According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

We live in the south west but we’re about five hours from Cornwall. It’s a huge area. Surely they’ll lockdown parts of it rather than the entire south west

Look what happened in the NW and W Yorks. I live in a West Yorks village, hills and farms all around, but not touristy. Lots of social distancing and masks. Less than a mile to 2 different local authority areas (and nothing much more than fields between here and there), one of which was taken off the watch list last week. V few cases locally, and nothing recently, but we’ve been tarred by the same broad brush as a vast area covered around 5 million other people. Very unlocal lockdown.

My DH and the Junior Engineer went to the beach this morning for an hour (we're about a 10 minute drive away in mid Cornwall) early, just before 9, and home before 11.
It was starting to fill up by 11 but it was still possible to social distance.
The queue for the ice cream when they went after lunch last week was a bit grim, so they just didn't get ice cream that time.

I feel for PPs who live in "resorts" - Newquay, St Ives etc - but where we are in the middle isn't rammed, in fact my neighbour who runs a cafe on the beach near here would like a few more people through her doors.

Cornwall Live (as previously stated) is a nasty stirring rag.

Mothership4two · 03/08/2020 12:48

We are staying in Cornwall (down on the Lizard) now. Everyone is being compliant and local businesses are being very careful. Beach doesn't feel busier than any other year and people are keeping their distance. We travelled down on Saturday and, although it was busy, it was less so than usual.

I know this is only day three, but we have just not seen any of the ignorant tourists reported in the media

Cornishandbored · 03/08/2020 13:03

I haven’t seen any poor behaviour in Cornwall either. Smile everyone is being lovely!

TheGreatWave · 03/08/2020 13:41

My family are currently all on holiday in South Devon (not me) My BIL has just posted a picture of my nephews playing cricket on the beach. The tide looks out and they are playing on the wet sand but no one else is in shot, beaches are not full everywhere.

Brummie accents though some of them, so maybe they will still be stoned despite us having holidayed there since 1979. Wink

Notfeelinggreattoday · 03/08/2020 16:14

Whilst i was in cornwall beaches were busy but plenty of room between ( more than 2 meters ) and people were mostly being sensible , always get a fee that aren't but locals are guilty of this too its not just holiday makers
Pubs and restaurants were good and well run except we
Saw a cafe serving food obviously local working and the girl kept puling her mask around and then serving , I watched her touch her face continuously hence we didnt eat there

dameofdilemma · 03/08/2020 16:22

Cornwall Live...Cornwalls answer to Fox News.

We’ve spent a week in Cornwall, three different beaches - somehow we miraculously managed to sit nowhere near anyone else (and I mean 15ft away at least) from anyone else.

Either we smell really bad or Cornwall Live is divisive, inflammatory, deliberately provocative garbage.

Scruffyoak · 03/08/2020 16:48

Recently had 2 weeks in Cornwall. Beaches were not packed.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/08/2020 04:52

I was in Cornwall last week, and was surprised how quiet it was. It took the train to places and they were empty. This was St Ives beach.

The South West is on course to be locked down next

And Fowey on a warm evening.

Was this pic taken on Friday? The weather was a shocker. Started off sunny and hot, then went to rain and fog in no time.

Had to show the people on my conference call, as they didn't believe me. One said "it's always sunny where you live!". Hmmm, really?

Forgottenwhatsleepis · 04/08/2020 09:30

@crunchymum exactly this!
There is so much coastline in Cornwall, why do people just try to cram on to the one beach, just because its Fistral!

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/08/2020 09:58

They don’t! The south coast beaches on the Roseland are rammed too. There’s just that many people here that without specific local knowledge, advanced reversing skills (that i do not possess!) and an adventurous spirit you’ll always end up in a busy beach!

frumpety · 04/08/2020 10:02

Was the pontoon still there at Moneypenny beach @Toddlerteaplease ?

Toddlerteaplease · 04/08/2020 10:03

I didn't see one.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/08/2020 10:05

@PhilCornwall1 no it was taken last Tuesday. The rain was torrential on the morning I went to St Ives though.

Cornishandbored · 04/08/2020 11:52

@ThursdayLastWeek Do you mean beaches like Towan / Porth Farm? Went there last week as it’s my favourite beach. Loads of cars but barely anyone on the beach.

It was lovely Smile but if it’s getting busier then I’ll avoid it until September x

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/08/2020 12:36

If you can get there before 10am you’re fine IME. But the NT have put lads of Do Not Park signs up along the verges thank Goodness, we could hardly get out of there the other day!

Cornishandbored · 04/08/2020 12:44

@ThursdayLastWeek Oh my goodness!! I had no idea. Yes we’ll keep away from this area until September. Otherwise we’ll be reversing for weeks Grin

Such a shame though! Thank you for letting me know Flowers

Mothership4two · 05/08/2020 00:42

We stay at the same place in Cornwall every summer and are there/here now. It is always busy in the South West in the school holidays and I don't think it is any worse than normal. In fact, coming down on Saturday, the roads were marginally quieter than normal. People have been spaced out on the beach.

CV is obviously being taken very seriously here. It takes the owners two hours to clean/fumigate our two bedroom holiday cottage. There are lots of footpaths around us that have been made one way. The local farm shop (our nearest shop) you are served at the door. The more fast food type places (fish and chips or pizzas) seem to be operating a prebook and collect system. We went to the pub tonight for the first time in 6 months and it was very strict and we felt safe.

I have been holidaying in Cornwall for over 40 years. For the past several years we usually come down at least twice a year (to the North and the South) and have never found the Cornish to be grumpy or make us feel unwelcome.

Cattermole · 05/08/2020 07:47

There was an extremely disingenuous article on the BBC yesterday beweailing the fact that there had been more visitors than ever to Perranporth beach - 14,000 in one day.
What ticked me off was that nowhere did it tell you that the average number of visitors to Perranporth beach in summer is 10,000 per day.

So it is a significant increase. But it's not an extraordinary one. And over a day an extra (average) 250 people an hour on a 2-mile long stretch of beach, presumably including people going in the water, is hardly unmanageable/

JaJaDingDong · 06/08/2020 08:40

I gave blood yesterday. The guy doing the blood taking tools me that we've had so few Covid instances in the SW our blood is being shipped all over the UK. His words were "we're keeping the country going" (which may have been a slight exaggeration Grin).

LittleBearPad · 06/08/2020 09:04

We’ve been in Cornwall. One of the beaches was busy but people were sitting a good 2 metres away from one another - often 3-4 metres. When you looked back from the shoreline the perspective didn’t show this and the beach looked rammed.

Every shop I’ve been in people are wearing masks and this was true at the services on the M5 with the exception of two twenty something men.

It’s Cornwall in August - it’s going to be busy but it’s not out of control as much as the doom merchants would like it to be

Emmie12345 · 06/08/2020 09:27

@LittleBearPad it’s packed to the gunnels. I live here and it’s miles busier than a normal August and beaches are packed with massive groups getting pissed and playing crap music .
