The South West is on course to be locked down next

According to the data, the South West’s R number is the same as the North West at +1. Will local councils be trying to sort it before the government impose official stricter lockdown measures as in the NW?

It beats me why anyone is bothering with a holiday this year anyway.

It was already booked.
The owners have lost enough income as it is.
I want to be somewhere that isn't home especially as that is currently also work.
We don't have covid.
I want to.

Yetiyoga · 01/08/2020 11:12

Blimey. You'd swear that Cornwall is the capital of the South West judging by this post. The South West covers a large area. I live in a city in the south west, we've had fairly low cases overall, I don't know of anyone personally who has had the virus living near me (a relative has had it but lives in Wales). I am going on a mini break to Cornwall in a few weeks and I was really looking forward. Starting to feel like we won't be welcome now!
I get being worried but not all holiday makers are magically walking around with the virus.

Cases and cases per 100,000 (in bold )for each SW region authority for the seven days to 27th July.

Swindon yes an area of concern, but all the rest are below, and mainly well below the England rate per 100,000 for that period.

Swindon is of course nearer London (80 miles) than it is to Exeter (120 miles) or Penzance (230) miles.

Swindon 66 29.70
Cotswold 6 6.68
Stroud 7 5.84
Bristol, City of 24 5.18
Cheltenham 6 5.16
Exeter 5 3.81
Wiltshire 19 3.80
Torbay 5 3.67
Cornwall & Isles of Scilly 19 3.32
Tewkesbury 3 3.16
North Devon 3 3.09
South Somerset 5 2.97
East Devon 4 2.73
Bath and North East Somerset 5 2.59
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole 10 2.53
Mid Devon 2 2.43
South Gloucestershire 6 2.10
Plymouth 5 1.91
North Somerset 4 1.86
Mendip 1 0.87
Sedgemoor 1 0.81
Gloucester 1 0.77
Teignbridge 1 0.75
Somerset West and Taunton 1 0.64
Dorset 2 0.53
South Hams 0 0.00
Torridge 0 0.00
West Devon 0 0.00
Forest of Dean 0 0.00

Some sort of localised restriction in Swindon may be justified, but that, as things currently stand, really is it for the South West.

Case numbers in the South West have increased as compared to a few weeks ago, but as the list above indicates it is from a really, really low level to a really low level. That said no excuse for complacency.

Staplemaple · 01/08/2020 11:14

The south west also covers Swindon, which has had some significant outbreaks which the council has said is community transition

Yes I really don't get why they haven't locked Swindon down again.

Itisasecret · 01/08/2020 11:23

Swindon is a weird one. There are a lot of commuters to London. Equally it’s close Bristol and Bath and there is a lot of commuting there. There will be a lockdown coming to the south west if Swindon carries on (it is in the south west, that’s a fact) it’s just how far it will extend. The M4 is also the commuter corridor and tourism corridor down to Devon and Cornwall before it branches off. People have Swindon postcodes but don’t actually live in Swindon and come under another council, sorting office, postal town. It could be like Manchester, where the lockdown covers a huge area, almost to Bath.

Castiel07 · 01/08/2020 11:24

Its all in work places! Like I said before I dont know where they are getting 'community transmission'.
A lot of the people that have coronavirus atm is in an Iceland distribution centre.

Pericombobulations · 01/08/2020 11:24

@Janleverton

So this was yesterday at about 11am. I do realise though that fridays and Saturdays tend to be changeover days so perhaps that was a factor. Second photo is from Monday I think. Back of beach busier because people seem terrified of wet sand. Grin
My favourite beach! People have always crowded the top of that beach and yet the rest of it it always pretty empty.

Back to the point of this thread, we cancelled our trip down to Cornwall at the end of lockdown because I was worried SD and mask wearing would be limited and the webcams and photos generally prove I was right. I am desperate to be on that beach but will wait until hopefully next year when things are slightly more normal hopefully!

shinynewapple2020 · 01/08/2020 11:24

@Bluewavescrashing

FFS!

We've booked a self catering cottage in Cornwall next week. Middle of nowhere but on the coast on a tiny rocky beach. It's what we've been looking forward to. Tesco delivery booked and we're jot interested in shops or restaurants while we're there, or busy beaches, just a change of scene and nice walks. If we can't go I'll cry. 2 foreign holidays cancelled this year already. 😢

I totally get your point about holidaying in a safe way, not spreading virus etc but if you can safely access local businesses when you are away this gives them a needed cash boost.

Itisasecret · 01/08/2020 11:26

Yeah I know that, but those people have also been out an about in the community as well. It’s a bit weird that the SW councils are insisting it’s actually community transmission. Considering Manchester has been locked down for not much more.

boys3 · 01/08/2020 11:26

just to add Swindon accounts for over 31% of total cases in the SW for that week, but just 4% of the SW population.

Marylou62 · 01/08/2020 11:29

But it's not just sitting on the beach is it? You've got to actually get there.. After parking, walk through the streets, stop and shop for supplies, meat, bbq, booze. Chips etc etc then actually try and get on the beach.. The bottleneck to cross the bridge, through everyone else to a quiet spot... And I've never said they were all holiday makers.. People who live in Cornwall come to the beaches...

4cats2kids · 01/08/2020 11:29

I’m in Cornwall. My suspicion is that we will be locked down after summer once the tourist industry has made it’s money. I’m not buying uniform until the last minute because I strongly suspect this will be the case.

