AIBU?

To think Monica and Chandler were a much better couple

Than Ross and Rachel?

I'm currently rewatching Friends on Netflix.
Ross was possessive and jealous. He couldn't stand when Rachel was successful in her new career and wanted everything about him, even with his own sister. She could do so much better and I still hate the fact she ended up with him, despite having a child together. They didn't suit each other at all and were complete opposite. Plus the whole 'we were on a break' thing was just ridiculous.

Monica and Chandler, however, were such a natural couple. He really grew up when he got with her. They loved each other despite their differences and quirks. If anything, they seemed to be better as a couple because of them. I loved them together.

Yes, I'm aware they're just characters in a TV show but amuse me.

YABU - Ross and Rachel were a much better couple

YANBU - Monica and Chandler had the best relationship

I agree. Although it was hard to believe any chemistry there. He was punching to the point of 'as if'.

If I re-watch, I actually can't sit through the episodes where Joey and Rachel get together as it makes me cringe. What were the writers thinking?

@LimeHookSinker

Monica and Richard were the dream couple. M&C are a better couple than R&R but I couldn’t imagine them existing in real life.

Contentious opinion - Phoebe is actually a much worse character than Ross. She’s a bitch.

100% agree that Phoebe was a bitch. She did have her nice moments but in general, she was selfish and self-centred. They often makes jokes about her being ‘flaky’ but I just think she didn’t give a shit about anyone but herself.

I am also watching friends on netflix. At the time I really loved Ross and Rachel as a couple and was genuinely on the fence with their break up as to who was at fault.
Watching it now though Ross was totally in the wrong, controlling and jealous.

I'm up to this bit now. Totally cringe.

I never get why people hated the Joey and Rachel storyline. I thought they suited each other really well and Joey seemed almost sweet because it felt v unlikely, to me they had no chemistry, also it ruined the illusion that men and women can be platonic friends.

Also his first wife cheated on him, told him she's gay, then left him. Then told him she's pregnant and the ex wife's partner insisted he would play third wheel in his own child's life and he was expected to just go with it without fuss. He did..with minimal fuss which is outstanding considering a woman wouldn't be expected to do the same thing (Imagine an ex-husband's OW and now partner insisting your dc are hers too and they have to also bear her name, call her mum, etc and you should like it or lump it). You lumped it and not only that, ended up giving her away at her wedding to your ex.

Seriously Ross was a saint and allowed a few weaknesses.

I seem to be in the minority but for some reason I also liked the idea of Rachael and Joey. If there wasn't as much history with her and creepy Ross I think they would have made a great couple. To me she was someone he would finally settle down for.

100% agree that Phoebe was a bitch oh I didn’t get this, I felt she was like a lot of people who lose parents young (myself included), fiercely independent. Also out of all of them if felt she was the only one with friends outside of the group.

Ross was creepy. I never liked Ross.

Chandler was always the sexiest of the three lads, even though Joey was better looking.

Wow...the ross hate is interesting

Reasons why Ross sucked:

1.He wont let his kid play with dolls in case it makes him gay
2.He said someone else's name at his OWN wedding!

  1. He's possessive and jealous
  2. He dated his own student- thats pretty grim
  3. He cheated on Rachel (even though they were on a break, he slept with someone literally 5 minutes later)
  4. He never defended Monica to his parents even when they were obviously favouring him
  5. He snogged chandler's mum
  6. He's against having a male nanny because sexist
  7. He lied to rachel about them still being married when they tied the knot in vegas

10. He expected rachel to give up her Paris dream for him

I just finished rewatching the whole thing!

I also love Monica and Chandler, thats the relationship I want!

Whoever said about Ross putting Rachel on a pedestal absolutely nailed it for me. She could never live up to his image of her.

They weren't actually together for that long during the show. The whole Ross and Rachel thing was more angst than happy times.

I loved Rachel and Joey together, I think they suited well and he was so sweet where she was concerned.

