DH says I’m an embarrassing nerd

Hindsite · 11/08/2020 11:35

I play the Sims. I have lately taken to building and have built a number of homes. I’m getting really into it and have renovated a whole town. I have created an instagram page for my Sims game and share all my builds on there as well as my stories. My next project is making an abandoned Wild West town like the ones we have come across in America. This will likely take a month or so and then once I’m done I’ll move families into it who will then renovate the town.

Last night DH came across my Instagram and went off on one saying I’m a complete giant nerd and he sent the pics to all his family and to his mate. His mate asked if him if I’ve stopped playing grandma turismo because he kept beaten me. DH didn’t know I was playing this car game online with his mate and is now saying I’m an embarrassment and I’ll be the joke of his work place.

Wtf. Is it really so bad to have interests that don’t affect anyone else even if I am a Middle Aged woman?

I am annoyed that you don't get to have a "thing" with Joker though....he's my virtual crush.

I like Joker too, he has a great sense of humour. I would have loved to be able to be romantically involved with him too, though i did love him asking Shepherd advice/approval about his relationship with EDI.

InFiveMins · 13/08/2020 18:21

I'm 30 and have played sims for 19 years. No embarrassment at all - it's an amazing game!!!

SideEyeing · 13/08/2020 18:24

Not RTFT but I'd be making my next insta post a Sim with his name.. In the pool.. Minus a ladder.

CrepuscularCritter · 13/08/2020 19:12

Your houses look fab OP. I can never understand why someone would rain on another's pleasures. I'm also an official Middle Aged Gamer, with Civ and Elvenar being my games of choice. I can see how much The Sims have evolved since I played what must be decades ago. Carry on enjoying!

Pasghetti · 13/08/2020 19:45

SIMS FANS!

Excuse the attention seeking bold type Grin I'm going to download the base game and expansion pack deal. Which expansion packs are the best? Island Life? Work? Any ideas?

Also I want vampires but is it an expansion pack?

jerometheturnipking · 13/08/2020 20:25

@Pasghetti It'll depend on what you like in the game :) I love the Tiny Living stuff pack - there are some really nice modern bits of furniture and it's quite cheap. Seasons is a good expansion if you like changing weather/temperature variability. If you send a Sim outside in the wrong clothes when it's freezing they can freeze to death Grin or they can be struck by lightning during a thunder storm. It makes it a bit more life-like.
Cats & Dogs is good for, well, cats and dogs. I haven't got Island Life.

The Parenthood game pack is quite a good option I think - not a full expansion but it introduces a lot of game play and it makes the parenting side of having a Sim family more rewarding/interesting. I always think that toddlers/kids are a bit of an inconvenience in the game, but that pack helps things.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 13/08/2020 20:37

I'm a life-long gamer and also LARPer for a while. It was only women who would give me the head tilt and say how sad I am. But when I think of the fun I have with gaming and pretending to be a videogame character whenever I exercise, the cool places I've been and the things I've done from my professional nerdity want to be the saddest nerd EVER!

PhilSwagielka · 13/08/2020 20:43

And LARPing involves hanging out with people. There's no way anyone can call LARPers insular and antisocial.

It's not my cup of tea but I know people who do it, men and women alike.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 13/08/2020 20:47

LARPing also showed me that men being less bitchy than women is also a myth!

Pasghetti · 13/08/2020 21:50

Thanks @jerometheturnipking Any other suggestions?

Dee1975 · 13/08/2020 21:52

I’m a middle aged women and play candy crush every day ...!

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 13/08/2020 21:54

OP you could watch GrayStillPlays on inventive ways to torture Sims

TinkersTailor · 14/08/2020 02:18

If you're a geek, I am too. I've been playing since DD went to bed (7 Grin) and have only just signed off for the night.

Sims is incredibly addictive. I bought a new expansion pack today (Get Famous) and I've been making my Sims actors/actresses. Hours of fun!
I have tons of towns with different story lines. Families going off to university, becoming mermaids, training to be doctors..
I've just completed the generation challenge Grin
Super nerd.

