The South West is on course to be locked down next

According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

There was uproar regarding the numbers at Bournemouth & other Dorset beaches back in June, there was (rightly) so much hysteria at the photos of crowded beaches. Yet now we have this info:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/53519668
www.lgcplus.com/politics/coronavirus/exclusive-bournemouth-beach-crowds-did-not-lead-to-covid-spike-24-07-2020/

I’m not convinced you can automatically assume more people being on beaches is going to cause a massive second wave.

Crunchymum · 01/08/2020 08:49

@DobbyTheHouseElk

I’m not sure how well covid transmits on a beach. Sitting away from someone else.

Unless you use public loos, shops etc.

Surely sitting on a beach is low risk? I only like empty beaches so it’s not for me, but I know plenty of secret places.

The whole point is, beaches are too crowded to adhere to SD rules.

People are packed in like metaphoric sardines.

PhilCornwall1 · 01/08/2020 08:49

The elderly are terrified. In their local shops they now have loads of non mask wearing, non SD tourists.

The elderly aren't terrified where I live, some are just plain bloody aggressive. Business as usual.

Littlecaf · 01/08/2020 08:49

Brighton is packed too, what I don’t understand is people who arrive at their destination, see it’s full then continue to find a spot etc. Also why would you get on a packed train and go to the seaside on the hottest day of the year in the middle of a global pandemic?

It’s not just about the r number though, cases need to be rising substantially. Have a look at the Zoë Covid data - it’s fairly obvious what areas are coming off worse.

@Crunchymum

What always astounds me, Covid aside, is why anyone would want to go to a beach that packed? You are on the coast, keep driving and you'll come to another beach???

Well quite, but how else would you show off your ability to park in the most ludicrous place ever ? DH went off to the seaside yesterday, I told him he would need to leave at 6 to be in with a chance of a parking space or bit of beach , they left at 9.30, he spent 5 and a half hours trying to find anywhere along a 50 mile stretch of coast that wasn't rammed and then came home.

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/08/2020 08:51

Yes haha the definition of South West is very broad!

I dunno, Perranporth isn’t for me because anyway but there is plenty of room on that beach! Ordinarily you wouldn’t be able to see the little paths of sand between group in that photo so I’m not sure it’s as bad as it looks.

Also Cornwall Live are a shower of shit stirrers.

Sanch1 · 01/08/2020 08:51

Please don't scaremonger! Plymouth has had 8 cases in two weeks, Cornwall and Devon about 25 each, in two weeks! The R is notoriously unrealisable at low infection rates. Devon is in the bottom 10 lowest infection rates at 1/100000.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/08/2020 08:51

PhilCornwall1 I wonder if you live near my MIL. Grin

AlternativePerspective · 01/08/2020 08:52

COVID aside, why in God’s name would anyone want to go and sit on a beach with half a million other people? That’s hardly going to be a fun experience is it?

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/08/2020 08:53

Because it’s better than not being ale to go to a beach at all?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/08/2020 08:53

Some of the photos are taken at a deliberate angle to make it appear people are like sardines, yesterday the beaches I saw were busy, but masses of spaces between people.

Theimpossiblegirl · 01/08/2020 08:53

The R number in the South West has been above 1 for a while, but the number of cases is still very low so it's less relevant.
The South West is a big place made up of urban, rural and coastal areas.
Even with tourism, it's a small minority of places that are that busy.

jessstan2 · 01/08/2020 08:55

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane

No, Cornwall is naice people’s summer playground.
and some not so nice! (I'm nice so I'm told and used to go there a lot at one time).

If I was a Cornish resident I wouldn't be keen on people from elsewhere bringing Covid-19 to my doorstep. However Cornwall depends on tourism. Can't have it all ways I suppose.

It beats me why anyone is bothering with a holiday this year anyway.

Pelleas · 01/08/2020 08:57

We went to a huge but quiet beach in the north east a couple of weeks ago. Even that got fairly busy as the tide came in and the area people could sit on got smaller and smaller. We left before high tide.

