To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

It's the assumption that all long-haired women are straight that annoys me. Not all of us are, not all of us want to attract men.

PhilSwagielka · 21/07/2020 12:20

Also, short hair makes you look like a man hater? Jesus Christ, is this the '50s or something? I don't particularly like men as a whole and my hair is boob length.

roundandsideways · 21/07/2020 12:21

@Kalifa

Most women have shit hair yet they grow it. Some of them have very thin hair and a couple of strands just hang around their face yet they insist on having it long. Yes, they keep it for male attention, but they say it’s for themselves. Pathetic.
You sound very much like my ex husband. He also thought women grew their nails, or dressed nicely just to attract men, yet they object to men giving them attention. Took me a while to realise he just hated all women

@RufustheRowlingReindeer

Mine

Hopefully

How often to you need to cut it? I did have short styles in the late 70s but they lost any shape after a couple of weeks. I am not skilled in doing my own hair.
RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 12:32

The style will keep for about 8 weeks

That hair length is probably about 3/4 weeks, i like to get it cut every 4 weeks 😀

BUT...and its a big but

The hairdresser comes to our house and does dh , me and ds2 for £10 each...

I don’t dye it or condition or brush or straighten it...so the only other cost is the wax i prefer

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 12:33

I was trying to check out my neck in the photo 😀 so im at a bit of a weird angle

NoWordForFluffy · 21/07/2020 12:38

@Ilovegreentomatoes

I feel far more feminine with my short bob than I do with my long fine limp hair.Everyones different.
Yep, me too. And I've been looking at going shorter too. I have a photo to show my hairdresser to see what she thinks.
ravensoaponarope · 21/07/2020 12:38

well, I probably did in my teens.
I have very short hair now. In my opinion, it really suits me.
Mind you, I guess I'm not that interested in appearing attractive to men these days, but I imagine that, like all of us, different men are attracted to different things.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 21/07/2020 12:40

Rufus I love it! But more importantly, you do and that's the main thing.

Chista · 21/07/2020 12:42

I dont really care what men think, for me, my long (and I mean extremely long) hair is a part of my identity as a Sikh. Cutting it would be devastating for me. Although I can tell you that a lot of my friends who had long hair before they were married, cut it short as soon as they could after getting married

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 12:45

It is comeon

I do love my hair 😀

Oh and the compliments i get...from random women in the street or when i worked

DarkmilkAddict · 21/07/2020 12:45

I've always had long hair to look more attractive - or more accurately, less unattractive (still paranoid from my teenage ugly duckling years).

So not for "men" specifically, but the world in general.

Ideally, I'd be considered average (or above) in general, and only very attractive to men who I'm also attracted to.

Who seriously wants to be attractive to men they're not attracted to themselves? Surely that's just pointless or even dangerous? (thinking back to all the unwanted attention I got in my 20s and 30s, some of which got nasty)

Bloops · 21/07/2020 12:48

No. I think I look more attractive with longer hair. I couldnt give a damn what the opposite sex think :) i'd love to be able to have short hair but it just looks silly on me, imo.

ScrambledSmegs · 21/07/2020 12:52

This woman doesn't like having her head touched by other people but doesn't dare cut her own hair after a disastrous effort in her early 20's at a home 'Rachel' cut shows age

So I keep my hair below shoulder length as it's easier to tie up/back and it doesn't look so obvious that it's grown out. I get a haircut maybe twice a year. We joke that I want to make sure I'm getting my money's worth.

ChangeThePassword · 21/07/2020 13:12

Getting a hair cut every eight weeks is high maintenance contrasted to my current hair care regime - and that's not including the fact that when I have short hair I have to wash it more often.

I would alsodeal with it every morning because it sticks up at odd angles. It doesn't do that long. But even without that, even if it was just the regular hair cuts and washing more frequently, that, to me, would be high maintenance.

ChangeThePassword · 21/07/2020 13:13

Like the women who say they tie their hair back everyday but would never have it short

Why is that an issue? For some of us, short hair is more more hassle than long hair tied back.

BakedBlossoms · 21/07/2020 13:14

I had short hair my entire life up until 2 years ago and honestly I'll never go back. I find my long hair WAY lower maintenance.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 13:15

Absolutely change

Personally i prefer 5 minutes a day and 20 minutes once a month to infrequent haircuts but in my case...and my case only, more faffing on a daily basis

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 13:18

Although i find it interesting that In men A short back and side’s doesn’t seem to be high maintenance

Having said that lots of men would probably prefer long har

I know dh would , but his grows out not down 😀

ChangeThePassword · 21/07/2020 13:18

If I was worried about what men think about my hair, I would have taken seriously the man who asked me if I had thought about dying my hair as I would look better, instead of laughing and asking if he'd thought about dying his.

His wife was initially mortified, then when I responded, she laughed and said he'd tried it and it looked awful 😂

amusedbush · 21/07/2020 13:20

I've had my hair various lengths over the years but I prefer it long, it's just easier to deal with. I have thick curly hair that I prefer to wear straight/style into loose waves with a tong so if I cut it above my shoulders I can't tie it up, so it needs to be washed, dried and styled pretty much every day. Keeping it long means I can wash it twice a week thanks to dry shampoo and a messy bun.

My chin length bob needs a trim every six weeks but is virtually zero maintenance on a day to day basis - wash and blow dry once a week, comb and go every other day.

I did wonder about this. But... DH cuts his hair much more often than I do. His sticks straight up whatever he does so yeah doesn't need styling - male colleagues with hair like mine seem to use gel or something, which I don't need to. Laziest about grooming male colleague also has long hair. It's been a pattern since college that the scruffiest, least appearance focussed men in my peer group have been the long haired ones. So... not convinced. Men are under social pressure to conform too.

A chin length bob looks awful on me. I need to go properly short (which needs attention daily) or shoulder length or longer (which is wash and go, and cut every year or so). I do admit that bobs are reasonable as far as maintenance goes, generally speaking, but I've been there done that and it looks shocking on me

thirdfiddle · 21/07/2020 13:59

It so depends on your hair and your lifestyle doesn't it. I went sailing once with a chin length bob. Omg the amount of time it took to unknot my hair afterwards! Plait would have been far better. Or short short obviously. The need for frequent maintenance and resulting little itchy bits of hair puts me off short short. DH's trimmings are bad enough, he showers straight after but they still end up everywhere. I did short short when kids were tiny and kept pulling my hair.
