According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

‘Tesco delivery booked and we're jot interested in shops or restaurants while we're there’

You might not realise this but there are some fab local farm shops that will deliver lovely fresh veg, fruit, fish meat etc. Local restaurants are now organising take aways the food is just a good.

It's great if we can not just holiday in the UK but support our local businesses too.

@madcatladyforever

I wouldn't be surprised, I'm south west NHS and here we have people with covid-19 not bothering to isolate just going out regardless and the beaches wall to wall packed. I just feel so angry that nobody can be responsible just for one lousy year. Fuck them all.
Which hosp? So you know of people who have it and are out and about??

How do you know (a) they have covid and (b) they are not isolating?

And of course the beaches are packed. But I bet if you look closer people are 2m apart (as they were in Bournemouth but nobody told you that - it was the disgusting litter that was the problem there).

Proudtocare · 01/08/2020 15:15

Yes, I agree.

Orangeblossom777 · 01/08/2020 15:16

Todays news here, the numbers seem very low...

Sorry Proudtocare, I think a lot of people decided they hated Cornwall during lockdown and seem to have switched allegiance to Devon instead!

Pericombobulations · 01/08/2020 15:27

Thanks @Janleverton we have been lucky that the company were happy to move our booking to next year so havent lost money and the booking stands. Just need to hope and pray that the infection rate decreases and / or we get a suitable workable vaccine! On the plus side, I have been going to that beach on holiday for most of my life, so know it is waiting for the next time, however long that may be.

If I wasnt in the vulnerable but not shielding groups, I may have risked it last month, but needs must.

Yes I am envious of all those who live there or have gone on holiday, but the lack of health care provisions have made it very unlikely I will be lucky enough to move there as was my dream. Its also at times like these that it becomes more obvious how knife edge the health care in Cornwall particularly is and how easy it is to be overwhelmed. (says the person who spent most of the first day of one holiday travelling round minor injury units trying to find one with an open X-Ray department on a Sunday and then waiting for hours in Launceston.

As long as they're respectful I dont mind too much. Double edged sword really. We would love to get out, but it's good for the local businesses....I keep heading for the moors!

From Devon Live
*The number of coronavirus cases confirmed in the last week has risen in Cornwall – but fallen across Devon.
The figures show that 41 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 31 new cases confirmed last week.

It means an average of 5.88 cases a day across the two counties are being confirmed, compared to 4.57 last week.

But while the number of confirmed cases in Cornwall have nearly doubled in the last week, going from 10 to 19, and there has been a small rise from 3 to 5 in Torbay, numbers in Plymouth have remained the same, while across the rest of Devon, cases dropped from 15 to 12.
Torbay and Plymouth are seeing an average of 0.7 cases a day confirmed, with 1.7 cases a day in the Devon County Council area, and 2.7 cases a day in Cornwall.*

Still VERY LOW number of cases compared to many parts of the country

boys3 · 01/08/2020 15:41

This is from yesterday's PHE weekly surveillance report. Map showing case rates across England.

The issue with this though is that you'd need to know where to find the weekly PHE surveillance report, and know where within the 35 page report to find it.

Whilst the Graun map is no doubt well intentioned it remains utter nonsense but until the government / PHE start making the weekly PHE map easily accessible, and probably with a time series option so you could see an area week by week it is little wonder that people are basing views on whatever is easiest to find.

‘Tesco delivery booked and we're jot interested in shops or restaurants while we're there’

Worst kind of holiday maker! You don’t even plan to support the local economy, just Tesco! No wonder residents hate you.

@Bluewavescrashing not all locals feel like parrot! I hope you have a lovely holiday, sounds perfect.

We aren’t all so rude. Most of us are welcoming holiday makers. It’s just that the rude people are louder.

MoreListeningLessChatting · 01/08/2020 15:44

@boys3

Indeed - clear to see that the SW is still low as far as Covid goes.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 01/08/2020 15:54

People are getting Tesco deliveries and taking food to holiday homes because a few weeks ago there was a lot of threads with posters saying they didn't want the holidaymakers in their shops buying all the food. For this reason we also took a lot of food with us so as not to annoy the locals.

