Would you be happy with the finding of this cake for £80

I ordered a graduation cake from a lady who I have used for years and all of the cakes have been beautiful which is why I've returned every time. However I picked up this yesterday and I'm a little disappointed in the size and finish compared to the picture I sent of how I would like it. I've messaged her to tell her I was a little disappointed with it but she hasn't replied so am I being unreasonable? She wasn't in when I picked it up she left it with her teen son to hand over so couldn't really say anything there and then.

@Consideredopinion

Come back op.

Maybe she's just changing the odd detail, I do that all the time to preserve anonymity

Me too. I’ll often say Change Dd/Ds or other little things to make myself less identifiable, lots of posters do. Doesn’t make you dogdgy.
kittenpeak · 26/07/2020 22:47

If she saw the picture you wanted, and wasn't able to create it for you, she should have said. By giving you that (I'm guessing she didn't say "no I can't do the picture) then rightly, you will expect the picture.

Where in the country are you from? I'm not an expert, but I don't think £45 (what others have suggested) is fair - I would have paid £60 for what she made, but I still wouldn't have been happy because it's different to the picture, and by accepting the job and not saying she couldn't do the picture makes you think you'll get the picture. Having said that, I wouldn't expect to pay £80 for that cake in the photo either. I would have paid 100-£120.

I'm from an expensive/rip off end of the country and have paid £60 for a cake of the standard of the one requested, in fact I think it was better than that. The one received, pfft, I would begrudge even paying the suggested £45 for.
MsEllany · 27/07/2020 01:09

No idea about pricing but saying the colour is ‘awful’ is a bit much. It’s shorter and the finish isn’t great, a pro shouldn’t have had trouble with buttercream. It looks like she outsourced it to someone who didn’t have tins the right size.

Scrubsmum · 27/07/2020 01:11

I think it's the size of the numbers that make it so unprofessional. If she removed the numbers and made them like your photo it would be better

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 01:13

But the colour is awful. It's nothing like the colour in the suggested photo. Very gaudy.

3cats · 27/07/2020 01:42

Yes, I remember the Frozen cake troll. She posted a photo of a badly-made cake and asked if she had been ripped off by the cake maker. At the end it got kind of weird and the Op finally admitted that she was a troll and had made the cake herself.

Alwaysinpain · 27/07/2020 02:07

@EmmaJR1

The lady I use for cakes is excellent. This is what you get for £80 - hopefully the photo will attach

The one you have pictured is not an £80 cake!

Oh my goodness that's absolutely gorgeous! I've saved the image to replicate for my DD if that's ok? I love it!
BadLad · 27/07/2020 03:05

It looks about as good as the cake Hagrid made and then sat on in Harry Potter.

The icing on your picture and the actual cake look like different types of icing - maybe she ran out of the icing in the picture.

FunTimes2020 · 27/07/2020 07:58

@paddingtonbearsmarmalade

I hobby-bake and my finish is better than that Confused if you’ve used her loads I’d probably think it’s a one off but think you’re right to say something to her. It’s possible (unlikely but you never know) that the son messed about with it after she left which affected the finish?
That's an odd train of thought. I know loads of teens, including mine and wouldn't imagine any of them defacing a cake!
TonytheDog · 27/07/2020 08:02

It's a shit cake, my dog could probably do better (I couldn't because I'm as good at baking as I am at badminton).

The driving/not driving, kids/no kids is confusing. Did you make the cake for someone and they have complained?

Curious and curiouser

GabsAlot · 27/07/2020 12:50

have you had anymore response yet op?

MsEllany · 27/07/2020 15:08

@Thisismytimetoshine that’s an opinion. Not fact.

Yes, that's true.

Thisismytimetoshine · 27/07/2020 15:13

It is massively different to the one in op's picture, though. So unless she asked for it to be several shades darker, it's still wrong.

PablosHoney · 27/07/2020 15:13

I’d say that if I wanted it rubbish I’d have made it myself

Funnyface1 · 27/07/2020 20:04

What the hell happened with this thread?!

Treatedlikeamaid · 27/07/2020 20:11

Nope! Awful! Numbers too big. Congrats has changed. Stupid little flowers. Awful icing.mwrong shade. Gold on numbers looks mottled and tatty. Hat too big. No trail of white flowers. Nothing like photo, which was agreed design. Trade descriptions act.
