Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

@Jeaniealogy

I’m intrigued as it makes no sense to send out a cake like that especially as a well known person. Even before I started making my own I would order from the local at home starting out baker and it was much better than that!

I think we can safely say it’s no Mitch turner!

OP, send her the 'side by side' that you posted here.

And maybe email along the lines of:

Dear Ms Cake

As a loyal customer, I'm really surprised that you have dismissed my disappointment at the cake I collected on XXXX. We have always been delighted with your cakes, but I am attaching a side by side comparison of what I asked for versus what I received. The colour is pretty awful, the proportions are off (the height of the original makes it elegant in a way that has been lost on the cake you made) and the finish is nowhere near your usual standard - all in all it looks pretty amateur and is not of the standard I paid for and was expecting.

I hope that looking at the image I sent you side by side with the cake you made, you might agree that the cake isn't up to scratch and consider further discussions about how we can square this off.

Best wishes
OP

@forfoxsakee

She is quite well known in the cake world, has written a book, made cakes for celebrities, used to have a shop on a trendy street in town. I'm not lying about her being a professional without outing her!
Jane Asher????

Thanks to whoever made the side by side, I will definitely use this.

Dear Mrs Cake, please see attached a picture of the original cake I asked for and that you agreed to provide. I also attach a picture of the cake that arrived, in case you can't remember it.
I'm sure that you will agree that they bear little resemblance to each other. I had hoped that you would recognise that I have tried to be kind by saying that I was disappointed and would have offered a reasonable solution. The fact is however that this cake is not up to your usual standard and not what I ordered. Therefore I would like you to arrange to collect it and give me a full refund.

Intelinside57 · 26/07/2020 19:15

If it's been eaten then tell her you're willing for her to retain the cost of ingredients.
It's absolute rubbish, shame you accepted it at all really.

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 19:17

It had to be used as we had a meal booked in a special restaurant last night as a celebration so I know realistically I can't expect a full refund. I would be happy with a refund minus the cost of the ingredients it cost her to make it or an offer of another cake.

My daughter collected it as I don't drive and she was running errands on that side of town. I can't blame her as she wasn't to know that it wasn't supposed to look like that or how much it had cost.

OP posts:
forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 19:21

As I had had cakes from her before I didn't see reason to tell her to double check it or make sure it was perfect before accepting.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/07/2020 19:26

What did it taste like?

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 19:26

It tasted fine.

Crystal87 · 26/07/2020 19:27

It looks ok, though nowhere near as professional and neat as the one you wanted. I'm not a cake expert but I'd say that's worth no more than £45.

fairlyplump · 26/07/2020 19:29

I would demand my money back, sorry but its rubbish

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 19:31

How many layers were in it, op? I'm betting not as many as there would have been in the tall version?

Funguy · 26/07/2020 19:32

I am obv. not a cake officionado because it looks fine to me.

Staplemaple · 26/07/2020 19:34

It looks awful, but I suppose where it's been picked up now and eaten not sure what can be done. Worth contacting them though and sending some feedback, you might get a bit back.

Jeaniealogy · 26/07/2020 19:34

Please don't say it was Peggy Porschen ? ?

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/07/2020 19:37
@Thisismytimetoshine

I think daisy is thinking about a naked cake which is supposed to look unfinished but clearly the OPs cake isn’t meant to be that..lol
I've just googled naked cakes. Jesus, someone's pulled a blinder making that shit a thing Shock
Talk about the emperor's new clothes...

"That finish is really crap"
"Oh no, dear, haven't you heard? It's called the naked look, everybody's going mad for it". And millions of gobshites immediately jump on board and make it a thing. 😂

forfoxsakee · 26/07/2020 19:44

She hasn't replied to my second message so I will give it until tomorrow to leave a review.

Putting aside it’s not a tall cake as per the photo you sent and the lettering is wonky are you sure the cake didn’t get knocked around or a bag knocked the sides etc Whilst in the car hence the buttercream looking messy? Although from your updates it doesn’t appear that the maker was shocked by the state of it by saying “that’s not how I sent it out”

Alloverthegrapevine · 26/07/2020 19:46

OMG, I've been making naked cakes for 4 decades, because I have the artistic talent of a slug, I can make a lovely cake but ruin it with any attempt to decorate it who knew I was such a trend setter?

Oh god the side by side shows how awful it is! I feel bad for you OP that must be so disappointing and she is taking the absolute piss! I hope you get your money back 😬

mccavitythethird · 26/07/2020 19:49

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I'd be disappointed in paying for that. That's 'enthusiastic parent' rather than selling level.
^ This.

Has she got an apprentice in who did the cake for her?
