To tell my friend I can't give her a lift?

I'm going out for a meal with my friend tomorrow.
It's about a 25 min drive away.
My friend doesn't drive.
I have to drive past her house but with this covid situation,it's probably not a good idea to give her a lift.
Aibu to tell her I can't give her a lift ?
And that she will need to get the bus or taxi

It's tomorrow ! So surely your friend has assumed you'll be picking her up as you go past her house otherwise wouldn't she have said that she'll see you at the meeting place ? Pick her up !

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 09/08/2020 17:05

But you’ll go to a busy restaurant where lots of people will be touching hot spots etc...

Viviennemary · 09/08/2020 17:06

That would be silly. Both wear masks.

Rainbowshine · 09/08/2020 17:07

You’re allowed to have driving lessons now, just wear a face mask and have some antibacterial wipes for the door handle if you’re that bothered.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2020 17:07

Yabvvvu

nannybeach · 09/08/2020 17:08

Technically, not allowed, unless unavoidable, says the rules, both wear masks, she sits in the oposite corner, windows open

SockYarn · 09/08/2020 17:09

Just give her a lift. Make her wear a mask, open the window. Risk really is very, very tiny.

SockYarn · 09/08/2020 17:11

Oh and I missed that you're having dinner with her - that's even more bonkers. Happy to sit in a restaurant with her, but not happy to give her a lift to that restaurant.

Jeezo.

mbosnz · 09/08/2020 17:11

What say, you both wear masks in the car, she sanitises her hands before she gets in the car, and she sits in the back of the car?

labyrinthloafer · 09/08/2020 17:12

@ShalomToYouJackie

What's the difference between sitting opposite each other in a restaurant and next to each other in a car?
Argh. This is what makes it so worrying with people not understanding, there's a huge difference!

How big is a car? How many people?

How big is a restaurant? How many people?

A taxi has a screen for a reason.

The advice is not to car share with other households.

If you decide to, they must mask, in the back on non-driver side, windows open.

YANBU to be concerned, I would not share a car for a non-essential journey personally.

Soubriquet · 09/08/2020 17:15

I swear more and more people are losing their common sense

You will go out and have a meal with her but won’t give her a lift...even though you are driving right by her house?

Jesus Christ Hmm

SockYarn · 09/08/2020 17:15

Shoot me now then, I just gave DD and two of her friends a lift back from the station rather than make them all walk 2 miles in the heat. None of us wore masks.

howfarwevecome · 09/08/2020 17:20

You're kidding, right?

Because no sane person would agree to meet a friend for a meal in a restaurant during a pandemic where they will be sharing a table but be reluctant to carpool to the restaurant.

SockYarn · 09/08/2020 17:20

How big is a car? How many people? How big is a restaurant? How many people?

Well in this case it's two people, who can sit one behind the other, potentially wearing masks with the windows open for air, for a 20 minute journey. How can anyone perceive that as MORE risky than sitting around a table with however many people for a couple of hours having a meal?

No one is going to shoot you (that breaches all sorts of other guidelines anyway Grin), and it is clear people are ignoring the guidelines widely.

What worries me as a person keen to see low levels of covid infection is people are frequently saying 'if you're doing X, you may as well do y'.

But doing x + y is more risky than only doing x or y.

Individually a small risk increase is small.

Collectively it all adds up - and cases rise.

If we want covid levels to decrease, we really need everyone to minimise their risk of transmission whenever we can. I accept this may not be something England is willing to do.

Greenpolkadot · 09/08/2020 17:24

I agree with everyone else. Mask up and get her to in the back. Wrap her up in cling film if you must. It seems hypocritical that you'd sit yapping over a meal but you won't give the poor lass a lift. FFS

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 17:25

Give her a lift.

Wear masks.

Clymene · 09/08/2020 17:25

Two people sitting opposite one another across a restaurant table are much more likely to transmit Covid than two people sitting in a car wearing masks with the windows open, especially if the passenger sits in the back.

Anyone who thinks there's any logic to government rules beyond economic impetus is misguided imo

Compare where the walls and ceiling are in a restaurant and car.

Windows open is important yes. A sealed car is a seriously bad idea.
BaronessBomburst · 09/08/2020 17:29

An indoors restaurant is a seriously bad idea if it's not adequately ventilated.

mosquitofeast · 09/08/2020 17:30

@BananaPop2020

For crying out loud, give her a lift. I can’t take much more of this Covid related BS.
Well, this ignorant and selfish attitude is the right way to guarantee we get YEARS more of "this Covid related BS".

You don't feel like taking it any more. So you are going to mess it up for the whole population, and force us to have to live with it for longer.

Why do you think the virus cares the you "can't take mush more of this"?

Do you think its going to be saying to itself "O dear, I've been upsetting @BananaPop2020, better leave them and their friends and family alone from now on , they "can't take much more"

It's rude to all of the people and family members of those who have died to call covid BS. Have some respect.
giggly · 09/08/2020 17:31

Fuck sake give her a lift, just don’t snog herWink

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 09/08/2020 17:31

Both wear masks. She sits in the back on passenger side, windows open.
