To think that most F1 racers seem to have won the genetic lottery?

Absolutely irrelevant topic but this has always been on my mind for no reason at all. I watch a lot of F1 races due to my family being very much into it and for some reason they all generally seem to be what you could consider 'good looking'.

I am sure there is no actual correlation between physical appearance and success as a F1 racer but it's something I noticed ages ago

Am I the only one that thinks so? I hope not 😂

DH has encouraged watching of F1 for many years.
I recently noticed Toto Wolff and I'm not the sort to usually notice anyone.
So I'm watching more happily nowadays.
In general I think they are nice lads though.

compulsivesnacker · 12/08/2020 01:52

@SerenDippitty

I think the same about RAF pilots.
Omg. Noooooooooooo. And they all get fat and paunchy and still think they are gods gift to the laydees. Arseholes. 😂😂
jellyjellybaby · 12/08/2020 02:09

This is such a sweet interview with Hamilton and a kid, genuinely changed some of the feelings I had about him and his personality. You really get to see a different side of people when they talk/interact with children! I even smiled a couple times when watching it, he seemed so nice

Jenson Button - I could not love him more. He has been my F1 crush for year and years and years.
Mark Webber is hot.
Seb too. And I loved Damon Hill back in the day as well.
I properly love F1.......and their hot drivers too.

jerometheturnipking · 12/08/2020 05:22

Op I really liked Drive to Survive, it gave an interesting insight to the behind the scenes politics. I don’t think Christian Horner came off as well as he thought he would, especially with the Danny Ric situation and the Gasly/Albon fiasco.

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2020 06:20

I'll watch drive to survive.

Sounds like my kinda thing!

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/08/2020 07:33

@jellyjellybaby have you seen the one Bottas did with the same kid?

Drive to Survive is really good, have you seen there's a new documentary coming out in September on Sky? About the history of F1, looks worth a watch also.

ExtraOnions · 12/08/2020 07:34

Drive to survive is great, in the first series there was no involvement from Mercedes or Ferrari as a rival piece was being made, but they are involved in the second series.
Lots of Danny Ricciardo which is great, in series one.
I thought Christian Horner came over really badly, then again I don’t like him (May be related to Ginger Spice getting on my nerves)

jellyjellybaby · 12/08/2020 07:59

@DanielRicciardoSmile I have not seen the interview between Bottas and the kid, I'll definitely give it a look. And I wasn't aware of that new documentary, I'm not sure if I'll be able to see it though, as I'm not based in the UK but maybe the internet will help.

@jerometheturnipking Oh god Christian Horner, I really try liking him but just can't yet I hate to admit I actually don't find him so bad looking

Also if anyone is wondering if Drive to Survive is good, it's 2am where I am and I'm hooked. I could watch Ricciardo 24/7

@9PointsOnMyLicence

You do know that most of them are 4 foot 9 and weigh about 6 stone to keep the weigh down in the cars?

Not very hunky in my book.

I'm only 5'3 so I don't mind if they're shorter than the average. And they're all toned and muscly, they've all got phenomenal neck muscles to cope with the G forces in the car, so they're not exactly limp and weedy!
Irre247 · 12/08/2020 08:07

Drive to survive is brilliant for several reasons, mainly Guenther Steiner Grin

The second series is excellent, particularly the episode when Hubert was killed, the narrative with Gasly and how eventually getting the podium in Brazil is really well thought out. The only problem with S2 is how they basically ignored Norris, which is a shame! There’s some good bits with KMag too, and you need to watch right to the end for a brilliant bit with Kimi.

PennyRoyal · 12/08/2020 08:46

Ooh, Drive to Survive - on my watch list now, thankyou!

Was brought up with F1, watching with my Dad. Even though he's gone now, I still watch every race and do the "lights out" countdown with him 💕

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/08/2020 09:14

Guenther Steiner is brilliant, even if I did feel a bit sorry for Grosjean when he wasn't invited to the team dinner because he hadn't earned any points! "Fuck, we look like a bunch of funking wankers" is possibly one of the greatest sentences ever spoken!

