AIBU?

To ask what things you consider to be of “good taste”

Well... I was going to say “classy” but I don’t think that’s a particularly classy word!

Following on from the “tacky/common” thread. What sort of things would you say are “good taste” “middle class” etc

I’ll start... appletiser

Maybe , also ( I’ll run and hide...) a lack of tattoos?

Coconut water is vile but apparently it’s full of nutrients and electrolytes.

Basically the rule for something being classy is: if most people do it or have it, it isn’t classy. And if it’s visibly expensive it isn’t classy.

No they weren’t @Flaxmeadow!!

They were artisans and kept chickens (em, I’ve actually no idea what they did. One grandad was a postie and the other one shagged about a lot)

But, nothing will stop me drinking appletiser. In my fanciest glass

@NameChange84. I think you’ve probably captured it all. Understated elegance. And (apart from the jewellery), it doesn’t have to be expensive (but money helps)

Florida?

Or Orlando/Disney?

Because a lot of the people I know who are very wealthy have second homes in Sarasota/St Augustine/Marco Island/Naples/The Keys etc.

Not a bad attempt for a miner’s granddaughter eh?

@EleanorOalike I suppose I was thinking more as a holiday destination rather than a second home. Now you mention it though, I also know several very wealthy people with second homes in Florida but the “posh” people I know are far more likely to have a ski lodge or a place in the south of France.

Insisting your kids only drink water or milk.
I’m common because we have diluting juice Blush

Oh and Dubai is another marker - so far from classy! All the Noovs go to Dubai in October half term.

Coconut water is delicious, if it was affordable it's all I'd drink.

Appletiser and Ikea beds... 😄
Some people are confusing things they happen to like with things that signify good taste. Those things are fine, but hardly tasteful.

Clean, well kept hands and nails. I don't mean acrylics/gels or even polished at all. Just neatly filed and buffed. Simple clothes that suit and fit the wearer properly. They don't have to be expensive, just clean, ironed and not see-through or thin enough to reveal lumps & bumps. Also, a genuine River Island handbag is probably much more tasteful than a fake Michael Kors bag.

@300XLTriColour
I recognise your list - and I think Appletise would fit in very nicely! Classic FM is brilliant; I'd have thrown in BCA books but I'm struggling to think of the modern equivalent.

Appletiser is made from concentrate. (I'm sorry, it had to be said).

I find it fascinating that people think a certain car or drink or holiday destination makes them 'better'. I like the idea that we are all different rather than 'better'. There was a thread on here a while asking why are typically middle class things assumed to be better or correct and working class things wrong? It was really interesting.
That said, we are only human I have to admit I think my taste in music/films/food is the bestGrin

@Thisismytimetoshine. Appletiser is very tasteful

You probably mean tasty...

I guess it's how you regard these things lol.

Appletiser: 'Apple spritz'
White Range Rover: 'Donkey'
Elderflower presse: 'Pressed elderflower'
Vimto: 'Cordial'
Yacht: 'boat'
Second home in Italy: 'we tend to summer in Italy'

All understated and down played.

@300XLTriColour

Not my list ... wonder if anyone recognises where this is from:

Brown bread
Radio 4
Classic fm
Anything made by an Artisan
Golf
Wimbledon
Jazz
The Tate
Sailing
Fountain Pens
Skiing
Cheese
Seafood
Wine you can’t buy in a supermarket
Coffee beans
Manuka honey
Kent

Pauline suggested this list, didn’t she?
Report
CherryPavlova · 04/08/2020 23:59

I can’t see why Kent is there but then Apple pop would not be to my taste either.

@Dylaninthemovies1 😂 I may be biased. It is my vile sister’s favourite drink.

@CherryPavlova it is indeed Pauline’s list. Don’t forget she doesn’t work in a supermarket, she works in Waitrose. And when she goes to the theatre she has to pretend to enjoy it. I think Pauline would like Appletise.
