to be really bothered by a thread title, to complain about it & not be satisfied with the response?

Maybe gross blasphemy is acceptable in the UK these days. Maybe I'm too sensitive. Tell me what you think:

Regarding a certain thread title "oh my f*cking god". I complained about it to MN, saying it was unacceptable, especially as a thread title, where you can't avoid it. I asked that it be deleted. I'm not easily offended but this was beyond the pale for me. Here's the response I got from MN:

Hi there
Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We agree that this comment was in poor taste but we don't tend to delete on
those grounds because it would be really hard to know where to draw the line

  • what one person thinks is funny can be another person's sensitive spot and the truth is we don't think we should be the arbiters of what people should fine offensive and what they shouldn't. On the whole we think it's better to let the boards self police in these instances, as it's very rare that a tasteless comment is left unchallenged. Certainly in this case, it wasn't and the OP has apologised. Best wishes

I'm not satisfied that in this case it would be "really hard to know where to draw the line".

Perhaps Netmums would be a better place for those of a sensitive disposition.

As I said before, if you think god exists then he/she/it is big enough - literally - for this not to matter. Seriously. What is it with religion and "respect"?

StrawberryMartini · 03/10/2007 09:41

I think there's a difference between being offended by a skinny dog and being offended by blasphemy.

allhallows · 03/10/2007 09:42

What is it with our current society and the lack of respect?

OP posts:
1crazymumof2 · 03/10/2007 09:42

Yanbu because the thread title offended you, however the op apologised profusely, and the swearword was removed.
I think youre being oversensitive saying all of the uk accept gross blasphemy because one poster in a moment of shock posted this.

allhallows · 03/10/2007 09:42

Or decency.

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 03/10/2007 09:42

I think it was clear that the OP didn't intend any offence at all, she apologised to those who were offended, and the thread title was changed as well.
Response from MN Towers seems perfectly reasonable and sensible also.
YABU, sorry.

bozza · 03/10/2007 09:43

I agree that YANBU. I did open the thread expecting something really major and was rather underwhelmed that it was only a spider and she claimed not to be arachnaphobic so total over-reaction to come up with an offensive thread title like that IMO.

suey2 · 03/10/2007 09:44

but god is such a generic word, where allah isn't. If the poster was referring to zeus would you find it offensive? greek and roman gods have been around a lot longer than christian ones. God= deity in my book

SharpMolarBear · 03/10/2007 09:44

why can't there be more respect generally

bozza · 03/10/2007 09:44

And thread with original title was in active conversations for much of yesterday.

scareybee · 03/10/2007 09:45

OFGS - this is nothing to do with religion and everything to do with the fact that god is regularly used as an expletive in English. Like the way we call someone a bastard or a wanker - it's disassociated from the original meaning. If you want to challenge the way our language has developed, then feel free within your own little world but don't try and imply that there is any anti-xtian feeling behind it. That's plain silly.

I'm quite cross now

niceglasses · 03/10/2007 09:45

I don't see what else you would like to happen

She apologised, more than once.
It wasn't meant in an offensive way.
You had a reasoned response from MNHQ.
The title was changed.

I think, rather, the issue is with your deeply held beliefs. Which is fine, but you can not force this on others - it just doesn't work that way.

allhallows · 03/10/2007 09:45

I didn't check the thread title again. MNHQ might have told me they'd deleted it, instead of saying that it would be "really hard to draw the line".

Howdydoody · 03/10/2007 09:47

Why do those who object have to be labelled "sensitive"? It always come across as a slightly patronising word for people who dislike something others find acceptable.

To me Allah isnt real but i wouldnt say in front of people who believed in him "Oh my * Allah" and then say " Just get over it" if they were offended. It's about respecting others.

A thread a while ago was about a child saying something to a little boy about Germans that then upset the other boy's family. The 1st boy apologised even tho he may of thought it was ok to say it he was mature enough not to have the "well it's not offensive to me so get over it" attitude

If you didn't notice it had been changed then you obviously could avoid it

cornsilk · 03/10/2007 09:48

It wasn't intended to offend. OP aplologised. YABU

ShaunOfTheThread · 03/10/2007 09:49

I understand there is some sort of policy about reference to spiders. Could it be extended to cover religious sensibilities....

'Oh my fucking Loofah'

..or some such.

allhallows · 03/10/2007 09:49

No scrap-causing intended.

OP posts:
StrawberryMartini · 03/10/2007 09:49

Good post Howdy.

niceglasses · 03/10/2007 09:51

I don't think anyone has been told to 'get over it' in this instance. I think pple have apologised, repeatedly, reasoned and moved on. And perhaps will think harder next time.

I think this is quite the opposite of being told to 'get over it'. I think it is a measured response.

allhallows · 03/10/2007 09:52

I like a debate, though.

For some people, "god" is just a word. Get over it.