Colonelblinkee · 12/08/2020 10:00

I've always thought some of the names to are impossibly romantic, I mean, Rubens Barrichello, Fernando Alonso, Mario Andretti, Jacques Lafitte, even Stirling Moss...

SoupInTheLaundryBag · 12/08/2020 11:07

As I said upthread Christian Horner is a genuinely, lovely bloke. Very calm and measured.
RB were dropped in it a bit with the Netflix visit for Drive To Survive, not sure they expected that level of intrusion. I know Netflix visit to Mercedes coincided with the team not winning that weekend and they blamed Netflix crews and the interruption for that.

In our house Nico Hulkenberg is pronounced exactly the way Danny Ric pronounces it in DTS. Cant help it, cant unheard it.... Huuuulkeenbuuuurrgrrghh 😂

Oh, and my family who works in F1 tell me their first meeting with Danny Ric was with them sat outside the factory eating a bag of crisps in the sun when Danny appeared, nicked a crisp and shot off laughing, popping his head back round the corner only to introduce himself.

And here too. And we had to shout it at the telly every time he appeared on screen the past two weekends!

I suspect, by the end of Sunday DH was thoroughly fed up with DS and I saying it every time he was mentioned. Especially as DH cannot abide F1.

He knows he's lost me from practice on a Friday right through.

Alarae · 12/08/2020 19:48

@DanielRicciardosSmile Nah, I couldn't take Latifi over Stroll. In the looks department Lance takes it (slightly) and of the one segment I paid attention to with him in it, he seemed to have a lighthearted personality so that's a bonus.

But let's face it. If I'm after the money I don't really care too much about their looks/personality. They would be gone most of the year for racing and I would be enjoying 5* lunches all around the world.. Grin

mrsBtheparker · 12/08/2020 20:35

They’re almost all wealthy or from wealthy families. I think the two are linked. Lack of hardship, permatan and are fit and healthy.

Don't think that Hamilton fits this profile at all.

Stroll is the best though, such a bad driver that Daddy bought him a team to drive for!

SoupInTheLaundryBag · 12/08/2020 21:15

Stroll reminds me for the world of Jacob from Twilight. I didn't rate him tbh but he's proved himself a few times.
Now Latifi, good lord how did he get into F1 in the first place and how on earth has he got a contract for 2021? There are half a dozen drivers in F2 I'd offer a place to before giving Latifi another season. Terrible.

As for wealth, seem to recall Ocon's parents sold everything they owned for him, Vettels Dad was a carpenter, unsure but I think Danny Ric was from reasonably humble beginnings and Jensens parents, although owning a car dealership, were certainly not in the superrich category.

Interesting though when you look at the stats for racing drivers who are the children of racing drivers, most do not achieve the success of their parents. Max is a bit of an exception here, outshining Jos completely.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/08/2020 21:42

Because his Dad's a billionaire and happy to throw money at his son's career, and Williams are desperate for the money. Especially since Lawrence Stroll took his cash away and bought Force India.

MsJinks · 12/08/2020 22:21

Ah reading this after my first trip to Silverstone in 40 years went down the pan - I kind of forgot I like F1 once I got kids and a boring hubby (ex!) for far too long - I find all the drivers seem nice, often funny guys, with none of the horrible stuff you get around say footballers which is a bonus - I don’t know them personally so could be very wrong! Ricardo’s smile is the best - boo to the mask for this reason alone! Seb is not bad looking, and same name as my grandson, which also means I really must not perv on him. Is it ok to do so on jenson then 🤔 Max is a favourite driver of mine but always thought he was a bit unfortunate looking, though he may improve with age. Lance is very unfortunate in my eyes - though not with his parentage! Interesting to read others’ opinions. Maybe they’re sexy as they drive fast cars very, very fast - like a ‘really man 🤷🏼‍♀️

MsJinks · 12/08/2020 22:23

‘Real’

nasiisthebest · 12/08/2020 22:26

Max Verstappen seems like a genuine and fun guy but lets be honest, he looks like a ferret.
