To think that most F1 racers seem to have won the genetic lottery?

Absolutely irrelevant topic but this has always been on my mind for no reason at all. I watch a lot of F1 races due to my family being very much into it and for some reason they all generally seem to be what you could consider 'good looking'.

I am sure there is no actual correlation between physical appearance and success as a F1 racer but it's something I noticed ages ago

Am I the only one that thinks so? I hope not 😂

Max .ooks too much like the petulant kid he was a few years back. He seems to have blossomed little since being the definite number 1 at Red Bull though, and his radio comments to his engineer to make sure he stayed hydrated were golden.

I thought I'd share this video since so many of us love Danny Ric and Hulk, apologies if you've already seen it. Nico's laugh at the start just has me smiling every time.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/08/2020 22:52

That should say looks and a little. The keyboard on this tablet is too small for my fat fingers.

Becuna · 13/08/2020 04:46

Jenson was great in changing weather conditions because when he was karting his dad, John, couldn’t afford to buy wets so Jens just had to deal with the changing conditions. Jenson is one of my heroes.

CaptainCallisto · 13/08/2020 15:38

DRS that video is great - they look like they had so much fun! Nico's laugh Grin

Stroll reminds me for the world of Jacob from Twilight. I didn't rate him tbh but he's proved himself a few times. Now Latifi, good lord how did he get into F1 in the first place and how on earth has he got a contract for 2021? There are half a dozen drivers in F2 I'd offer a place to before giving Latifi another season. Terrible.

As for wealth, seem to recall Ocon's parents sold everything they owned for him, Vettels Dad was a carpenter, unsure but I think Danny Ric was from reasonably humble beginnings and Jensens parents, although owning a car dealership, were certainly not in the superrich category.

Interesting though when you look at the stats for racing drivers who are the children of racing drivers, most do not achieve the success of their parents. Max is a bit of an exception here, outshining Jos completely.

RE: children of racing drivers. Yes. Damon Hill won more than his Graham, but Graham got more world championships. It'll be interesting to see how it goes with Mick Schumacher.
Irre247 · 13/08/2020 22:26

I feel a bit sorry for Stroll, he clearly has had a lot of opportunities because of his family wealth, but if he does badly it’s cause “he’s crap and dad bought him a team” and if he does well it’s “well he only got there cause
his dad bought him a team” - he can’t win!

I’m not sure Mick Schumacher will make it to F1, or if he does I don’t think it will last very long. Word on the street is that David (son of Ralf) is a much stronger driver, but who knows.

I also think that whilst DR is very easy on the eye, he’s overrated and petulant. I’m very interested to see how things go at Mclaren, especially if Lando beats him! It did not go well when Max outdrove him week on week.

Rubens Barichello tells a similar story To JB of going to Interlagos in the rain and driving on slicks until he got good in the wet!

NCGardener · 13/08/2020 23:06

I'd say there are far more unattractive f1 drivers than there are attractive ones

Allergictoironing · 14/08/2020 10:16

I can't agree with the pp fancying Vettel - I find his mouth too sort of sloppy looking. But JB - phwoar!

If you want a good looking bunch of sportsmen, the current England cricket Test team HAS to be up there Wink.

... was just going to see who was watching Q3 .... then Magnusson wipes Ocon out ... and we are red flagged

jellyjellybaby · 15/08/2020 12:04

I am watching Q3. I'm not even ashamed to say I woke up at 5 am to watch it and oh god just seen that. I really don't know what magnussen was thinking. I reckon probably half of them don't check their mirrors (Ricciardo reversing in Baku last year) but why in the world would you just break in the middle of the circuit???

I remember seeing Jenson Button at an event at Brands Hatch. We watched him getting out of the helicopter (so glamorous!). He then went on stage for about 90mins when he answered every question, no matter how inane, with the same enthusiasm. He
was funny, intelligent and of course very good looking.
By the end he certainly had all the women swooning & I think most of the men (who had been muttering about him being a prat) respected him.
Button knew he was there for crowd entertainment so we saw him, not an ego!

