To feel annoyed at school motto

WeasleyWoman · 14/07/2020 15:23

DS's primary school is CofE state mainstream. Its official motto is love hope forgiveness or similar which is great but on all letters they now say. Learning for Life: Ready to take our place in God's World.
I guess this shouldn't matter but it pisses me off. Why is it his world? Why not our world? The children's world? It might as well say Learning for life: ready to bow to the patriarchy and conform.

@lydia7986

A school near me has the motto ‘Serve and Obey’ - even worse, it’s a girls’ school.
@lydia7986 Serve and obey who, though? Is there a boy’s school? Does it have the same motto?
OverTheRainbow88 · 14/07/2020 17:15

It’s a CofE school, it God’s world according to Christians, which humans are stewards of. I would change schools if I didn’t like the Christian ethos of the Christian school I decided to send my child to

Getagripffs · 14/07/2020 17:16

Oh for God's sake. It's a Christian School. It's fundamental to Christianity that God created the world, that this is Gods' world and the purpose of life is to be as Christ like as one can be within God's world.

Whether you feel you had a choice or not as to the school your kid goes to, doesn't change the fact that a religious school will teach according to their faith.

If you have a beef with this you need to argue against the system, not against this school.

Pinkyyy · 14/07/2020 17:17
@pinkyyy It may be in your opinion but there are billions of people who disagree with you.
That's quite clear by some of the disgusting posts on this thread. For some people, religion is all that keeps them going, especially through tough times. People should be ashamed of themselves ridiculing those who choose to believe.

BoomBoomsCousin · 14/07/2020 17:21

That would piss me off a bit too OP. I’m not even that keen on the official motto. But of all the issues I have with the reach of our theocratic state, that slogan on the letter head would be amoung the least of it.

Stunning isn't it? Hmm You'd think people would want to consider the wider issues rather than just parrot one-liners, but apparantly not

Well it is God's world so I don't see the problem

I think you'll find that's an opinion, and FWIW I've every respect for your right to hold it
What I can't respect is any expectation that someone else should pay to push it

fridgeraiders · 14/07/2020 17:22

We live rurally. Local school is C of E. Schools of the nearest 6 villages all C of E. I think there might be a non affiliated primary in the nearest town half an hour away assuming there would be a place. People don't always 'choose' to send their child to a religious school.

Pinkyyy · 14/07/2020 17:23

@ Puzzledandpissedoff Sorry, I should have added an 'in my opinion', my bad

Ballllzac · 14/07/2020 17:28

Where do you all live that you can “just” send your child to a non-religious school? They’re all religious around here...

MollyButton · 14/07/2020 17:30

God is not male (even bible verses, only a few comparing God to a mother).

God creating the world doesn't equal 7 day creation - the mainstream is more that he "created" the big bang etc.

C of E school - God in the motto is pretty normal. The "Learning to Live" thing is even more normal.

No child is ever really influenced by the school motto in my experience.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/07/2020 17:30

No need to apologise, Pinkyyy. By virtue of being unprovable the existence of God can't be anything but an opinion, and as said I've no problem with that at all

What I object to is the lack of choice this has created for those who might not agree, and the finances involved

DDiva · 14/07/2020 17:31

It's a c of e school it will have a Christian motto and some Christian teaching. If you dont want that send them to a school with no religious links.

Charleyhorses · 14/07/2020 17:32

We moved to East Sussex end of year 4. Every school in a 5mile radius is a c of e school!
I just take a benign view.

DDiva · 14/07/2020 17:33

I'm suprised so many only have religious schools we dont have any around here.

PumpkinP · 14/07/2020 17:34

I’m in south London so easy to choose a non religious school.

@Puzzledandpissedoff it may well be true that people’s local schools are CofE, but there will definitely be state schools in catchment, albeit further away. So sending DCs to church school most certainly is a choice.
Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2020 17:36

The change of motto may well also be a response to an Inspection Report? C of E schools endure double inspections : Ofsted and the Cof E one.

I experienced both as a governor and the religious one was all about assemblies, mottos, RS lessons, messages and values etc. A whole school prayer was rewritten because the inspectors said it wasn't specifically Christian enough...

Much nicer than an Ofsted in all other ways.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2020 17:37

Our local middle school is a Cof E school. It's the catchment school and there isn't another one.

You could send DCs out of catchment but would then not get a guaranteed school place or funded transport, so the point about catchment is not correct.

Sandii · 14/07/2020 17:38

I like the motto . Too many kids today ( including mine l’m ashamed to say 😆 ) think THEY own the world and it should revolve around them.

DDiva · 14/07/2020 17:39

We live in East Sussex none of our 4 local schools are religious and I can only think of 3 out of the 7 further afield that are.

I wonder if it's more small village schools as they often seem to be linked to the local Church.

cheeseismydownfall · 14/07/2020 17:44

@karenista, it honestly isn't. I do get that it must seem improbable if your local school scene is very different, but of the 33 primary schools in our area, only three -three- are secular. And why should parents have to drive their children to school, and have their children miss out on local friendships and all the associated benefits of attending their state-funded village school, just to avoid a religious education? Religious practice (and-especially-faith based selection) has absolutely no place in state funded schools.

Runmybathforme · 14/07/2020 17:45

You are being very unreasonable. You sent your children to a church school, what did you expect ?

BlusteryShowers · 14/07/2020 17:46

I was ignorant of just how religious faith schools are until I went for an interview at a Catholic school once. So much Jesus! I'd assumed it was kept mainly for assemblies and RE lessons.

I was all for upholding the values but I don't think I could have gone full Catholic and I would have to be in a difficult situation indeed to consider sending my DCs to a faith school.

melonslicexx · 14/07/2020 17:51

I almost considered sending me daughter to the local Catholic school last year. They basically had a great Ofsted and reputation. I did my work experience their. Popped on the website of all three of my schools I was putting down. Just reading the website put me off and it went down as number 3. The website was focused on religion and not much at all about learning. I wanted to know so much more. They quoted from the Bible too.

So yeah I get you. But then again I'm not religious and i understand that others are and that means alot to them.

It does sound like you are living your life ready to die though lol. God's world. Toe that is death.

NeutrinoWrangler · 14/07/2020 17:55

I can't imagine being offended or annoyed or whatever that a school with a stated, clear religious affiliation refers to God or "God's world". Very unreasonable to expect anything else, honestly.
