To think that most F1 racers seem to have won the genetic lottery?

Absolutely irrelevant topic but this has always been on my mind for no reason at all. I watch a lot of F1 races due to my family being very much into it and for some reason they all generally seem to be what you could consider 'good looking'.

I am sure there is no actual correlation between physical appearance and success as a F1 racer but it's something I noticed ages ago

Am I the only one that thinks so? I hope not 😂

@ConstanceSalinger

Lewis was hand picked at 6/7 by McLaren as the "black racer of the future". Not sure they lined him up against other 6 year olds to decide on looks.

He was rubbish at racing then though, good job he got better! Money definitely helps with looks!

I think it's pretty off to insinuate he was picked as a black racer. A friend's son was racing Lewis Hamilton in his young karting days and I recall her telling me how good Lewis was and how no-one could get near him most of the time. His karting record would tend to prove that. Maybe he was picked up for his talent rather than for his colour?

Kimi Raikkonnen for me although I have a soft spot for DC and Mark Webber as well. They’ve all got even more handsome as they’ve aged!

user1471523870 · 11/08/2020 10:42

But the OP was saying racers, so Toto is not to be taken into consideration he he.
I agree at the moment there are quite a lot of good looking ones, but perhaps it's just luck...it's hasn't always been like that...
I don't think money plays a huge role as I doubt they go for facials or other more extreme beauty treatments!

By the way, Nico Rosberg is my fav one ever!

SoupInTheLaundryBag · 11/08/2020 11:05

I have pics in my dining room of DD at last years RB Christmas party with both Max and Alex. She tells me Alex was really quite shy and when Max came over for a pic kind of stood back as if he thought she'd not want him in it. Very sweet, very humble lad. DD sees him occasionally out running when she's walking the dog. He'll nod and smile.
I have a little shelf with all the memorabilia I've gathered over the years, my prize being a signed pic of Max and Danny Ric Grin

Jaques was my favourite back in the day. He still pops up from time to time doing commentary. Not sure how anyone can say Michael wasn't handsome, he really was, as was Ralf I thought. Mick Schumacher Jr races F2 and is equally rather handsome. He's also inherited his fathers style taking his team mate out last weekend bless him 😂

itsgettingweird · 11/08/2020 11:58

Danny Ric is just so lovely!

He just seems so normal and naturally quite funny. No airs and graces etc. I often worry about some in sports who appear to be nothing more than their sport iyswim?

It's great to be top and there won't be another Lewis for years as there was a huge gap between him and Schumacher.
But what more is he than the sport?
I'd like to think Lewis could do so much more the diversity of the sport. But I don't even feel he's approaching that right. He just lacks 'something' in personality that hinders his delivery.

Other drivers attract you to the sport because they have personalities beyond the car and make you want to listen to them and watch them and make you want to will them to do well.

HaudMaDug · 11/08/2020 15:11

How could I forget the beautiful and utterly down to earth, Jim Clark. (from my neck of the woods)

AryaStarkWolf · 11/08/2020 15:14

Really? I think most of them are pretty unattractive

happyjules · 11/08/2020 15:19

I have found my kind of people. Jenson in my view is just the most gorgeous man on the planet, the twinkle in his eyes and the Perma half smile just does it for me. Then of course we have the jaw line of DC, the lovely Danny Ric, Valterri Bottas, Lando is extremely attractive and will be the complete package, George Russell and I certainty wouldn't kick the Hulk out of bed either . Most of that's are way too young for my thoughts to be decent but a girl can dream. I dearly hope that Billy Longer gets the opportunities he deserves, as he is an absolute inspiration. Oh and Toto, I know he's not a driver but omg!

F1fan123 · 11/08/2020 15:38

Had to name change for this one!

My daughter interviewed LH twice a few years ago. He is lovely in person. Seeing how "arrogant" he looks on his social media sometimes doesn't add up to the person we met. It's bizarre

And that's what I'm trying to say and why I think bothers me so much.

He's one of the best F1 drivers we've ever had and he's from a normal background and BAME background. He could do so much for a lot of areas.

But his media and F1 persona is so robotic and so focussed and monotone when talking about races I think we a lose a lot of what he is or could be and it makes it harder for him to inspire those he wants to inspire.

He's saved millions by registering his assets off shore. I'd love to see him do something human and sponsor a young kid to follow in his footsteps. I think that would do sos much more for the sport than the quibbling over the knee which is a personal choice thing universally and I don't think people should be shamed into physically doing something to make a point.

MsWoodentop · 11/08/2020 16:02

Maybe Lewis does lots for charity but doesn't publicise it? And he has his own charitable foundation.

TokyoSushi · 11/08/2020 16:04

I like Lewis. I think when you're so good, and so wealthy, you're always going to be a bit removed from reality, but I like him!

I think maybe he should publicise things. He's so inspirational in what he's achieved.

I just think he would draw more people in in what he wants to achieve if he was more personable.

I'd much rather see anybody in the public eye promote what they are personally doing than moan about what they think others should be doing.

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 11/08/2020 16:10

I didn’t see him moan about some drivers not taking the knee. He said it was individual choice.

amusedbush · 11/08/2020 16:13

Can't say I know of too many F1 drivers but Jenson Button - phwoarrr!

7Days · 11/08/2020 16:16

I'd recommend the documentary Crash and Byrne on Amazon I think.
Focuses on an Irish lad from the wrong side of the tracks coming up around the same time as Ayrton Senna, a billionaires son. Comparable talents but that's the only comparison.

Eye opening in that respect. Different worlds entirely.

Gurtcha · 11/08/2020 16:26

I don’t know if anybody’s said it but...

Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell??

noimkaren · 11/08/2020 16:48

They're all very short...

Notnownotneverever · 11/08/2020 16:50

F1 fan here but no wouldn’t agree. There are some handsome drivers but they aren’t all that good looking. I would say the good looking ones do get the interviews and air time though and tend to be more confident and outgoing and contributing to more air time.

msflibble · 11/08/2020 16:54

I've noticed this. They're always hot AF.
Genetically though, they do seem to be missing the sensible/self-preservation gene. A lot of F1 drivers have come to sticky ends, or have had nasty accidents that permanently disfigured them

DanielRicciardosSmile · 11/08/2020 17:45

@HeeeeyDuggee I have to confess to a soft spot for Seb, and he genuinely seems one of the nicest drivers on the grid - especially with kids (probably since he's got 3 of his own). My heart is breaking for him this season, Ferrari have destroyed him and it's devastating to watch.

Oh me too! It’s so sad he deserves so much better than this. I keep hoping another team will pick him up he’s got too much left in him to just be dropped from the sport.

Alarae · 11/08/2020 18:03

F1? Mumsnet? Never thought I would see the two meet!

Subject matter at hand, the majority of drivers to me are not attractive. Definitely don't see it for Leclerc or Lando, they look like scrawny little boys to me.

Nico Hulkenburg though... His hair is just dreamy.

Danny Ric for his adorable personality and smile.

George Russell is probably best of the rest for the 2020 lineup along with Lewis (when he stops the lame broody model eyes look).

For past drivers, definitely a bit of Jenson Button.

If I'm being shallow, then I'll follow the uber money and go for Stroll as he isn't horrendous looking, but daddy is a billionaire so...

IndieTara · 11/08/2020 18:04

JB is gorgeous and I've loved Damon since the early 90's. Both tall too which helps.
I have a life size Max Verstappen who watches the race with me.

Helmetbymidnight · 11/08/2020 18:09

goodness Toto woolff!

wow.

does chris hemswoth playing james hunt count? now that was a good film!
