DH says I’m an embarrassing nerd

Hindsite · 11/08/2020 11:35

I play the Sims. I have lately taken to building and have built a number of homes. I’m getting really into it and have renovated a whole town. I have created an instagram page for my Sims game and share all my builds on there as well as my stories. My next project is making an abandoned Wild West town like the ones we have come across in America. This will likely take a month or so and then once I’m done I’ll move families into it who will then renovate the town.

Last night DH came across my Instagram and went off on one saying I’m a complete giant nerd and he sent the pics to all his family and to his mate. His mate asked if him if I’ve stopped playing grandma turismo because he kept beaten me. DH didn’t know I was playing this car game online with his mate and is now saying I’m an embarrassment and I’ll be the joke of his work place.

Wtf. Is it really so bad to have interests that don’t affect anyone else even if I am a Middle Aged woman?

I'm thirty-odd and love the sims. I enjoy looking at sim pages on instagram, especially the makeover ones.

I worried that DP would think I was sad but he plays on various PS4 games. Its our way of shutting the world out and unwinding.

Your DP sounds like a bellend. There are plenty of non-bellend men out there OP, ditch yours and find someone who appreciates your excellent sims building skills 😁

Sibsmum · 12/08/2020 17:29

Can you build him a shack in the Middle of nowhere and move him inGrin

Rtruth · 12/08/2020 17:35

Wow!

I can’t believe the amount of people who think this is ok!

Think of the hours you could have been doing something meaningful. Charity work, keeping fit, a interior design course for example. It’s all good to have downtime but having enough time to build that much seems like you are wasting your 1 shot at life.

DanceItOut · 12/08/2020 17:38

I’ve played sims since being a teenager. Also many other games. On laptop, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo. My husband never understood how I could be such a nerd but he didn’t make me out to be a joke either. Once he came home to find me on the sitting room floor with the Xbox 360 in pieces because it broke so I was replacing the disc drive.

Personally I prefer forza to grand tourismo haven’t played grand tourismo for years, grandma tourismo sounds awesome. Definitely get strangerville it’s a great add on, comes with the military career which is the highest paying career in the game.

Now I’m off to play some more hours of Witcher 3 😁

Diva66 · 12/08/2020 17:38

Your DH is a knob. Invite all his mates to an online war game.

HOkieCOkie · 12/08/2020 17:42

I love the sims and my new obsession is animal crossing tho. Ignore him, life is too short. Have fun.

Margerine78 · 12/08/2020 17:43

OP, your husband sounds mean! He should love you and respect your interests. Being into games is fun, and good mental stimulation, it's not nerdy!

I had a boyfriend once who said I was "childish" as I bought a framed poster of Ian Curis (of Joy Division). He thought me being into music as a grown woman was embarrassing. At that time he was trying to be a filmmaker (and failing) and had just told me about a film he made about zombie snowboarders ...self-awareness is a wonderful thing....

Scotland32 · 12/08/2020 17:49

He didn’t put it very nicely but I think he has a point. Aside from anything nerdy, I can’t help wondering....Do you not have anything better to do with your time? What a waste. You only get one life, make it count!

SillyLoveSong · 12/08/2020 17:51

Your husband is horrible.

I've played The Sims since the first one came out and have spent a fair bit of money on the expansion packs. My daughter now plays it as well. My DP has never had a problem with it as he is a big fan of the Resident Evil and Final Fantasy franchises. Playing games is no more a waste of time as watching tv or listening to music or any number of hobbies people have.

glowfrog · 12/08/2020 17:51

@Hindsite gosh, I really hope your DH is otherwise good to you because what he said makes him out to be a total dick and someone to be actually embarrassed of.

ScribblerWitch · 12/08/2020 17:53

Your husband is behaving like a dick. There’s nothing wrong with being a nerd! You sound lovely!

For what it’s worth, my obsession (and I mean OBSESSION) is Arthur Morgan from RDR2. I love him and I don’t care who knows it. I have an Instagram page devoted to him and I post every single day. I’m even writing a very long fan fiction about him. I’m a 41 year old woman. Luckily, my DH excepts and supports my nerdish ways, though that may be because he’s a nerd himself 😄

If people don’t like it or think it’s a waste of time, they can naff off!

