To tell my friend I can't give her a lift?

I'm going out for a meal with my friend tomorrow.
It's about a 25 min drive away.
My friend doesn't drive.
I have to drive past her house but with this covid situation,it's probably not a good idea to give her a lift.
Aibu to tell her I can't give her a lift ?
And that she will need to get the bus or taxi

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/08/2020 19:29

I think there would be more risk to you if she took the bus then sat by you in a restaurant all eve?

Open your car windows and wear a mask if worried.

Theres more risk in her getting a bus or a taxi than you giving her a lift

errr....proof? Stats? Science?

Lol don't need proof just common sense. If you're spending time with the friend anyway and u have the virus they've already caught it from you at the meal. What would be the point of risking exposing to someone else who may or may not have the virus if they've already been exposed to you. Seriously, it's common sense. I think this has gone out the window in covid times

The problem is this is scientifically incorrect, so your 'common sense' is wrong.

PopcornPeacock · 09/08/2020 19:34

Either tell her to hang her head out of the car window during the journey, or tie her to the roof rack firmly !

AlwaysCheddar · 09/08/2020 19:36

Seriously????!!!!! You can eat a meal opposite her but not sit next to her.... wtf!

MumsyMumIAmNot · 09/08/2020 19:40

YABU WTF 😂😂😂😂

ekidmxcl · 09/08/2020 19:40

Wind the windows down and have her sit in the back seat furthest from you.

Pobblebonk · 09/08/2020 19:43

m not saying they are, I'm saying the air in the room is a factor. Especially the. viral load presumably.

You said all that matters was table size. I disagree.

Well, no, I didn't, I referred specifically to factors such as the ability to have windows open and masks on in a car, and the fact that in a restaurant people aren't wearing masks.

copperoliver · 09/08/2020 19:44

If you are going out for a meal with her you can give her a lift.

Just ask her to sit in the back and wear a mask. X

IndiaMay · 09/08/2020 19:45

I dont know why you wouldn't. You can get a taxi, you can have a driving lesson

iwishiwasonhol · 09/08/2020 19:46

as someone who doesn't drive i am very grateful to my work friend who drops me off after finishing work at 10.30pm rather than walking 45 mins home or having to wait till 11.15pm and hoping that it turns up (buses used to be every half hour rather than hourly) ,i sit in the back mask on and windows open sanatise hand before i get in

timetest · 09/08/2020 19:47

Give her a lift and wear masks. I couldn’t imagine not giving a friend a lift in this situation.

Looneytune253 · 09/08/2020 19:47

@labyrinthloafer can u explain how please? I just think it makes so much more sense to expose yourself to less people ?

Durgasarrow · 09/08/2020 19:49

I could understand you not giving her a lift as a matter of general principle. But not giving her a lift when you're driving right by her place and you're eating together? No, I don't get that.

HOkieCOkie · 09/08/2020 19:50

If you both wear masks and she sits in the back it’ll be fine.

This is the bit of your statement I think incorrect: If you're spending time with the friend anyway and u have the virus they've already caught it from you at the meal.

If you follow distancing rules, and especially if for example there was someone between you and your friend sitting along the same side of the dinner table, it is entirely possible you wouldn't transmit it between you.

It is possible to spread it in the car because you can't distance.

So you increase the risk of spread by sharing the car too.

The car is not the same 'risk episode' it is a separate event. And cars are confined spaces.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 09/08/2020 20:01

Ask her to wear a mask....

Rhubardandcustard · 09/08/2020 20:11

Sounds a bit mean if you are passing by her door. Get her to wear a mask and sit in back with window open if you’re that worried.

llarreggub · 09/08/2020 20:13

Both wear masks, have your friend sit in the rear seats.

Looneytune253 · 09/08/2020 20:14

Yes but it's just OP and her friend so they'll be prob closer than 2m for the meal and the chatting face to face etc. I think since you're already exposed to one person it makes so much more sense to travel with them. The bus could have several people you would potentially have contact with and a taxi driver may have had contact with many ppl. I still think risks are much lower

fairlyplump · 09/08/2020 20:21

oh you divvi

Not for op if they don't want to catch covid! I explained up thread why the bus is safer for both imo.

It's a separate event from the meal. If the op distanced at the meal they may very well not transmit.

The government told people to use common sense to avoid being blamed when it went wrong.

People don't actually have common sense. There's fact, and opinion, and choice.

Lucky2Be · 09/08/2020 20:40

Driving lessons have resumed - so why not give your friend a lift!

user1487194234 · 09/08/2020 20:52

I think it's absolutely fine to give people a lift and think it is nonsense not to but ai suppose it is your call

edwardcullensotherwoman · 09/08/2020 21:05

There's more chance of her picking up the virus from a bus or taxi and giving it to you while you're socialising to be honest. Just wear masks, if it bothers you a great deal ask her to sit in the back on the passenger side. How far apart will you be at the restaurant thought? Most tables aren't 2m wide!

Well not on this single occasion, as she'd have to incubate the virus for a new mber of days before becoming infectious, and anyway if you distance you will likely avoid catching it from anyone.

Sorry if you didn't mean immediately but there are so many misconceptions on this thread.