You're more talented than me, I'm shite at building.

Tell your husband to take a long walk off a short cliff. There's nothing wrong with having a hobby. He should look into one himself, therapy sessions maybe?

Completely agree, expansion packs really make the game.
I play through Origin, I have a membership which I pay about £7 a month for and the packs are really cheap (55% discount.)
They also have an option to pick your own bundle where you choose 3 different packs for £33.

I have nearly all of them now (see, mega geekGrin) My favourites are back to work, parenthood, seasons, pets and (my minds gone blank of the name) the vacation pack. Combined they make the game a lot of fun.

Isinknot · 14/08/2020 02:32

He sounds awful. YANBU.

squeekums · 14/08/2020 03:26

Think of the hours you could have been doing something meaningful. Charity work, keeping fit, a interior design course for example. It’s all good to have downtime but having enough time to build that much seems like you are wasting your 1 shot at life

Ugh how boring, enjoying myself is no waste of life
Doing something cos i feel i should or to take some moral high ground, screw that, thats a waste of my life, my heart aint in it

Do you not have anything better to do with your time? What a waste
Its a waste to you cos you dont enjoy it
Its something the OP enjoys, therefore not a waste of time.

it's not just older people who think that either, sadly. I've seen plenty of young geeks, not all male either, who think that once a woman turns 30 she should give up all fannish hobbies and devote herself to knitting, doing her taxes and raising the kids. Sure, there's nothing wrong with knitting but not all of us are into it

Yep so many people are shocked or find it weird i STILL like wrestling, i was supposed to switch off the love once dd was born i gather and start knitting, scrap booking and yoga. Same for my mad footy supporting.
I hate the way womens sport is seen as 2nd rate, barely spoken of or put down by people who claim to love the game.

Astrid09 · 14/08/2020 04:50

@Hindsite I really felt for you when I read your post it would really upset me if my husband spoke to me like that.
I use the design home app and post my designs on Instagram and enjoy following others to see how they see the same room.
I can't believe people posting "have you nothing better to do with your time" some people what Netflix why shouldn't you play Sims instead.
Enjoy building your Towns up i love the background of the family in your game i never realised how big Sims can be and the different types of towns. I might give it a go.
The way I get pictures from one device to the other to use on Instagram is by taking a screenshot and email it to myself or my gaming email address. Hope that helps.

WelshMoth · 14/08/2020 05:03

Not in any way shape or form a gamer - but have just YouTubed Sims for the building of houses.

Wow!!

Thanks m hoping to try and picture a renovation project I'm pursuing. Is Sims something I could use?!

Tonp · 14/08/2020 05:35

OMG he is horrible
When my DP found out I play sims he thought it was cute!
I suggest you make a sim version of him then lock him in an empty room and wait for him to die.

tmh88 · 14/08/2020 08:31

@Tonp love it Grin

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 14/08/2020 08:55

Some replies here are so rude and clueless.
My gaming hobby has given me so much joy over the years. I've travelled to London, Reykjavik, Prague and Copenhagen to meet the friends I've met online. I have made friends for life, I've had so so much fun, and now I've met my partner while gaming. Funnily enough we do manage to do other things like go to the beach, walking in the hills, etc - we don't sit there 24/7 with the blinds drawn, furiously wanking over pixels!
But yes, maybe I should have an interior design course instead.

Bunnymumy · 14/08/2020 10:24

@WelshMoth
I built and redecorated the house I'm in atm (on sims 3) so that I could decide what I wanted to do with it when I moved in :)

Love the sims series. With the exception of 4. I must of spent over 100 quid on expansions for 4 and it's STILL boring in comparison to the prior installments.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 14/08/2020 10:46

Don't forget op - when you do decide to get rid of your H you have to wave and say "Soon soon!"

Pasghetti · 14/08/2020 13:47

Is Sims 4 much of an upgrade on Sims 3? I have lots of Sims 3 expansion packs so am a bit reluctant to throw more money at it if it's just the same with better graphics. Also saw that Sims 5 is coming...