Lindy2 · 01/08/2020 11:32

Just my thought. If someone on holiday catches Coronavirus because of going on crowded beaches and not social distancing etc I don't think the majority are likely to get a positive test result whilst still actually on holiday are they?

Symptoms generally only show after 5 - 14 days. Many will be back at home before they get tested and get their results.

The cases for each area must, on the whole, be from locals who are resident in those areas. Who also probably aren't social distancing to have been exposed.

Marylou62 · 01/08/2020 11:33

Then like yesterday the weather turned cloudy and it started to rain... Hundreds packed and left at the same time.. In reverse.. Ice creams, chips... Madness in a global pandemic...

shallpoetwake · 01/08/2020 11:34
@blurpityblurp they’re on Scilly (Tesco )

Well his father does own the islands
I didn't realise the Tesco monopoly had spread so far as to take over whole islands.

Runbitchrun · 01/08/2020 11:39

I’m glad one poster has pointed out that ‘the north west’ isn’t locked down. Plenty of people keen to emphasise that ‘the south west’ is a vast area but not seeing the hypocrisy in that statement.

Three specific areas have been locked down (and actually, to call it that is taking the piss - they can still go the pub, just not see friends or family) - Greater Manchester, East Lancs and part of West Yorkshire.

cologne4711 · 01/08/2020 11:42

Cornwall is naice people’s summer playground

nothing to do with being "naice" (although half the population of my "naice" town go there in the summer - in normal times). I just don't get it myself - why would you want to go somewhere that is always so busy?

I do hope the tourists are remembering there's a virus around though - when I visited my mum a few weeks ago people in Dartmouth in Devon definitely were not!

cologne4711 · 01/08/2020 11:43

The cases for each area must, on the whole, be from locals who are resident in those areas. Who also probably aren't social distancing to have been exposed

Yes. And I really think the chances of getting it outside are very slim. People are catching it by insisting on having sleepovers and the like inside, and going into pubs and breaking the rules on going up to, and hanging around, the bar.

Malbecfan · 01/08/2020 11:48

I live in E Devon. I have just been to collect a prescription for my father in the nearest small town. I teach at the primary school there so I know most of the local 4 - 11 yo children. The high street was rammed with families, none of whom I recognised. Lots of them were blundering past people, rather than waiting for a gap and keeping a distance. The mainly elderly locals were moaning about having to wear their face-coverings, and lots of them just had them over their mouths.

I challenged one woman who pushed past me, who then got very arsey, claiming to be a local when I challenged her. My DD and I were wondering why a "local" needed the public toilets if she lived in the town and had such a strong Midlands accent. My accent is not local but I have lived in my hamlet for 14 years and in the SW for 22.

I don't mind visitors coming as long as they are respectful and polite. They need to keep their distance EVERYWHERE, whether on the beach, in the town or the supermarket. Oh and they also need to learn to navigate our narrow lanes, and learn where reverse gear is...

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/08/2020 11:53

mateysmum

I think we live in the same place.

Littlemissdaredevil · 01/08/2020 11:54

The South West covers a massive area including Gloucestershire and Wiltshire!

Cases have been very low in Devon and Cornwall. It was reported that cases have risen in Cornwall last week. There were 41 cases in across Devon and Cornwall last week. However, there are 1.1 million people in Devon and 550,000 in Cornwall.

Cases in Cornwall almost have doubled from 10 to 19. Cases in Torbay have gone up from 3 to 5. The number of cases in Plymouth is the same. The number cases in Devon (minus Torbay and Plymouth) has dropped from 15 to 12.

Whilst the number of cases in Cornwall has almost doubled in the past week we are still talking about a very small number of cases

Jaxhog · 01/08/2020 11:55

Surely sitting on a beach is low risk?

Yes, but people aren't only doing that are they. They're using loos, shops, cafes, etc.

LadyCatStark · 01/08/2020 11:55

It won’t because it’s the playground for the white, southern middle classes. Wigan had 2, yes 2, cases last week and it’s part of the northern lockdown. Make of that what you will.

babybythesea · 01/08/2020 11:57

Yeti. You will be more than welcome as long as you don’t assume that just because you are on holiday you don’t need to follow any safety precautions. Keep going with precautions that you are (hopefully) following at home and it will be lovely.
Ignore all precautions because you want to get away from all the virus stuff and people will get annoyed.
I’ve encountered a few people who are doing the latter over the last week or so and I’d like them to go home. The woman who pushed past me yesterday to get into a shop (I was waiting outside because they had the maximum number of customers in there) because she was ‘just wanting to have a nice time on holiday’, for example, she can go home. After she’s been politely but firmly removed from the shop, that is...

m0therofdragons · 01/08/2020 12:14

We’re in the SW and this week we’ve been to the beach (45 minute drive) washed hands and used hand gel after toilets, hand gel before eating, spaced out from others (everyone doing the same), wore a mask in the cafe getting ice creams. Yesterday we went to a zoo - followed all rules and felt very safe. We’ve eaten out 3 times this month. We don’t usually eat out so much but both have secure jobs and want to support the local economy.

I also get the daily situation report (sitrep) from our local hospital and we’ve not had any COVID admissions in 4 weeks so a lock down here would be bonkers. The R rate is all about numbers going up so 2 cases turning to 4 suddenly shoots the R up as cases have doubled. A place with 1000 cases increasing by 100 would have a lower R than 2 increasing to 4 so cannot be used as a stat on its own.
