to be really bothered by a thread title, to complain about it & not be satisfied with the response?

Maybe gross blasphemy is acceptable in the UK these days. Maybe I'm too sensitive. Tell me what you think:

Regarding a certain thread title "oh my f*cking god". I complained about it to MN, saying it was unacceptable, especially as a thread title, where you can't avoid it. I asked that it be deleted. I'm not easily offended but this was beyond the pale for me. Here's the response I got from MN:

Hi there
Many thanks for bringing this to our attention.
We agree that this comment was in poor taste but we don't tend to delete on
those grounds because it would be really hard to know where to draw the line

  • what one person thinks is funny can be another person's sensitive spot and the truth is we don't think we should be the arbiters of what people should fine offensive and what they shouldn't. On the whole we think it's better to let the boards self police in these instances, as it's very rare that a tasteless comment is left unchallenged. Certainly in this case, it wasn't and the OP has apologised. Best wishes

I'm not satisfied that in this case it would be "really hard to know where to draw the line".

There are some really uptight and precious people on here that seem to get upset when we don't all fall into line behind them and go off in a strop when they are challenged.

Silly really.

Thank f*king gd we are not all the same.

bossykate · 03/10/2007 10:26

Enid??? You're back!!!

1crazymumof2 · 03/10/2007 10:26

Yes vive la blardy difference!

CountessDracula · 03/10/2007 10:28

not read the rest of hte responses

yes you are being unreasonable
I'm sure there are plenty of websites for sensitive types like you, maybe a religious one would suit you better. Mumsnet does not subscribe to any religion and OMFG is a commonly used phrase in this country.

Plus the title has been amended to remove the fucking - or maybe you just have an issue with OMG

CountessDracula · 03/10/2007 10:28

oh hurrah hurrah

Eeeeeeeeeeeeniiiiiddd

we have missed you!

Bundle · 03/10/2007 10:29

snort @ enid being tempted back by blaspheming

geekymummy · 03/10/2007 10:30

YANBU!

lionheart · 03/10/2007 10:37

I think the loofah thing was a joke, not an edict.

TheCurseOfTheMhummy · 03/10/2007 10:38

So skerrymum, I take it if we ever do manage to meet up, it will be five bloody Mary's as opposed to hail Mary's then?

TheCurseOfTheMhummy · 03/10/2007 10:41

Oh no apostrophe in the wrong place, as a lapsed Catholic, I know where I'm headed so.

no, you are definitely not being unreasonable, very offensive, well done for complaining.

contentiouscat · 03/10/2007 10:50

I have complained in the past when a poster has told someone else to "f*ck off" because its basically uncecessary, there are so many more intelligent ways to let someone know you dont agree with them.

But whilst I guess it wasn't necessary to use the word in the thread title, once I read the OP it just made me laugh,

Of course if we were on a childrens forum my answer would have been different here we should all be adults on and must have heard it at some time.

contentiouscat · 03/10/2007 10:52

Oh just read the whole thread sorry youre complaining about the use of the word "god" sorry i'm an aetheist so im inclined to think anyone who believes in God is only slightly less disturbing than someone who thinks they have been abducted by aliens.

TinyGang · 03/10/2007 10:53

YANBU to complain. I thought it was in poor taste too. I think the reply you got was ok though and the op did apologise.

sixlostmonkeys · 03/10/2007 11:01

I get abducted by aliens every Wednesday morning. I've just been dropped off. I was there for a week, but obviously it's like in Doctor Who so it was just a few minutes 'our time'
I asked them if OP was being unreasonable and they told me god is fine with all language and communication but regrets creating high horses.

Apparently aliens get upset at the mis-use of the word 'spanner' though

TrinityRhino · 03/10/2007 11:05

roffle six

Marina · 03/10/2007 11:14

Enid has been tempted back by blasphemy AND animals, make of that what you will

SueBarooeeooeeooooo · 03/10/2007 11:16

What a lot of old cobblers. The F-word was a bit in yer face and they changed it.

The word 'god' is generic. If she'd said 'Yahweh' or 'Jehovah' or 'Jesus Christ', then it would be offensive towards something specific, and it would have been rather difficult to see as a believer.

Having said that, most people I know wouldn't do it to deliberately offend a Christian. I have asked politely if people would mind not using those terms before now, but if they carry on regardless, that's up to them.

People know that Christians won't try and chop their heads off for saying those things and that's a good thing, not a reason why Christians are oppressed in this country.

Honestly, speak to some persecuted North Korean or Chinese believers and get over yourself.

InMyHumbleOpinion · 03/10/2007 11:19

Jeez Louise, do you walk around with earplugs in?

If the OP said Oh my fucking god, without the cap[ital letter, then they could have meant any god at all, including their own personal god. They could have been refering to Aether, god of air, for all you know.

SueBarooeeooeeooooo · 03/10/2007 11:20

precisely, IMHO.

jofeb04 · 03/10/2007 11:26

InMyHumbleOpinion,
Have to say I agree with you. The God could have been any God.

IMO, YABU

Nightynight · 03/10/2007 12:09

I always see "Christ on a bike" in a totally literal way, so have some sympathy with allhallows.

sixlostmonkeys · 03/10/2007 12:16

christ is in a side-car round here - not literally of course - so never taken literally....

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 03/10/2007 12:16

having thought about this(and having eaten so brain working)
I remeber starting a thread where the tittle cause a lot of offence. it is a horrid place to be.
so KM apologise for posting in a negative way about your thread.
