Antisemitism online

Isn't there something we can do? I remember a post on here, years ago, by a mum who was very frightened and her post stood out to me.

It isn't right that the Jewish community have to defend themselves alone here - can't we do something to show support and let people know they are not alone in this?

Hey OP, what do you mean by “here” - Mumsnet? The internet/social media generally?

I’m Jewish. I call out anti-semitism and racism generally as I encounter it. I’m not sure what else anyone can do.

serenada · 29/07/2020 15:40

Yes, Mumsnet but what we can do individually, I suppose. I call it out too (some of my family are Jewish) but it seems like it is escalating with the Wiley thing.

Just leaves me feeling that there should be more that we can do. There was no place for it when I was growing up in London and I am shocked at the rise of it (off and online).

I think there is something we have to do as a society - where we speak more consistently and publically across communities and put the focus on commonality, not difference.

I agree on that, there is so much focus on diversity that it implies that different groups of humans are very different, to an extent that 19th century anthropologists would wholeheartedly agree.

The woke brigade seem not to realise that by celebrating and promoting diversity and differences between cultures they are actually a lot closer to the views of racists than they would contemplate (if they could pull their heads out of their own arses, of course).

serenada · 29/07/2020 17:00

@contrmary

Yes

I think it's sad that apparently this topic is so unimportant that it goes to page 2 so quickly. If it was any other form of racism there would be loads of replies. Depressing.

SheepandCow · 29/07/2020 18:13

Agree with everyone here. It does seem too often that's it's downplayed or dismissed.

I've reported a couple of posts here and they were taken down. A few years ago I reported a blatantly anti-Semitic post on twitter. Nothing was done.

serenada · 29/07/2020 18:18

@mummaries

I have been refreshing the page, wondering where everyone is. There is something bizarre about the complete radio silence in general regarding the escalation of anti semitism. I know that many Jewish people have spoken out but I would have thought we would have a more vocal, across the board condemnation of AS.

I hope the Jewish people on here feel some support from wider society.

Yabu.

BigWholeBean · 29/07/2020 18:22

As a Jew, I’ve been unsurprised by the lack of posting and condemnation.

SheepandCow · 29/07/2020 18:23

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Yabu.
Why?
Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/07/2020 18:30

It's not an aibu question is it?

Crankley · 29/07/2020 18:40

I know there have been threads about anti-semitism in the Labour Party but I can't recall any anti-semitic threads on MN - can you link to some?

BusyDreaming · 29/07/2020 18:41

I would urge people to listen to the Emma Barnett show on Radio 5 Live, yesterday at 10 am when she calls out Wiley for his rampant anti semitism on his Twitter rant.
Powerful stuff.

serenada · 29/07/2020 18:42

@Chicchicchicchiclana

I guess not but do you think that is the real reason why there are so few responses? Perhaps I could have worded it better.

@BigWholeBean

That's a sad truth to hear.

I was called a Jew by someone last year in a conversation we were having about education, I think? I don't understand what is going on but Jew/Judaism used in this way seems to be a metaphor for a certain way of thinking - what that actually is I don't quite know.

3/10 voters for YABU

RuggerHug · 29/07/2020 18:45

Aside from calling it out if I see it and reporting tweets I don't know what I can do but it's disgusting anyone thinking antisemitism is ok or not a big deal.

mummaries · 29/07/2020 18:52

@serenada

3/10 voters for YABU
Probably Corbyn fans.
coronabeer23 · 29/07/2020 18:53

I think the general public are pretty indifferent to anti Semitism and to Jewish people. Much of the country has no or a very Tiny Jewish community and vast swathes of the country have never met anyone Jewish. They also see Jewish and Israel as interchangeable. It doesn’t affect their lives or the lives of their friends so they can’t see the fuss. It’s not a sexy bandwagon to jump on so they just scroll on. That’s the shame and the lack of interest on MN shows this

RachelLyg · 29/07/2020 18:57

I call it out whenever I see it.

There was a thread on here last week where some posters had to be informed that attempting to minimise the holocaust is not acceptable. The posts weren’t removed.

serenada · 29/07/2020 18:57

I met a woman who told me that at her child's school in London they had to have extra security. This woman was petrified something would happen during the day. That is not acceptable and is a national issue as those schoolchildren have a right to attend school without feeling threatened - and I don't know what kind of school it was but it is crazy that in the UK, we have that situation for what is a small percentage of the population. We don't, to my knowledge, have that need for security for any other group.

OP posts:
Andante57 · 29/07/2020 18:59

I agree, op, it’s shocking.
Why aren’t anti semites “cancelled’?

serenada · 29/07/2020 19:05

@Andante57

I am sure that in the past they would have been. I can't think of any situation growing up where, if someone had said something anti-semitic they wouldn't have been strongly condemned and most people would have been shocked. It just wasn't acceptable in London. Neither was it in the air as an unsaid thing - I just don't think anyone of my generation thought it.

OP posts:
BusyDreaming · 29/07/2020 19:05

We have numerous Guardian reading friends and family who are never done posting positive BLM and pro trans comments but are very quiet on anti semitism.
They view being Jewish and Israel as interchangeable.
They are vehemently anti Israel while expressing zero interest in finding out anything about it from people who have actually been.
It’s really made me reassess my relationship with these people and I’ve been genuinely shocked at the degree of anti Semitism in this country.
My DC have also been disappointed by the lack of support for Jewish students at university.

Ihaveoflate · 29/07/2020 19:10

It's so nice to see this thread. I am Jewish and tbh you just get used to rampant casual anti-Semitism and try and ignore it. I do worry about what to say to my child when she's older about how to handle hearing/reading/seeing anti-Semitic stuff. I don't want to retreat into the ghetto, but I do feel increasingly that I am more comfortable in Jewish company.

serenada · 29/07/2020 19:11

@BusyDreaming

I cannot understand how we have allowed such uncritical and sloppy thinking out into society. We did have this to an extent (and I have seen it return ) with Ireland/Irish people and the bombs in the UK in the 80s. Comments were certainly being made but nothing to the extent of AS and the verbal attack on individuals who are Jewish. This conflation with 'country over there' and 'identity based on here' seems to be about dismantling peoples sense of themselves. We don't undermine anyone else this way.
