The South West is on course to be locked down next

According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

My local authority in West Yorkshire just got locked down even though our numbers are falling. There is nothing logical going on.

Fressia123 · 01/08/2020 08:15

I'm in Cornwall and it's extremely busy, I do think we're next.

PrayingandHoping · 01/08/2020 08:17

The experts say that because the numbers are still so low in the south west is that the R number is somewhat irrelevant.

Other factors need to be looked at

PhilCornwall1 · 01/08/2020 08:21

I'm sure there are quite a few down here hoping we will be.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 01/08/2020 08:24

No, Cornwall is naice people’s summer playground.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 01/08/2020 08:25

Eek.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 01/08/2020 08:26

It did for me.

Southwest covers a wide area though!

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2020 08:27

There are low cases though. The R isn’t the only factor.

madcatladyforever · 01/08/2020 08:27

I wouldn't be surprised, I'm south west NHS and here we have people with covid-19 not bothering to isolate just going out regardless and the beaches wall to wall packed.
I just feel so angry that nobody can be responsible just for one lousy year. Fuck them all.

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/08/2020 08:35

I was under the impression that because the population of the south west is (generally) not densely populated the R rate is less relevant than in cities.

Also factors like less public transport, much more outdoor space etc etc etc

I really hope we’re not locked down, I’ve enjoyed being back at work!

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/08/2020 08:37

Also I cannot see local authorities sending home all the tourists and their money until the govt says so!

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2020 08:37

I really hope we’re not locked down, I’ve enjoyed being back at work!

The new measures don’t stop people going to work, it’s stopping meeting other households. I’d be very sad about that.

Marylou62 · 01/08/2020 08:38

This was yesterday.. Try to imagine how busy the village was too.. Madness...

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/08/2020 08:39

It’s not rocket science is it. The SW has had low rates, now the roads are rammed with people from all over brining covid to the SW. Yesterday I went to a seaside town and the beach was busy. Not usual summer busy, but no masks and no SD. The elderly are terrified. In their local shops they now have loads of non mask wearing, non SD tourists.

starrynight19 · 01/08/2020 08:39

The lock down in the north has been about the rising infection cases as well as the r number.

BKCRMP · 01/08/2020 08:39

We have considerably lower cases which skews the r value

SockYarn · 01/08/2020 08:42

R numbers are irrelevant when cases are so low. One person infects two others - the R number is 2. Should we panic? No, because there are still only 2 new cases.

Track and trace is the important stuff now.

I can see you photo. I'm on the mobile site.

What always astounds me, Covid aside, is why anyone would want to go to a beach that packed? You are on the coast, keep driving and you'll come to another beach???

SexTrainGlue · 01/08/2020 08:45

It's both R and the number of cases

If either of those is getting high, then additional measures might be needed.

But even wi a high R, if there are only a handful of cases, then further measures will not be needed, or at least not yet.

I wouid hope that there is careful monitoring everywhere, by now, so that trends are properly examined, and measures brought in when appropriate.

And yes, if the rise becomes sustained (numbers well up) or more generalised (cropping up in oodles of places even if low numbers in each), then that wouid be concerning. And measures might follow.

For resort areas, it might mean a ban on visitors to hotspot areas.

That really would put staycation back to its original meaning

BKCRMP · 01/08/2020 08:45

@Crunchymum to be fair along the dorset/devon/Cornwall coast lines nearly every single beach yesterday was rammed. As a local we avoid like the plague on a hot day.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/08/2020 08:47

I’m not sure how well covid transmits on a beach. Sitting away from someone else.

Unless you use public loos, shops etc.

Surely sitting on a beach is low risk? I only like empty beaches so it’s not for me, but I know plenty of secret places.

Cornishandbored · 01/08/2020 08:47

They really need to be more accurate with their definition of “South West”. It’s quite misleading really.

I’m happy the tourists are here. And I believe people can enjoy their holiday as one household safely - providing they don’t mingle households (but unfortunately there’s lots of mingling going on. Equally - locals are mingling households too)

Just hope the government finds a happy middle.