Both couples are divorced by now. Monica would have obsessed over every little parenting detail and Chandler would be commuting back to the city everyday for work so would "hardly ever be at home to help with the children" (quote from Monica). However anything Chandler does would be 'wrong' and going against Monica's perfect parenting plan. Now divorced Chandler lives back in the city. The twins stay on weekends and love it because their Dad lets them eat McDonalds, watch non educational TV and not have to practice their music and sport 'activities'.
Rachel got fed up in the suburbs really quick and decided to go to Paris for a couple of months 'just to see what could have been'. She didn't come back. Emma stayed with Ross and Ben decided he didn't want to live a 'trendy 'city life with his two moms and moved up to the suburbs to live with Ross and Emma. Ben is training to be a boring accountant much to his two moms horror. Ross became a successful children's writer of a series of books about dinosaurs. Rachel married a rich french man and sent Emma to a boarding school. Emma is now something like a character from Gossip Girl.

I never really liked C & M as a couple although not sure why, they just became annoying. Ross was awful and I don't know why Rachel would still like him except for habit. Monica and Richard were the best.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Joey and Rachel was the worst story line idea ever btw and ruined the end series for me

Yes I found it forced and wierd, but then maybe that was the idea? That and the irony of Joey having been in love with her and having to get over that, for Rachel to then feel for him. I thought maybe it wasn't supposed to happen from the writers pov, just a story filler.
I got caught up in the whole Ross and Rachel will they won't they thing at the time, I suppose it's a bit like a modern fairy tale as in we know that they're supposed to be together but they don't, and the trials and tribulations of getting to that happy ending.
The "we were on a break" thing was the worst part of that storyline, imo. Regardless of if he believed they were or not, if someone you loved and who had supposedly been in love with you did that hours after breaking up it would hurt and Ross just didn't get that.
But on the other side if you thought you had lost someone you had loved for that long you might be tempted to get seriously drunk and behave like a twat. I just think he should have owned it more.
Monica and Chandler were good together, I liked the way it developed and that Monica didn't cling when he got scared
"Don't want to be in an adult relationship, don't be in one"
I loved Mike too, he just fit. I never did like David.

Monica and Chandler were a much healthier couple but I definitely prefer Ross and Rachel. Their chemistry was amazing. And because this is fiction I don't really care that both Ross and Rachel were overly jealous and possessive. I just find their relationship to be more interesting to watch on screen than Monica and Chandler.

Ross gave up his time to stand in for Rachel's prom date who didn't show up but later did and Ross was left looking like a fool (Granted Rachel didn't know). He messed up his date in a restaurant because he felt sorry for his pregnant ex wife who was eating alone after her partner had to leave for work and they argued before she left. He invited her over and wanted to help - she appreciated it.

He missed his all important lecture that he had prepared for for ages and stayed with Rachel when she had a health problem.

All these things and more he did with no fuss at all. Yet dear old loverman "I carried you in my arms when you were little" Richard is somehow better? Just because he's "hot" and only icky in a certain light? Yet he refused to be anything else to Monica other than a lover?

Interesting.

FWIW I don't have a problem with Richard - I also liked their relationship because he seemed like a sensible guy and they had chemistry but Ross couldn't have been worse if we're judging.

@LoseLooseLucy

Joey was the most loyal friend of them all, he never screwed any of the others over but was shit on a few times himself.

I agree. I always wanted a friend like Joey growing up. He always had your back, even if he didn’t agree with you, he supported you. He was a terrible boyfriend, but an awesome friend.

I had a dream about Friends earlier this week. In it, Chandler was actually gay and using Monica as his beard. Rachel went to a lesbian hen do and was talking about the lifestyle and thinking that maybe she was actually a lesbian. In my dream, I was thinking that Friends was far more diverse than I had thought it was back in the day. The kicker of the dream, however, was that the main lesbian was played by Brian Cranston.

You really need to get out more Ravenesque. Lockdown is doing you no favours . . .

Without the Ross and Rachel storyline, I think Friends would've been a damp squib. Everything else was just secondary.

I just rewatched the whole thing and I love how easily Monica and Chandler became a couple. They knew one another well and upon rewatch it is clear that they just clicked and it works and they are now a permanent couple. Even with the sitcom foibles, they worked.

It reminded me of myself and my husband who were friends for a very long time first. Then one day we weren’t and it was just obvious we were going to be a couple forever.