Oh, and I also love Sims 4!

glowfrog · 12/08/2020 17:53

@Rtruth OMG listen to yourself 🤣🤣🤣 who are you to decide what is a worthwhile way to spend your life? Why is interior design better than creating designs in a video game??

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 12/08/2020 17:56

You sound most excellent, your partner is being a twat

Quaagars · 12/08/2020 17:58

Think of the hours you could have been doing something meaningful

I don't even play video games, but even I think this worthy of a Hmm and a Biscuit

lakesidesummer · 12/08/2020 18:02

Think of the hours you could have been doing something meaningful. Charity work, keeping fit, a interior design course for example

Slightly perplexed as to why an interior design course is more meaningful ?

Anyway don't stress I manage to fit in volunteering, fitness classes and having a five star animal crossing island.

It is very judgmental to try an rank leisure time activity in order of worthiness but the puritans would have been proud.

ToftyAC · 12/08/2020 18:04

That’s your hobby - what’s wrong with that? Your oh is being an arse for making you feel bad. My oh has tried the same with my hobbies.... I told him to fuck the fuck off.

CatRamsey · 12/08/2020 18:10

I haven't RTFT but just sharing the sims love. Is it sims 4 you play? I never got into 4 but spend most of my day on Sims 3, I put a lot of time and effort into it and I have made my own Instagram based around it, althought it didn't kick off but I still follow others. Okay so I'm only in my twenties but this hasn't changed since I was about 14 maybe so I really don't think I'll be any different when I'm middle aged! GrinGrin

P.S LTB Wink

MdNdD · 12/08/2020 18:18

Your husband’s the embarrassment, not you.
I once went to a strip club with a big group of friends and ran into someone from work. I was mortified until everyone, including the work colleague, pointed out that I was clearly there for a laugh, he was the one in the strip club popping notes in nickers and was the one to be embarrassed. Point is - your husband’s friend / colleague is also playing these games, is he also calling him a giant nerd?? Sounds like bullying and emotional abuse to me.

PicsInRed · 12/08/2020 18:21

OP, am I right in saying that you are making a town in the game, and then other players will come and choose to live in your town and renovate those houses? As in, your creation is good enough for other players to want to be part of?

Have I got that right (sorry not a gamer)?

ScribblerWitch · 12/08/2020 18:24

*Dh accepts..stupid typo 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hindsite · 12/08/2020 18:25

Thanks for all the support ☺️

To those who have asked if I have anything better to do with my time ... well, I work part time, I spend a lot of time walking my dogs and engaging in dog training, I do karate and I write (currently writing a novel). You know one thing I don’t do? I don’t watch TV ... maybe that’s where my spare time comes from because I’m betting those people that think I’m wasting time do watch TV. How is it any different?

Hindsite · 12/08/2020 18:31

@ScribblerWitch you have to share your Arthur Morgan IG!! 😂 I have such a crush on him, he’s like the perfect man. The cutscene in RDR2 where he’s stood on the railway tracks with his cowboy hat on, bandana and gun in hand waiting for the train ... oh my god ❤️ I always did like the bad guys 😂

Ifeelsuchafool · 12/08/2020 18:34

You need to start a YluTube channel and play Sims on that. My DD2 (age 25!) is into Sims and watching people play Sims on their YouTube channels and some of them have tens of thousands of followers, and seem to be getting a tidy sum from their advertising.
He'll laugh on the other side of his face when you whizz off on a holiday paid for with the profits of your nerdiness(leaving him behind if course!) 😂

Lisa82sim · 12/08/2020 18:36

I'm a 39 year old woman with a 5 year old kid and absolutely love playing Minecraft and games where you build your own theme park or hospital. I work, I help my kid with his school work, I cook and clean and do all the usual stuff but my free time, I enjoy nothing more than building like you. I recently got into lego... And playmobil. Not sure if I buy if for my kid anymore or me as I love building it all. Your husband is an idiot.... What does he do, just sit around and watch TV all night? Each to their own... Do what you enjoy and forget what he says.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 12/08/2020 18:37

The gaming industry makes more money than the film and music industries put together. Therefore I think it's more popular than a lot of people realise. You carry on, you're not hurting anyone, and tell your husband to butt out!
