to be really bothered by a thread title, to complain about it & not be satisfied with the response?

Maybe gross blasphemy is acceptable in the UK these days. Maybe I'm too sensitive. Tell me what you think:

Regarding a certain thread title "oh my f*cking god". I complained about it to MN, saying it was unacceptable, especially as a thread title, where you can't avoid it. I asked that it be deleted. I'm not easily offended but this was beyond the pale for me. Here's the response I got from MN:

Hi there
Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We agree that this comment was in poor taste but we don't tend to delete on
those grounds because it would be really hard to know where to draw the line

  • what one person thinks is funny can be another person's sensitive spot and the truth is we don't think we should be the arbiters of what people should fine offensive and what they shouldn't. On the whole we think it's better to let the boards self police in these instances, as it's very rare that a tasteless comment is left unchallenged. Certainly in this case, it wasn't and the OP has apologised. Best wishes

I'm not satisfied that in this case it would be "really hard to know where to draw the line".

fwiw, I didn't like the title of the thread much - not very funny or clever, but I absolutely love 'Christ of a bike' as an expletive.

lucykate · 03/10/2007 12:25

i don't see the point of this thread, the title in question was changed, the op apologised, if you have an issue with mnhq with their response to you, then take it up with mnhq directly, don't trawl it across the talk board

allhallows · 03/10/2007 12:29

Okay, let's drop it because:

a. MNHQ did remove the offensive (if only to me!) title - thank you, MNHQ - & yes of course their response was polite (why would it be anything else?);

b. My question has been answered. Was I being unreasonable? Yes, probably, given the context of the use of God and fuck. I'm also terrified of spiders & would have sworn myself blue in a similar situation, although it's unlikely I would have posted it as a thread title.

NQC "Gosh, Christians really are the underdogs in this society." Exactly!! That is exactly what I think. There are christians in the House of Lords, the head of state is the 'defender of the faith', most of our public holidays are based on christian saints days or holy days of some kind, shopping is restricted on Sunday because it is the Christian day of rest. The CofE and the Catholic churches are some of the wealthiest land owners in the country. How exactly are Christians the underdogs? Which is why perhaps it is seen as more important to take account of Muslim sensibilities. And let's face it, there are plenty of people out there prepared to thoroughly and deliberately offensive to Muslims in word and deed.

I think it is very important to be civil and polite to other people and to avoid causing deliberate offence, but the title in question wasn't meant to offend, it might have been ill-judged but that was all.

And changing the thread title seems to have addressed your original concerns perfectly well. So yes YABU.

OrmIrian · 03/10/2007 12:32

Ah just seen your last post allhallows

Tinker · 03/10/2007 12:41

I complained. Nothing to do with god (who doesn't exist ) but just because it was a rubbish lazy unimaginative use of a perfectly good swear word.

TrinityRhino · 03/10/2007 12:42

roffle

AliciaMum · 03/10/2007 12:47

I find it odd that Mumsnet hq delete threads that don't really need to be deleted but leave offensive ones remaining .

TheQueenOfQuotes · 03/10/2007 12:49

well I'm a Christian and yes I do find that thread title a little shocking - but I'd hardly say it's deletable......

Kewcumber · 03/10/2007 12:52

is god really christian?

Thought various religions had a god - isn't that the point of a religion? I don't even think god was capuitalised was it? She could easily have been referring to a roman deity... they weren't christian last time I checked.

I too am not a massive fan of the language used sometimes on MN, but then I'm not a massive fan of casual swearing generally. IMO using bad language regularly spoils it for those of us who want to have a big swear fest when something major goes wrong only to find that no-one turns a hair at our atrocious language.

Wouldn't dream of complaining about it either here or in RL unless it was in an inappropriate place like In The Night Garden. (though for all I know thats exactly what the tombliboos are saying)

Rytzy · 03/10/2007 12:55

ok, time to go and clean the oven.... how's yours>

TheCurseOfTheMhummy · 03/10/2007 12:57

What/who is/are tombilboo/tombilboos?

Kewcumber · 03/10/2007 12:59

Mhummy - I'm guessing your DC's are too old to watch "in the night garden" then?

TheCurseOfTheMhummy · 03/10/2007 13:03

Well yes dd is 21 so I guess she's more likely to be found In the nightclub.

Ds is 6 but will only watc the Disney channel and High school bloody musical.

AliciaMum · 03/10/2007 13:08

DS (2) loves in the night garden - he particularly like iggle piggle and DD (5) loves the tombliboos . She pretends she's not watching it (as she is too old- so she says) but she likes it too.

SpawnChorus · 03/10/2007 13:08

Sorry - I haven;t had a chance to read all of this thread, and didn't see the original title, but was 'god' capitalised?

If not, then tbh I don't see how it could be offensive. It could have referred to any god. Aphrodite, or Venus perhaps

Spidermama · 03/10/2007 13:14

I've seen it used regularly on here and people use it all the time to express amazement, horror ... it's derived from OMG with the F put in for extra emphasis.

I think it's fine and MN's response correct, but I also defend your right to make your views known and educate others about stuff which might offend.

So YANBU, but neither is MN Towers.

ENID!

and yes, the loofah thing is an affectionate joke, not a MNHQ policy. And I can't refrain from a at people who thought it was.

Spidermama · 03/10/2007 13:23

OMG I didn't notice. Hi Enid.

coffincarrier · 03/10/2007 13:25

lol an MN policy not to say spider
yes, of course it is a terrible shame that we have abolished the death penalty for blasphemy.
luckily people can still be sent to prison, though

CountessDracula · 03/10/2007 13:27

what is wrong with christ on a bike?

For all we know he did have a bike
(not that he exists imo)

willow · 03/10/2007 13:29

Bet it was a chopper - his dad bought for him without his mum knowing.
