To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

I've had a 1920s style short bob for the last 20 years and I love it. It suits my thick hair and my bone structure and if I have it any longer, I start to resemble Henry the 7th! I've also never once been mistaken for a man.

Galvantula · 21/07/2020 11:32

Aye but if you were paying attention, a lot of us said we'd have shorter hairstyles but dislike frequent hairdressers visits. So long hair tied back is lower maintenance.

As long as my hair is clean and out the way, it's not something I worry about tbh!

lifeafter50 · 21/07/2020 11:43

I have long hair because it is easier to deal and more flexible than short hair -short hair is high maintenance.

MrsKoala · 21/07/2020 11:45

Short hair makes a lot of women look like man haters

Even if long hair was to attract men and short hair to not attract them, is that the same as hating them? Is not wanting sex with someone the same as hating them? Sadly I think a lot of people subconsciously think women owe men desirability and feel quite indignant when they feel they aren’t getting what they deserve.

There was a pp who mentioned when a woman has long hair and you see them from behind then they turn and they are older than you expected (or reading between the lines less attractive than you want them to be because they are old). Which I think is pretty much the same as expecting women to be decorative and if they can’t be then they should be functional and invisible.

Short hair is not high maintenance

Some hairstyles are definitely high maintenance

MrsKoala · 21/07/2020 11:51

For all of you who believe short hair doesn't suit you, but enjoy the ease of being able to tie long hair back, doesn't that, in effect, render your hair 'short' with respect to how it makes your face look?

No, as said upthread, I scrape it tight on the side reducing width on my round/oval face and have a large messy bun on the top of my head creating height because I have a small forehead. I cannot think of any short styles high would do that to my face. Apart from a 1960s bouffant.

NameChange84 · 21/07/2020 11:53

FFS No one is saying if you have a bob you might get mistaken for a man or even if you have short hair you might be mistaken for a man.

But a pp indicated it wasn’t possible for a short haired woman to ever be misidentified as a man when some posters said they didn’t have typically feminine facial or body features and would look like a man with short hair. But I’ll hold my hands up and say I’ve misgendered women like these when in a toilet or changing room. Yes, dress plays a part of it but so does the hairstyles they’ve chosen.

I’m a short haired woman btw. Or at least I was pre lockdown.

If I had short hair I would have to go to the hairdressers every 3 or 4 weeks which would be very expensive and time consuming. My hair gets washed and conditioned, maybe a trim once a year. I don't enjoy going to the hairdressers and put it off as long as possible. I colour it myself.
Coughsyrupsucks · 21/07/2020 11:58

If I have short hair now (48 and 4 stone over weight) I look like a short, fat, tiny headed woman. I tried it, looked awful grown it out again. But when I was young and skinny a pixie cut looked amazing, was very disappointed to discover how bad it looked now Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/07/2020 12:03

My hair. It looks a bit lighter on top but that's the sun shining on it - I never let the grey get more than 1cm.

😁 Preferable to a fake smile. I don't like posing for photos.

Galvantula · 21/07/2020 12:09

@RufustheRowlingReindeer

Sorry Blush

My definition of low maintenance is getting a hair cut about twice a year.

What type of short but low maintenance style would you recommend?

I don't love having long hair, I just like not having to do anything at all to it. Blush I've not even had a fringe for about 25 years...

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 12:09

Mine

Hopefully

Why do women so vehemently deny they're bothered about what the opposite sex thinks of their appearance as though it's some sign of weakness or something to be of ashamed of? It's such a non issue

Well OP accused them of having long hair to attract the opposite sex, so you're bound to get people posting to say that's not the reason they have long hair.

I know people with long hair who dye, highlight, straighten, trim, treat and generally make a fuss about it. That sort of long hair is high maintenance.

I have long hair because I cba to have it cut often enough to keep it short and do none of the above. My hair is of a type where three swipes of a hairbrush and a ponytail band has it looking neat for the day when long. When short it requires a lot more attention to keep it smart enough for work. So yeah, pure laziness.

I'd actively rather not be attractive to the other sex in general, I'm old enough to think it only causes annoyance in anyone other than my spouse who couldn't give a damn what my hair does.