That was in FP3 wasn't it? Magnussen didn't make it out of Q1 and Ocon out of Q2?
jellyjellybaby · 15/08/2020 21:29

DanielRicciardoSmile Yea sorry FP3, I was too sleep deprived to actually function and realise that haha I felt quite bad for Ocon but not as bad as I do for Ricciardo and how the commentator (idk if this is the right word) butchers his name every single time. I actually ended up muting it!

I used to be a big fan of Villeneuve as a kid and then Button. At one stage I did say and ideal night would be sharing a hot tub with the F1 drivers, but I am now in my late 30's and definitely to old for most of the current drivers! Sainz, Hulkenberg (as although no longer F1) and Bottas are pretty hot. I like Daniel Riccardo and Vettel as they just seem like nice guys. Alvina d Norris will probably be quite handsome in ten years, but they are way too young. I'm finding the fact that a lot of the drivers are so young is reminding me of my age!

Most of them have money, or the wouldn't be there. It is one of those sports where money is needed to get you through the door (I guess darts is the only option for my boys!).

With money comes better health, confidence and usually one very attractive parent, and one or both that's probably quite smart too, so I guess that genes are involved.

I was thinking I'd missed something in all the excitement of Kimi finally making it out of Q1!
VIVS63 · 15/08/2020 21:46

Lewis is very easy on the eye, and a good soul too. For the former no doubt money helps with grooming and being able to afford the best. For the latter, I can only guess he had a good upbringing.

Mrhodgeymaheg · 15/08/2020 22:39

Ugh autocorrect was a bugger in my last message!

VIVS63 I agree about Hamilton. I don't think he's dull and he does seem genuine, despite enjoying a good party and his fame. I think he is a good role model for working class kids wanting to get into the sport and he seems very focused to me.

On the other hand I always found Kimi Raiikonen quite grumpy! He doesn't hide his disappointment very well.

jellyjellybaby · 15/08/2020 23:05

I honestly don't get why people give Lewis such a hard time sometimes. I reckon money and fame do change people but he still seems quite genuine. I haven't seen him involved in any sort of scandal (correct me if I'm wrong). He also seems super focused on his career and working his ass off every weekend to be number one which I think is a great example for the younger generations.

Oh Kimi, I actually love how normal he is and how little he cares about the entire F1. It's quite refreshing to see him do interviews.

I have a crate of Huski Chocolate coming Monday. I didn't buy it in the hope of winning a golden ticket trip to the GP. No sir not me 😂

jellyjellybaby · 15/08/2020 23:12

@SoupInTheLaundryBag

I was so close to getting GP tickets for the one in my country which has been rescheduled for 2021. They were on offer and actually incredibly cheap but then I realised I don't have anyone to go with and drool over the drivers along with me 😅

I think adult DS and I are going to testing in 2022. He has a mate that lives near the circuit who will put us up so that's current plan. Paddock passes for testing are reasonably cheap.

Relative can get slightly cheaper GP tickets but the days of freebies are long gone. Sometimes he has to do what the call "handbagging" which means he's given parts and a plane ticket and flies them out last minute to the track. Even that only comes with basic entry!

DH has said he'll take me to a foreign race one day but I need to decide where. Quite a commitment as he really has no interest at all. I think he only enjoys it as he knows if it's a race weekend he can clear off to his garage and play with his old car in peace 😂

Looking forward to my Huski though. I'll put a bottle on the shelf in my woman cave that has a racing seat DH bought for me and F1 flags on the wall. I'm appallingly bad at it and use every assist on the game but it's rather relaxing.

I remember the days when you could get into F1 testing for free. Had a great day at Silverstone in early 80s when we just wandered into the paddock and mingled with the the stars. My boyfriend of the time rather surreally found himself standing at the urinal alongside Jacques Laffite. Got loads of great close up photos of the drivers who were so relaxed.

Hopefully not in the urinal 😂😂

Gahh what do I do this weekend? I might have to watch the Indy 500 to get my racing fix tomorrow!
