To ask what things you consider to be of “good taste”

Well... I was going to say “classy” but I don’t think that’s a particularly classy word!

Following on from the “tacky/common” thread. What sort of things would you say are “good taste” “middle class” etc

I’ll start... appletiser

Radio 4, vintage cars, subtle hair and make-up, attending book readings and museum exhibitions, organic and local food.

All of which I enjoy. But I also drive a white Range Rover and get Botox, so I’m sure I’ll be plonked squarely in the tacky category 😁

FlibbertyGiblets · 04/08/2020 22:51

I could say home made cakes, but that can point out time-poor-ness. A lot of what will be posted will be budget related. Appletiser is yummy but here you can't get at local Tesco. A trip to another town to a Waitrose would be needed. Again, time-poor. Transport needed, too.

So in my usual rambly way I am saying be careful, potential here to upset people.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 22:55

You can’t get appletiser at the local Tesco??? I’d complain!

I wish MN would start a separate topic for people who want to bang on about class. Why do you care, OP? Genuine question. And yes, I know I opened the thread. I wanted to see what the latest thread about class-based judgement was.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 04/08/2020 22:55

Why don't you ask
Hyacinth Bucket ( sorry, Bouquet) she has all the answers

Ellisandra · 04/08/2020 22:56

@FlibbertyGiblets 👍🏻

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 22:57

Because I’m fascinated by social class! And what makes the difference between the classes: how we group ourselves into tribes. It absolutely fascinates me!

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 22:58

And it’s not about money! Appletiser costs very little. A Range Rover is well out of my price league!

Never talking about money or politics.

Holidays in Cornwall in August.

Ellisandra · 04/08/2020 22:59

Thank you for answering, as it was a genuine question. I think an actual conversation about tribes is interesting - but yet another pointless list just isn’t. That just doesn’t tell you why people do it.

VictoriousSockPuppet · 04/08/2020 23:00

If you need to ask, you're not!

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 23:00

The pointless list gets the chat going though!

Manners, and all the other good things money can't buy

I've found working class people have the best manners. A smile, a cup of tea, a seat

Othering · 04/08/2020 23:02

Appetiser?????

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 23:02

On mumsnet, you get visibility of people very unlike yourself: in normal day to day life, I wouldn’t get the opportunity to hear the inner thoughts of an MC woman in London... in an anonymous forum, it’s great to hear others viewpoints.

Bettyboop82 · 04/08/2020 23:02

Being discreet, polite and courteous I think are the true markers of being ‘classy’.

Othering · 04/08/2020 23:02

Whoops, Appletiser even.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 23:03

Yip. Appletiser. The height of sophistication

OP posts:
JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 04/08/2020 23:04

Why Appletiser? Confused is it not just a soft drink? Why would it be evidence of good taste?

I would think water would be better.....

Dylaninthemovies1 · 04/08/2020 23:05

It’s just a thing of beauty!

Londonmummy66 · 04/08/2020 23:05

Peonies and good manners - ie making people feel comfortable rather than awkward regardless of the situation

Finkelbraun · 04/08/2020 23:07

Anything by Oka. Whoever said you can't buy good taste had clearly never shopped at Oka.

You do need to be minted though Sad

RedNun · 04/08/2020 23:07

I wouldn’t say ‘middle-class’ and ‘good taste’ are the same thing at all. To put it mildly.

FlibbertyGiblets · 04/08/2020 23:10

Why appletiser? Because those awful C2/D/E types give their kids cola, ewwww [sarcasm] and appletiser is aspirational, doncha know.

Atalune · 04/08/2020 23:10

Cloth napkins
Green wellies
