Tell me what you think:

Regarding a certain thread title "oh my f*cking god". I complained about it to MN, saying it was unacceptable, especially as a thread title, where you can't avoid it. I asked that it be deleted. I'm not easily offended but this was beyond the pale for me. Here's the response I got from MN:

Hi there
Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We agree that this comment was in poor taste but we don't tend to delete on
those grounds because it would be really hard to know where to draw the line

  • what one person thinks is funny can be another person's sensitive spot and the truth is we don't think we should be the arbiters of what people should fine offensive and what they shouldn't. On the whole we think it's better to let the boards self police in these instances, as it's very rare that a tasteless comment is left unchallenged. Certainly in this case, it wasn't and the OP has apologised. Best wishes

I'm not satisfied that in this case it would be "really hard to know where to draw the line".

yes I think Unquietdad has been quite harsh on this thread personally

1crazymumof2 · 03/10/2007 09:54

Howdydoody, i was'nt saying that she was sensitive because she held these views, i actually agreed that she was NBU. I felt however that the comment 'maybe gross blasphemy is acceptable in the uk', was oversensitive.

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 03/10/2007 09:54

why can't we say spiders but we can use god?

allhallows · 03/10/2007 09:54

It would be incredibly easy to be upset by some of the responses posted in response to my AIBU. The aggressivity & spite is amazing.

I am an atheist and I wasn't offended exactly by the thread title. But I didn't like it. It was the "fucking" rather than the "God" than bothered me. I don't specially want to have words which I find ugly, unpleasant and vulgar on my screen every time I log on! I think it's fine to use words lkike that in the heat of the moment - hammer dropped on foot, enormous spider runing across living room. But I don't really think the heat of the moment extends to going across to the computer, logging on to an online forum, clicking through to chat, clicking through to add new thread........I think I might have calmed down a bit by then!

StrawberryMartini · 03/10/2007 09:55

Hang on a min, you mean I can't start a thread title with the word SPIDER in it but I can start one that's blasphemous?

LucyJones · 03/10/2007 09:56

I think you have a point but peple in general don't like it when MNHQ is criticised which is why you've got a few 'not nice' comments

TrinityRhino · 03/10/2007 09:56

I guess for alot of people the fact that franny gets scared by the word 'spider' is something they can emathise with and understand.
On the other hand the fact that god doesn't exist means they just don't see how it can be so upsetting.

UnquietDad · 03/10/2007 09:56

I think some religious people sit there waiting to be offended. It's almost as if there's some deep-seated masochistic pleasure in it.

StrawberryMartini · 03/10/2007 09:57

Well that I find ridiculous.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 03/10/2007 09:57

I find the thread title somewat ofensive but that's OK, I just wouldn't click on it, and that's not going to kill me!

Not keen on swearing in thread titles anyway but you know, MN is supposed to be a discussion cummunity- increasingly poeple seem to be attemptng to stifle that. If only certain POVs become acceptable then what's the whole point?

compo · 03/10/2007 09:58

what a load of tosh

compo · 03/10/2007 09:58

that was to UnquietDad's latest nasty post

UnquietDad · 03/10/2007 10:01

FGS (there we go again) I am not being nasty. I'm just trying to show that there is another side to this. Sometimes I just get so fed up with having to tiptoe around the religious in case we "offend" them. All sorts of things are potentially offensive - some people will take offence at the word "cheese". Or "vomit". But it seems to be particularly endemic to the religious that they want to throw their hands up and scream "oooh, I'm offended" at the first opportunity.

If your god existed he wouldn't GIVE A TOSS about people insulting him. I'm sure he'd have bigger concerns.

allhallows · 03/10/2007 10:02

I knew I would get some flack but I didn't realise how very vicious it would be. Hard to not take personally.

I have to leave now. Thank you for your comments.

Surely it should be AIBP(am I being precious/petulant) or AINS(am I not special). You got a reasonable response from mnhq.

I would have been a lot more tolerant allhallows if you had not made that quip about muslims

If your faith is so easily offended it must be difficult for you to walk out the door.FGS.

compo · 03/10/2007 10:04

you see I think it's the opposite of that
it's seems to happen a lot more regualrly that people play the race card all the time whilst Christians generally sit back and say nothing whilst their god's name is taken in vin in every other sentence in modern day Britain

niceglasses · 03/10/2007 10:04

Ah well yes, that was a bit harsh.

mumblechum · 03/10/2007 10:05

Hear Hear UQD

NotQuiteCockney · 03/10/2007 10:06

Thread titles with "spider" in them aren't something anyone complains to MNHQ about - they're just something some of us try to avoid, to be polite.

UnquietDad · 03/10/2007 10:06

But what's this "taking in vain" business all about? really? Would god be bothered? Humans - we do have an overweening sense of our own importance in the universe sometimes.

cornsilk · 03/10/2007 10:06

Compo - 'play the race card' - what on earth is that supposed to mean. I HATE that phrase.

ComeOVeneer · 03/10/2007 10:07

YANBU to be offended by the title, we all have our levels of what we find offensive/unacceptable, YANBU to complain about it, that is your right. However I think YABU to not be satisfied with their response, it was polite and to the point, and YABU to start this thread as others have said the OP apologised, meant no disrespect and asked MN to do something about it, which they did many many hours before you started this thread.

compo · 03/10/2007 10:07

I apologise for that phrase and hope it didn't offend anyone

I am aware that God wouldn't be offended (!) but that doesn't mean that AllHallows views and feelins are meaningless does it?

compo · 03/10/2007 10:08

I agree with you UQ in that it is very easy to offend people as I seem to have done already
Think I better leave this now.
