To think Monica and Chandler were a much better couple

Than Ross and Rachel?

I'm currently rewatching Friends on Netflix.
Ross was possessive and jealous. He couldn't stand when Rachel was successful in her new career and wanted everything about him, even with his own sister. She could do so much better and I still hate the fact she ended up with him, despite having a child together. They didn't suit each other at all and were complete opposite. Plus the whole 'we were on a break' thing was just ridiculous.

Monica and Chandler, however, were such a natural couple. He really grew up when he got with her. They loved each other despite their differences and quirks. If anything, they seemed to be better as a couple because of them. I loved them together.

Yes, I'm aware they're just characters in a TV show but amuse me.

YABU - Ross and Rachel were a much better couple

YANBU - Monica and Chandler had the best relationship

Ross always made my skin crawl.

Rainycloudyday · 11/07/2020 19:15

YANBU they were way better. Although I did love Monica and Richard together...

AgnesNaismith · 11/07/2020 19:15

Of course YANBU

katy1213 · 11/07/2020 19:16

Ross was repulsive.

M0mmyneedswine · 11/07/2020 19:18

I never liked ross and Rachel as a couple

LonginesPrime · 11/07/2020 19:19

They had to have all their exaggerated flaws because the writers/producers wouldn't have been able to get so much mileage out of the show if all the characters were emotionally mature, empathetic adults who acted their ages.

While I loved the show and many of the characters in its day, they were all a bunch of adult babies playing for laughs. Which they did very well.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 11/07/2020 19:21

Yanbu

They were an awful couple.

I think the writers started off with this idea that it was about them, or really about Ross getting the girl he always wanted, and couldn’t move away from that even though the story had clearly gone in another direction.

It almost seemed like an ideal they were trying to sell to us.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 11/07/2020 19:22

I rewatched it with DD having read all the threads on here about Ross and him being a controlling twat. TBH they were all a bit annoying, not just him!!

I think the trouble with Ross is that, having fancied her since high school, Rachel was more of a fantasy than an actual GF, so any time she stepped outside of the role he’d written in his mind for her over the years, he couldn’t handle it.

She didn’t cover herself in glory either tbh, but yes, as a couple Monica and Chandler were cute. I did hate all the porn stuff and the Chandler as a “commitmentphobe” stuff though, but they had a lot of series to fill, so some storylines were bound to be a miss.

Crunchymum · 11/07/2020 19:23

Yes. Much preferred Monica and Chandler as a couple.

Yes Ross was a deplorable partner to Rachel.

Yes all my fave episodes are Ross ones (PIVOT, tanning salon, teeth whitening, leather trousers, my sandwich)

He does become less cunty as the series go on?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 11/07/2020 19:23

YANBU they were way better. Although I did love Monica and Richard together...

Yes, creepy on paper but actually very sweet together!

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2020 19:25

Ross-Yuk
Monica & Richard-great.

HenSolo · 11/07/2020 19:25

I gotta disagree, but purely on the basis of chemistry - Monica and Chandler had none for me. Ross and Rachel had it in the earlier seasons especially, and Monica and Richard - yowza Grin

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 11/07/2020 19:28

Apparently Lisa Kudrow and Matt Le Blanc tried to persuade the writers to throw out a comment in the final episode to suggest that Phoebe and Joey had been having FWB casual sex throughout the entire show until she met Mike but they decided against it

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/07/2020 19:29

Ross was that archetypal controlling character, which is what made him funny because no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't control his life - see pp on PIVOT, fake tan, etc - absolutely all the best episodes.

It's just that now, when we're a bit more grown up and know better, that controlling doesn't actually play 'funny' in the context of a relationship.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 11/07/2020 19:30

I always hated Ross. I was only about 10 when I first started watching friends but it wasn't until researching them a few years ago, I realised why I hated him.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/07/2020 19:30

Ross was a pathetic, sexist, whiny man child. I dont know how anyone could stand his petulant pouting when he didnt get what he wanted. He was gross.

I think Monica and Richard were adorable together!

MusicToMyEars800 · 11/07/2020 19:31

Yabnu! I loved Monica and Chandler as a couple,
Ross was always a creep and Rachel shouldn’t of ended up with him.

LimeHookSinker · 11/07/2020 19:31

Monica and Richard were the dream couple. M&C are a better couple than R&R but I couldn’t imagine them existing in real life.

Contentious opinion - Phoebe is actually a much worse character than Ross. She’s a bitch.

elenacampana · 11/07/2020 19:32

Ross and Rachel, just like Carrie and Mr Big, Jack and Vera and Gaby and Carlos wouldn’t have stood the test of multiple seasons if they’d been perfectly right for each other like Monica and Chandler.

Monica and Chandler are what you want in real life but they aren’t iconic TV relationship canon material - for that you need; flaws, tension, mistakes and for characters to be pulling away and apart throughout the show’s run. Iconic characters misbehave, it’s just how it is :-)

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/07/2020 19:32

I liked Ross and Rachel- to be fair (to the fictitious character) Ross’ first wife was a lesbian, I can Believe he would be insecure. But he was always there for her: when her prom date didn’t turn up, when she had a bruised rib, when her dad died. Chandler and Monica felt a bit too- couldn’t get anyone else so they settled to me.

vanillandhoney · 11/07/2020 19:33

Monica and Chandler are better than Ross and Rachel.

But Monica and Richard were the best.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/07/2020 19:34

But Monica and Richard were the best

Yeessssss! they were so hot together

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 11/07/2020 19:35

Also the only character I REALLY hated was that fucking nasty bitch Susan!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 11/07/2020 19:35

I thought they originally had in mind that Phoebe and Joey would get together but then they wrote Mike in for Phoebe because they wanted to do the spin off “Joey” with him as a single guy.

MiddlesexGirl · 11/07/2020 19:36

I was very sad for Joey - still on his own at the end 😥
