The South West is on course to be locked down next

According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

Another one saying it's a bit annoying to be in the South West and lumped in with beaches and tourists on posts like this. I'm in Wiltshire - people drive through here to get to more exciting places and our cases are really low (geographically we include Swindon but they are their own borough). Our cases are SO low, everyone is wearing masks here, and DS's nursery hasn't had any children with reported cases.

cologne4711 · 02/08/2020 08:57

Rubbish left anywhere literally blows my mind... Why the hell

Don't know.

But isn't Cornwall always packed in August? It's the main reason I would never go (and the fact that my mum lives in Devon, so no point going any further).

People squeezed together on the pavements to allow cars to pass, no room to SD, very few masks being worn Of course, cars are far more important than pedestrians. The lack of space for pedestrians has been an issue from the outset of lockdown, and caused the conflicts between runners, walkers, cyclists etc. You don't need masks outside though, and the chances of passing on something outside is very small if you are momentarily passing by. It's the inside spaces that I would want to avoid.

BBCONEANDTWO · 02/08/2020 08:59

How are we going to get out of this ever. During lock down people were mostly compliant but once it eased it is harder than ever to go back to what we were in.

HandsOffMyRights · 02/08/2020 09:04

We went away to "get away from it all" not the virus, as we can't out run that, but working and homeschooling relentlessly throughout and living in a built up, urban area that is the furthest place away from the sea in this country. We needed some sea air, but avoided the big Dorset beaches as most were rammed.

I've been going to St Ives for 47 years, but in recent years it's been so rammed. My beach pictures from last year look no different to those of this year in the papers though in terms of numbers.

BKCRMP · 02/08/2020 09:40

This is definitely on another level busy. Presumably because people aren't going abroad but want hot beach days

@Splodgetastic

I must admit, I’ve only been to Cornwall once, over twenty years ago. It was okay, but there is always a lot of publicity about how the Cornish hate the English, so I don’t think I would go there on holiday. Same reason my DH won’t go to Scotland or Ireland.
That's such a shame Splodge. Of all the places we've travelled, the Scottish people we've met have been by far the warmest and most welcoming, truly lovely. The stunning scenery is the icing on the cake. We'd move to the Highlands in a flash if we didn't have caring responsibilities down here.
JaJaDingDong · 02/08/2020 10:11

Swindon is South West, though as it's a unitary authority (or whatever they are called now), I don't know if Swindon figures are included in those of the SW.
However, Swindon has had a couple of (contained?) outbreaks: Royal Mail depot, a logistics depot, and Honda (I think), which will be pushing the number of infections up. I don't think there's much Covid at loose in the community.
(Live in N Wilts, so not Swindon, but get the Swindon news).

You always get the "Cornwall for the Cornish" lot, but you'll find with them they have either never left the county or are complete hypocrites, it's best to just ignore them.

I live in a town that gets busy with tourists in the summer and don't mind at all, the place comes alive and has a good feel about it if the weather is good.

Ahava3 · 02/08/2020 11:28

I know that quite a lot of families in our area were asked to produce swabs? Could it be that the increase in cases is increased sampling and many of these cases are aysmptomatic? And very possibly, according to data from WHO therefore not spreading the virus?

Porcupineinwaiting · 02/08/2020 16:03

@Ahava3 if everyone was asymptomatic and couldn't spread it then it wouldn't be spreading.

Figgygal · 02/08/2020 16:09

I’m in south Gloucestershire so south west but our cases remain v v low there would be no justification for a lockdown here
We are 2ish hours from Devon, 3+ from Cornwall if that’s where the issue is

We avoid the cities at the moment and will continue to do so for the foreseeable

Ahava3 · 02/08/2020 16:17

Porcupineinwaiting...Not true... many people are pre symptomatic, they will then eventually get symptoms, these people can spread it. Also if the droplets live on surfaces for a prolonged amount of time... people unwittingly spread the virus through touch without realising it in many different ways.

Pliudev · 02/08/2020 17:40

...' with attitudes like that you can see why people would rather go to Spain where English tourists are welcomed with open arms (in my experience).'
Splodge, you have to make up your own mind (and obviously you have). I live in the far SW and my son lives in Barcelona. The first time I visited him in B we encountered an anti tourist demonstration and a couple of years ago the city had graffiti reading 'refugees welcome tourists go home'. You see tourism isn't always kind to the people who live there year round. House prices are high and wages are low and there is resistance to any kind of industrial development that might affect tourist numbers. Now we have the added problem of people from outside the area (where covid numbers have been relatively low) possibly bringing the virus with them. Can you really blame us for wishing you would all stay at home?