PhilCornwall1 · 01/08/2020 08:57

Also Cornwall Live are a shower of shit stirrers.

You aren't wrong there. Constantly Tweeting bullshit yesterday.

They had a pop last week saying one of the popular beaches here was "overflowing", it wasn't at all. Everyone distanced properly, there wasn't a problem.

Lovemusic33 · 01/08/2020 08:58

No, numbers are very low here despite the R number and there hasn’t been any larger outbreaks like we are seeing in Yorkshire. We haven’t had any deaths in our local hospital for a while and only 4/5 cases conformed in the past week so I wouldn’t see it as a threat.

PurrBox · 01/08/2020 09:02

I was on a beach in Dorset yesterday. It was a beach with a 10 minute walk in, very big, spectacular views, and masses of room for everyone. If you walked an additional 10 minutes, you got a 200 meter space to yourself...

NoWordForFluffy · 01/08/2020 09:02

What always astounds me, Covid aside, is why anyone would want to go to a beach that packed? You are on the coast, keep driving and you'll come to another beach?

We go to a local beach relatively often and it's huge, loads and loads of space. We have photos from hot days when it's busy where it looks like we're alone. The reason for this is that we walk for a few minutes on arrival to find a good spot.

However, near the entrance to the beach is rammed. People nigh-on on top of each other. They get to the beach and literally plonk themselves on the first tiny gap they can see, right next to the previous people. It baffles us every single time! There's absolutely no need to do it, at all, as there is loads and loads of empty beach a short walk away. Confused

I reckon they're the same kind of people who park next to the only car in a deserted car park too!

missyB1 · 01/08/2020 09:02

We are Gloucestershire (so count as south west), we’ve never had high numbers of Covid here and still appears to be quiet (Dh is NHS).
I did hear on news last night that’s there’s a bit of a problem in Swindon though which isn’t that far away.

Choppedupapple · 01/08/2020 09:03

I kind of hope that we are, the local idiots gathering in big groups are pissing me off!

Splodgetastic · 01/08/2020 09:04

I would never go to Cornwall on holiday. Who wants to go somewhere on holiday that you feel unwelcome? I even had an email from the Cornish tourist board that I felt was kind of saying “yeah, come to Cornwall, but actually we’d rather you didn’t bother”. I love holidaying in other parts of England (is Cornwall England? - debate!), but with attitudes like that you can see why people would rather go to Spain where English tourists are welcomed with open arms (in my experience).

Cornishandbored · 01/08/2020 09:07

Cornwall Live are utter wankers. If you see them sharing stories about tourists (usually negative stories) make sure report the stories as fake news or something. It usually IS fake news.

They really need to be accountable for their shit stirring. It’s causing rifts.

Not long ago they shared a story about the M5 and A30 being jammed. When actual travel cameras showed both roads weren’t jammed at all!

Sad makes me so angry that some locals believe every word they report

IKEA888 · 01/08/2020 09:09

It isn't just the R number that is taken into account it's the R number in combination with other things.
We all know why the areas were v specific in the northwest and we know why.
As for people who live in tourist areas. Some will also be anti tourist

Pelleas · 01/08/2020 09:10

Who wants to go somewhere on holiday that you feel unwelcome?

Do you mean this year, or generally? We are obviously not going to Cornwall this year, but normally we go every year and we've always been made to feel very welcome by the locals

IncrediblySadToo · 01/08/2020 09:11

@Fressia123

I'm in Cornwall and it's extremely busy, I do think we're next.
That's Boris and his 'Take your spade' nonsense.

Personally I don't think people should be going out of their own area, except for emergencies or the occasional family thing, if necessary (to see parents etc if they feel it's necessary)

Yes, I know that's not great for tourism, but neither are loads of deaths or lockdowns.

We all HAVE to behave responsibly and not like it's 'all over' or won't spread because we fancy a day/week at the seaside!
