To go for a run at 5 am?

I've just returned from Spain so have been told to quarantine.
WIBU to go for an early morning run when noone will be about?

OP posts:

I am often out that time or earlier. If I saw you and knew you were supposed to be quarantined, I would not hesitate to photograph you and take the photo to the police

mosquitofeast · 29/07/2020 11:54

@LittleMissBrainy

Ok, this might seem like a stupid question but even in the height of lockdown you could still get your daily exercise, you just had to follow the rules and not go within 2m of anyone. Why is quarantine any different?
not if you were self isolating, you couldn't

Who would probably do nothing.

OP, I think if you were careful it would be fine.

who would probably do nothing

who are fining people and taking them to court.

The fine is unlimited, OP, with a minimum of £1000, and a record which would need to be declared to every person who you ever apply to for employment or any sort of financial agreement, for the next 10 years

bibbitybobbitycats · 29/07/2020 12:06

Does anyone know whether having to quarantine when you get back from Spain is law or simply guidance?

Yes thay CAN, but they are not. Police have only fined one person in the last four months.

well, it is enforced with unlimited fines and court, so the exact definition is a bit irrelevant. Of course, you can get fined and taken to court without actually having broken the law, I believe. I am not sure about that, though, and can't think of anything off the top of my head. Not paying council tax maybe? TV license? happy to be corrected.
FlamingoAndJohn · 29/07/2020 12:10

I run. I feel your pain.
Right at the beginning of lockdown I had a dreadful cough, not Covid. I didn’t run outside for two weeks. I normally go at 6am and see no one but it simply wasn’t worth the risk. I knew I was fine but I didn’t want to risk others. I did online work outs for two weeks instead.

The road I live on is currently being dug up at one end. The other end of the road has a sign up saying road closed. There are a huge number of cars driving down my road because the rules don’t apply to them, realising that the road really is closed and having to turn back.
I hate this ‘rules are for other people’ mindset.

I don't know about the last 4 months, I do know of 4 in the last 2 days

bibbitybobbitycats · 29/07/2020 12:13

Also, if you are quarantining you are allowed out to get essential supplies if there is no other alternative. Which is a lot riskier than going for a run. As usual, the rules make little sense.

TheOrigBrave · 29/07/2020 12:13

I'd go really, really late.

Oh, fair enough. Do you have a link?
cologne4711 · 29/07/2020 12:18

If it's mainland Spain you have to stay at home. I run myself and I completely see the temptation of going out.

I still don't see why it has to be 14 days. It would make so much more sense to have a short quarantine of say 5 days, then test, tell you to stay at home until it proves negative and then you can go out so it would be 7 days at most, probably. We can all survive no running for one week :) Hopefully we will get this amazing saliva test and it will make everything much easier.

MaggieFS · 29/07/2020 12:23

You might have been in a small village with no cases, but presumably you came back on a plane... two hours in a confined space with goodness knows who? Good call for staying at home, thank you.

I think the incubation period is believed to be longer than five days, so you could be tested then and be negative but still go on to develop it? (I'm not 100% sure though, but that's my understanding why it needs to be 14 days)
burdog · 29/07/2020 12:26

Stay in your house, for God's sake. It's two weeks not two years. Do an online HIIT workout if you want exercise.

malmi · 29/07/2020 12:33

This is the problem with expecting people to voluntarily quarantine. People who are going on holidays during a pandemic are not the ones who care about what's best for society.

81Byerley · 29/07/2020 12:38

It's only 14 days, your legs won't drop off if you do as you're meant to, and stay at home. You may have been in a small village with no cases....but I presume you had to go in an aeroplane and an airport???

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/07/2020 12:46

Hang on.... Several posts saying what if the OP has an accident and then someone has to help her.... Heaven forbid... What if she falls down her stairs at home? Are those in quarantine also expected to just lie in a heap at the bottom for 2 weeks praying for flood just so they can drink some water whilst they wait for quarantine to be over so they can call for help?

It’s about the OP not putting herself or others at unnecessary risk by going out for a run. If she fell down the stairs or had a genuine accident at home then of course she should receive the relevant help.

....relevant help delivered by trained worker with PPE hopefully. Not a neighbour/stranger who hasn’t signed up for the risk.

Riojasmoothy · 29/07/2020 12:57

Oh it's all so bloody dramatic! Go for a run, just don't stop to chat to anyone.
I have never known such hysteria in my life! Covid-19 has really brought out the best and the worst in people. All these nosy neighbours so excited at the opportunity of dobbing someone in Hmm

Alloverthegrapevine · 29/07/2020 12:58

It depends if we're in the follow the rules stage or the common sense stage.

Of course no you can't, OTOH, really where is the risk?

Yes, generally speaking a worldwide pandemic is pretty dramatic. Hmm
Alloverthegrapevine · 29/07/2020 13:00

I've been out for a run practically every day for the last 15 years and never needed any help from anyone. Statistically it may be "a" risk but it's a tiny one.

thesedaysarescary · 29/07/2020 13:05

OMG people seriously? Just do what your told and stay in your home for 2 weeks then do whatever you want after! Regardless if you run at midday or midnight it's wrong! All the posters saying you can't see a problem with it how would you feel if they were asking if it was ok to pop to the shops or pop to visit a friend or take their kids to the park? I hate that so many people through this pandemic are looking for justification to do whatever they want instead of just doing what is required of them. 😡

TheOrigBrave · 29/07/2020 13:06

Same (ish). I don't go every day, but I've been running for about 35 year (dear God!). In all that time I have never needed help. I've fallen and injured myself, but managed to get home.

However, in my car I have needed help very many time. I understand that if you are self-isolating you can't leave your home at all, so this is a moot point, I'm just trying to put some perspective on how risky running is.