Cloudspotter · 02/08/2020 17:45

Honestly, we have to balance off the various risks.

There is a risk of adverse impact from COVID on our local health services and personal health of individuals.

There are also massive risks of sustained and permanent damage to the economy - right from top (tax revenues to pay for public services) to bottom - people's own dreams and livelihoods being crushed and finished forever.

I fear that at times the anxious curtain-twitchers are winning, especially on mumsnet. We all have to start living again at some point. Hard pushed public sector and key workers - who have had any foreign holiday aspirations squashed - going on sensible, socially distanced holidays in the UK. I struggle to find it possible to think they should instead stay at home. We've all got to keep the economy moving.

This was yesterday.. Try to imagine how busy the village was too.. Madness...

The Scots and Irish don't hate the English (and a lot of the people you will encounter on a trip to Scotland have English accents anyway). And there's far more space.

Where I live in Hampshire the numbers are lower than in Cornwall. I know, you're going to say it's all because of those virus shedding tourists, but it isn't. The numbers haven't been high at any point where I live so there's no evidence at all that the tourists are bringing the virus with them, unless they have come from a particularly high risk area like Leicester.

I agree....its a double edged sword really. I live in ND, I'll be honest, I'm reluctant to go out much at the moment. However you do need some that are less worried to eat in our restaurants, cafes and put an injection of cash into the economy. We can enjoy it for the other 8/9 months of the year. I dont know...I'm ok with sensible people, but ones flouting the rules, I'd rather they didnt come.
Littlemissdaredevil · 02/08/2020 18:07

No cases reported in Cornwall today and 3 in Devon.

Popped to the a local beach mid/late afternoon. It very busy. No social distancing at all. Didn’t see a single person wearing a face covering part from people working in shops. Went into a pub/restaurant for a quick bite to eat. There was a large sign asking people to wait to be seated (so the owner could control number in the pub). I was waiting by this sign and several families were pushing past me. Hand sanitiser dotted everywhere. I think I was the only person who used it whilst I was there!

Littlemissdaredevil · 02/08/2020 18:13

The locals are welcoming tourists to Devon but please try your best to SD and use hand sanitiser where available!

Where I live (non-touristy area) there is a near 100% compliance with wearing masks in shops, etc. I have seen a handful of people not wearing face coverings but they have been wearing sunflower lanyards

MaterEstIratus · 02/08/2020 18:25

Just come back from Devon where social distancing was VERY hard work and nonexistent from many. The teens were hanging around the streets in large groups - hugging people their friends introduced them to. I would think it likely they are taking the virus round the country with them rather than infecting much of the SW.

RoyEastmannKodak · 02/08/2020 18:30

@madcatladyforever

I wouldn't be surprised, I'm south west NHS and here we have people with covid-19 not bothering to isolate just going out regardless and the beaches wall to wall packed. I just feel so angry that nobody can be responsible just for one lousy year. Fuck them all.
Really? ShockHow do you know people with Covid 19 are going out and about? Are they ill or symptomless? Worrying ... Sad
Foramen · 02/08/2020 18:52

I've notice here in West Cornwall how the visitors go maskless and don't SD - and some look at you as if you are doing something wrong if you show or say anything critical about their behaviour. We locals have to shun the beaches we would normally go to through the summer because of the inconsiderate attitude of some visitors and because, yes, we have "low numbers" of cases down here - but we want to keep it that way! Many of our businesses need the tourists but it remains to be seen (by those of us who survive) whether or not the right balance has been struck. In any case, in the UK as a whole we have become used to the Govt not knowing its Arsenal from its elbow when it comes to dealing with the virus. I could go on....and on!

I think they prefer Chelsea. Football

FelicisNox · 02/08/2020 19:12

yawn

The whole country is facing a 2nd wave. We already know this yet here is ANOTHER Covid thread.

Next!

AramintaLee · 02/08/2020 19:25

Not sure the SW will be next. I read the other day that only 22 people were in hospital with Coronavirus and none on a ventilator. That's for the entire SW.

I think the R-rate is thrown when the number is so low which is why it's not worth looking into it too much (if the R-rate for the SW really meant something, it would have been locked down weeks ago)

As for where it will be in a month or so after everyone and their dog has gone there for a holiday... now that's a different matter.
