To feel annoyed at school motto

WeasleyWoman · 14/07/2020 15:23

DS's primary school is CofE state mainstream. Its official motto is love hope forgiveness or similar which is great but on all letters they now say. Learning for Life: Ready to take our place in God's World.
I guess this shouldn't matter but it pisses me off. Why is it his world? Why not our world? The children's world? It might as well say Learning for life: ready to bow to the patriarchy and conform.

I wish i had the time, emotional energy, and space to worry about semantics.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2020 15:27

Well they clearly believe God created the world, so that's why?

I'm not a bit religious but even I can see that.

formerbabe · 14/07/2020 15:27

Its a religious school. What did you expect?

I also have no idea what your comment about the patriarchy means?

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2020 15:29

Learning for life: Ready to take our place in Doris from number 32's world.

Doesn't really have the same ring to it.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 14/07/2020 15:30

It's a religious school, not really a shock they have a religious motto.

serenada · 14/07/2020 15:31

@WorraLiberty

Is that how you see religion? The world view of another woman?

bookmum08 · 14/07/2020 15:31

From a Church of England point of view I suppose they believe God created the world so it's his world.
Personally I don't think state schools should be affiliated with a particular faith but in England many schools are C of E ones so there often isn't a choice unfortunately. Other than changing to a non C of E school you will have to just ignore this stuff (unless you are actually a practicing Christian then - well - that's Christianity I suppose).

Goosefoot · 14/07/2020 15:32

If you want a secular school probably you should choose one. The CoE might not be the most vocally Christian body around, but they are pretty explicit that they are a religious group.

Theologically speaking the point of "God's world" as opposed to "our world" would be that the latter implies the value of the world is conferred by our thoughts about it, what we assign to it. Whereas in the first formulation it as a value of it's own apart from what we think or do about it.

Itsjustabitofbanter · 14/07/2020 15:32

It’s a religious school. I’m not religious but my children go to a catholic school. The motto is ‘everyone together with Jesus’. If religion offends you, find another school

MsEllany · 14/07/2020 15:33

Because it’s a church school. They have to mention god.

It would irk me too, but them’s the breaks unless you want to move schools.

TennisButterfly · 14/07/2020 15:34

I teach at a CofE school. God and Jesus are at the centre of everything we do. That is the ethos of our school - we are all part of God's world.
If you don't like it you shouldn't send your kids to a CofE school.

PhilODox · 14/07/2020 15:34

It's a Faith school- why are you surprised that God is at the centre of what they do? Confused

Immigrantsong · 14/07/2020 15:34

OP Jesus was a male. And probably the only man I would ever follow word by word. So if you don't like that, change to a non faith school.

serenada · 14/07/2020 15:34

@Goosefoot

So, it’s an ontological distinction?

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2020 15:35

[quote serenada]@WorraLiberty

No, I see religion as utter nonsense.

Hence my nonsensical post.

PhilODox · 14/07/2020 15:36

goosefoot there are no secular state schools in England. A school may be not affiliated to a faith, but none are secular, and all must have collective daily worship by law.

Tappering · 14/07/2020 15:36

They believe in God and therefore have a religious ethos and motto. As their beliefs are based upon the fact that God is the ultimate creator, so why wouldn't they put this front and centre?

If it bothers you so much then don't send your child to a religious school.

NailsNeedDoing · 14/07/2020 15:37

I agree with you, but it’s a CofE school so you have to expect that kind of thing. It’s wrong though, especially considering that people don’t often have the choice to use a school that isn’t CofE.

yelyah22 · 14/07/2020 15:37

...it's a church school!?

I'm not religious, FYI. But if you don't want your children teaching that this is god's world then why on earth have you sent your kids to a faith school?

serenada · 14/07/2020 15:37

Your contribution has been equally as valuable, I’m sure.

But in future, leave poor Doris alone. It’s patronising and poor taste to disparage those who sought solace in the only thing they could find that worked.

Bananacloud · 14/07/2020 15:37

Wow... this post is kinda pathetic...

frog22 · 14/07/2020 15:38

Why is it his world?

Is got a man?

frog22 · 14/07/2020 15:38

Why is it his world?

Is god a man?

backseatcookers · 14/07/2020 15:39

If you send your kids to a faith school then it's not exactly a huge surprise that their motto makes god the centre of things is it?

I'm not religious btw.

yelyah22 · 14/07/2020 15:39

Interesting PhilODox - "all must have collective daily worship by law", is this true? My primary school didn't, but that was in the 90s.
