According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

@Cornishandbored

Usually during the antiCornish threads (I know this wasn’t intended to be one though!) there’s a poster who is really bitter about Cornwall. Not long ago they were caught out by failing to name change several times and posted multiple antiCornwall messages.

MN had to remove the thread because of all the “sockying”. Their words!

Smile

Glad we’re all in agreement about the Cornwall / Devon / Somerset/ Gloucester Live all being awful! Grin

I’m in Essex and Essex Live is awful too (they’re all owned by Reach) they’ve been banned from posting on my towns facebook page as they spout such rubbish.
SmileTolerantly · 01/08/2020 09:40

Looking at the latest PHE map, I doubt it.

My local authority in West Yorkshire just got locked down even though our numbers are falling. There is nothing logical going on.
No areas in the North are in lockdown. You can go out to all shops, even the non-essential. You can go the pub, hairdressers etc, the same as the rest of us. You have just had one restriction in meeting up with other households indoors or in your garden.
You aren't really being logical yourself.

Splodgetastic · 01/08/2020 09:43

I must admit, I’ve only been to Cornwall once, over twenty years ago. It was okay, but there is always a lot of publicity about how the Cornish hate the English, so I don’t think I would go there on holiday. Same reason my DH won’t go to Scotland or Ireland.

Splodgetastic · 01/08/2020 09:43

(And the email from the tourist board just backed that up for me!)

frumpety · 01/08/2020 09:43

I think a lot of it has been spread by community NHS staff, unavoidably going from house to house

@Serin got any figures to back that up ?

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/08/2020 09:46

No worries Splodge. I hope you enjoy your holidays wherever you do go.

I would recommend taking most of the 'publicity' you see with a pinch of salt though.

tiredanddangerous · 01/08/2020 09:47

It'll never lockdown during holiday season. It's all about the money isn't it?

OrangeSamphire · 01/08/2020 09:48

I don’t think we will. Actual case numbers are low. But I shall be pissed off if it does happen as a result of tourist numbers not being restricted.

I’m glad people have been able to come here to Cornwall on holiday but honestly the volume of people is ridiculous. Numbers should have been restricted.

We’re not actually dependent on tourism here. That is a myth perpetuated by Visit Cornwall who make money from charging hospitality businesses a membership fee. It is a big industry but it only accounts for about 20% of GVA, and a far lower percentage of actual jobs.

As a resident, we’re pretty much in lockdown again because everywhere is so damned busy. I’d like to go out and enjoy the beaches, but don’t feel we can.

BKCRMP · 01/08/2020 09:49

Cornish don't hate tourists but they like any other tourist location hates the inconsiderate ones who seem to think going on holiday = leaving their brains at home. Our LA has finally started towing cars just dumped wherever by tourists to go to the beach. We are exceptionally busy, most likely due to no one being abroad. 90% of tourists are fine but being on holiday people a small minority seem to use as an excuse for being an asshole.

WitsEnding · 01/08/2020 09:49

And a screenshot- can you tell I’m worried ...

@User87471643901065319

You can go to the pub, a restaurant, a tourist attraction (but you can’t stay anywhere overnight on holiday), the hairdresser, nail bar etc but you can’t sit in your Aunty Pat’s conservatory?? Or meet your mum in Preston, in a large park at a social distance. How’s that logical?

Maybe if Aunty Pat got herself a card reader, and called herself a business, her conservatory would become magically safe 🤔

ThursdayLastWeek · 01/08/2020 09:52

We’ve only been going to beaches by getting up early and getting there before 10 and not staying til long. It’s possible, but requires driving to get to a less well known beach.

The lack of local knowledge is what puts me off going anywhere this year - usually it’s annoying but not 'dangerous' to rock up at a popular place at the same time as everyone else.

PickledLilly · 01/08/2020 09:53

I live in a very touristy part of South Devon and it is currently absolutely packed with tourists mostly from the midlands going by accents. The holiday parks are full booked, local attractions that are ‘limiting numbers’ were sending cars to the overflow car parks yesterday and places like the sea front are noticeably busy.