MissSarahThane · 01/08/2020 16:02

There's a more detailed map produced by phe available here

Yetiyoga · 01/08/2020 16:21

I feel like we can't win 🤣
People need to be careful because you'll put people off visiting in future. I am glad to see some people from Cornwall on here who are supportive of tourists :)

LakieLady · 01/08/2020 16:25

It’s packed down here yep - never seen it so busy . If they lockdown here will they send all the tourists home?

You might have to keep them for the duration! Grin

I suppose it depends on their accommodation. If they're on campsites or in hotels, and they have to close, then I guess they would. But if they're in holiday cottages, they're no different from someone living in a house, I suppose.

MrsGoggings85 · 01/08/2020 16:26

@earlydoors42 we’re in West Yorks too but not in the lockdown area....not sure it has everything to with case numbers in all areas, a lot to do with Eid though - think they were scared it would constitute to massive outbreaks, it must be so frustrating for you as Kirklees LA area is massive and whilst cases are definitely rising in alarmingly in some towns they are coming down in others...shame they couldnt have done it by town/city 😕

LakieLady · 01/08/2020 17:07

People are catching it by .... going into pubs and breaking the rules on going up to, and hanging around, the bar

I don't understand why this isn't being managed by the pub staff.

We've been to 3 different pubs since they reopened. each one, we had to stop and give our contact details on arrival, then we were shown to a table and our order was taken, drinks and menus were brought to the table.

One pub had a blackboard explaining the queueing arrangement for the toilets, which are in an awkward narrow corridor, another had a "queue here" sign and 2m markers and in the 3rd, there's only one ladies and a sign on the door so people wanting a wee can see if there's anyone already in there.

It was perfectly civilised and Covid-secure.

Orangeblossom777 · 01/08/2020 17:43

It should calm down though in next few weeks as the summer holidays end?

It will be much quieter then.

CountessFrog · 01/08/2020 17:45

They can lock me down in Cornwall for as long as they like once I arrive next week.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/08/2020 17:47

Here's my local beach two days ago. I won't be going to the beach until September.☹️
I've also heard the "I came down here to get away from all that" from a person attempting to enter a shop without using sanitiser.
Please, tourists, remember that this is also people's home, not a theme park.
And don't use up all the Tesco delivery slots...it's blooming hard to get one anyway!

The South West is on course to be locked down next
Orangeblossom777 · 01/08/2020 17:48

On the PHE map there are higher levels in Cumbria / Carlisle area than the SW, there are also rising levels in some parts of Wales too, more so (not on that map but others) and area on border to Wales too

So would have thought those areas more at risk than SW

Thegenderbreadperson · 01/08/2020 17:54

Tesco delivery booked and we're jot interested in shops or restaurants while we're there’

*This does make me laugh - in one breath people are excusing themselves for flocking on holiday in their droves by saying that the Southwest needs tourist money and in the next post you read a comment that makes it clear that the visitor intends to use a national supermarket and likely stay in a property owned by people out of the county, so other than perhaps a one off contribution to keep the local Tesco going, the visitors are providing little to support or bring income to the local community.

CountessFrog · 01/08/2020 17:55

The thing about Tesco is weird.

Not that I shop at Tesco, I shop at Sainsbury’s, and I have a delivery pass. It’s possible to book a delivery for when we arrive.

Our cottage owner encouraged this. She said it would reduce numbers in shops. I decided against it.

You are suggesting the opposite. You are suggesting we should go into the shops.

I could be forgiven for thinking that locals don’t actually want us to eat. FWIW I’m going to Marks and Spencer food at Hayle and spending my money there. You can all keep your deliveries and your Tesco!

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 01/08/2020 18:01

In Cornwall on holiday at the moment. Village we are in is a popular but very small harbour village and we are in a cottage belonging to PILs. The people working on shops are being quite friendly, and there are posters everywhere reminding us that "residents are practising social distancing".

The beaches are busy but there is plenty of space to SD. All restaurants and pubs are collecting contact details and some are taking temperatures.

Places to visit are mostly requiring bookings. It's much more quiet here than in previous years, but nowhere near as busy as where we live, which is London.
