AIBU to think this and what do your DC’s friends call you? DH heard the friends today and he says he thinks they are “rude” and it should be “Mrs” or “Mr. “ WIBU?

As a kid I was always taught to call parents Mr or Mrs Surname. But most of my friends parents were very informal and asked me to call them Julie or Josephine etc. I could never bring myself to call them by their name so I compromised and called them “Jack’s Mum” or “Jade’s Mum” etc haha.

I wouldn’t care if DC’s friends called me by my name as long as they were polite and respectful to me. One of my friends called my dad “Homer Simpson” to his face, so that friend was never allowed around after that. I can see why, being rude to an adult in their own house!

GameSetMatch · 13/07/2020 18:59

My sons friends always call me by my first name apart from one who calls me mum Confused

FilledSoda · 13/07/2020 18:59

That's how it was done when I was a child and it does still sound odd to my ears to hear a child use an adults first name.

littlepeas · 13/07/2020 19:00

Just remembered one of my friends at school (in the 90’s) used to call my dad ‘Mr’ and then my first name.

DotForShort · 13/07/2020 19:01

How bizarre. I'm not far off your DH's age and as a child I always called my friends' parents by their first names.

And he has no right dictating what you are called in your own home. That is entirely your decision.

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/07/2020 19:02

Totally going against the grain here but I am with your DH on this and I too am 50!

It's just the way that I was brought up, it seeming more respectful somehow.

My Nephews call me Auntie and I would have felt totally wrong calling my next door neighbour who passed away last year and knew since birth by anything other than Mrs.

I feel uncomfortable calling DS's teacher by her first name too!

olympicsrock · 13/07/2020 19:03

I’m in my 40s . My children’s friends call me by my first name and it is the same with other families.

When I was a child it was the same with families I knew well.

Notredamn · 13/07/2020 19:04

I'm laughing at the thought of a child calling Mrs Mysurname! Reminds me of when Oliver Twist was being all polite and formal, impressing Nancy

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 13/07/2020 19:04

With very close friends I am Aunty Tiny, to others I am just Tiny.

Why would they call you Mrs..

Emeraldshamrock · 13/07/2020 19:05

I'm glad all the fake aunt/uncle has changed it was very confusing knowing who actually was your biological cousin or a fake one.
It was a safeguarding issue too. Go give uncle blah blah a kiss goodbye. 🤮

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/07/2020 19:05

I'm 50 and when I was a child it was normal to address friend's parents as Mr or Mrs unless told otherwise. I've never expected it with my kids friends though. I'm just Doris* to them.

*Not my real name 🙂

BobbieDraper · 13/07/2020 19:06

I've hot 2 kidd; at some time or another, they've both had all the kids from their classes over. Every single on calls me by my first name because that's what I tell them to do. And they call all the other parents by their first names too.

Your husband is very old fashioned.

Wannabegreenfingers · 13/07/2020 19:06

I usually get called 'insert my child's name' Mummy. I don't care as long as they are polite. Your husband is being odd.

Louise91417 · 13/07/2020 19:06

I was brought up to call adults mr/mrs surname until they said otherwise..i have to say i find it a little sad that children dont do this now, i dont think its rude, just maybe a little forward..

Howmanysleepsnow · 13/07/2020 19:07

I’m either my first name, Oliver’s mum or in one case Mrs Oliver! I never get called Mrs (Surname) and I wouldn’t feel comfortable with it if I was.

coconutcoconutcrack · 13/07/2020 19:08

Most of my oldesr dc's friends tend to call me 'big coconut'. Only because one of her circle of friends has the same first name as me.

Doesnt bother me, they can call me what they want as long as its not offensive

123rd · 13/07/2020 19:11

I NEVER use Mrs xxx when i book a table or make apt's etc. And when I introduce myself to anybody any age I I say my first name.
I would find it very odd if any one of the dc friends didn't call me my first name.

Butterbeeeen · 13/07/2020 19:13

I always insist on being called by my first name. I also work at the children’s school so they call me Mrs Butterbeeeen at school. I like them to realise they are here as my children’s friends and not at school so I like there to be a difference.

hoohaaa · 13/07/2020 19:14

Yes he says they should call you Mrs / Mr until invited to use first names. DD’s boyfriend calls him “Mr,” (he’s 17). DH has another title, but thinks he’s being very flexi in not expecting that from the boyfriend! I told him to call me by my first name because I’d rather they were comfortable hanging out here than elsewhere.

Fleamaker123 · 13/07/2020 19:16

He sounds like he's probably just out of touch with what has changed from when he was a child... I'm a similar age and I remember my friends parents were always Mr and Mrs Whatever, never by first name. I still see them now and they're still Mr and Mrs to me, feels odd calling them by first name.

AdaFromYorkshire · 13/07/2020 19:17

My DC were friends with the DC of one of their teachers. They had no trouble with switching from Mrs Smith at school to Jane when they went round to play.

SockYarn · 13/07/2020 19:17

My parents used to make me call my friends' parents Mrs X or Y, and their friends too.

It was weird and that was in the 70s.

Allmyeye · 13/07/2020 19:19

It’s the norm now. I prefer it tbh. Feel sorry for your DC if he insists.

sirfredfredgeorge · 13/07/2020 19:19

I could never bring myself to call them by their name so I compromised and called them “Jack’s Mum” or “Jade’s Mum” etc haha.

I absolutely detest this, I hate my identity being taken away and simply being an extension of the child - utterly irrational of course but you would have annoyed me - not that I would've likely complained other than asking you again to call me Fred (or George).

TheLegendOfZelda · 13/07/2020 19:19

Hilarious

It's the 1970s all over again