The local economy desperately needs the tourists but there is some fear that this rush of people from parts of the country which have been far worse affected than us could lead to a spike in cases in towns which previously have been largely unaffected. I understand the need for us to welcome tourists to save local businesses but I also really, really want my children to be able to go back to school in September.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 01/08/2020 09:53

I’m local to the south west and we cannot move for it being absolutely rammed, to get shopping or even go out for the day is an absolute pain in the ass as the roads and supermarkets are so busy. We aren’t even in a “popular” area either!

The government won’t lock us down, or I highly doubt it due to the economy down here, local lives will just have to be collateral damage Confused

EvilPea · 01/08/2020 09:54

We’ve been above 1 for about 2 or 3weeks now and no lockdown.
It’s to do with how many people have it in an area.
Apparently 5 (if memory serves me right it’s out of 1 million) is good and average Leicester was 90 and Manchester was 150.

neutralintelligence · 01/08/2020 09:55

I think this is misleading because the South-West covers a large and varied area. I think an increase in numbers in Swindon, Wiltshire, may be adding to the South-West numbers. But Swindon is really at the extreme edge of the South-West and wouldn't be affecting most of the area.

What I also don't understand about British beaches is why we don't do what they are doing in other countries and marking out boxes on the beach so that beaches are safe and not overcrowded. The images I've seen from Spain are carefully marked-out beaches and people queueing to get a place. Once the beach has reached capacity, then presumably it is one-in-one-out. We could do this in the UK if the government really wanted to. Instead of showing photos of how overcrowded the beaches were yesterday and saying how bad it is, why not do something useful about it?

Thegenderbreadperson · 01/08/2020 09:56

I was wondering if Devon and Cornwall get locked down will the tourists have to stay locked down there? Else if they are all dispersing home surely it’s spreading things more? Maybe some people will get a longer holiday than they bargained for?! Grin

LakieLady · 01/08/2020 09:56

I would never go to Cornwall on holiday. Who wants to go somewhere on holiday that you feel unwelcome?

We go to Cornwall a lot. This will be the first year in 10 years that we haven't had at least one trip to Cornwall. We've never felt unwelcome, quite the opposite, in fact.

But we won't be going this year because we think it's irresponsible. We live in a part of the country that gets a lot of tourists and tbh we're not thrilled about people coming here.

Cornishandbored · 01/08/2020 09:56

@Splodgetastic Oooooh 20 years ago it was very different down here. Even I decided to bugger off to university to get away from it. But it’s very different now. Much more diverse (thank goodness) and pretty forward thinking.

Most of my colleagues come from other countries and they love it here.

If you ever fancy giving Cornwall another go - there are much quieter places to go (if you don’t like crowds). I counted 4 empty secret beaches on Thursday Smile

Highways England has sent locals a letter today explaining about the new roadworks between Chiverton Roundabout and Carland Cross - they’re making it a dual carriageway and ditching the awful roundabouts.

So in a few years when it’s all completed- it’ll be easier to get here too!

We’re actually moving away in 2021 and then I’ll become a regular tourist too. Although I’m not sure I can afford to come to Cornwall on holiday and I can’t stay with family as their houses are too small!

It’s all swings and roundabouts isn’t it Smile

PhilCornwall1 · 01/08/2020 10:06

Looking online this morning, Whitty has said that visiting family and friends should be sacrificed for schools to open in September and some other bugger on SAGE has said that pubs will need to close as well to be able to open schools.

This could well have been reported before today though, as I've given up watching the news or listening to the government.

So no sod will be going anywhere again soon if they throw a local lockdown or two into the mix.

shallpoetwake · 01/08/2020 10:11

If the beaches there are anything like in Dorset and Sussex then I can't say I'm surprised - all those idiots thinking it's OK to sit like sardines on the beach.

CurseryKinkajoo · 01/08/2020 10:15

Another Cornwall resident here. What has been interesting with some holiday makers visiting has been comments made. A couple of people said that they’re finding the social distancing rules much stricter in our town than their home towns. And 1 or 2 muppets have expressed surprise that it’s being enforced as they’ve come on holiday to get away from all this Covid stuff Grin

Cornwall live is overly dramatic and tends to paint all holidaymakers as evil when the vast majority are perfectly normal, considerate human beings. They like to do the same with students as well. It’s all very divisive.

Anyway, I do think it’a good that people are visiting as most of my local friends are avoiding bars/restaurants/cafes etc so tourist money is needed to support them. Plus we tend not to go to the beach for the day but nip down for a couple of hours in the evening when it is quieter.
