To report this person to their employer for hate speech?

NickMyLipple · 03/07/2020 20:39

I've attached a screenshot - I am not friends with this person. She does however display her work on social media and she is in her uniform with her lanyard on display in her profile picture and in other photos which are accessible to the public.

It's NHS Values Week and I feel very strongly that if you're going to publically display your workplace you need to be responsible in not making such racist and hateful comments.

I called her out on it and the post has now been deleted.

AIBU to call the HR department and complain, or should I leave it and hope that she thinks carefully before she posts in future?

Report her, disgusting and very unprofessional.

Chaaaaaching · 03/07/2020 21:38

“No. You don't ruin people's whole lives and prevent them from providing for themselves and their families for one comment.”

^ This x 100000000

Please don’t ruin someone’s life/career over one comment on social media.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/07/2020 21:38

Of course it does. A persons thoughts influence their actions.

Which is why it's so important to eliminate thought-crime. No decent person ever makes a misjudgement or has unworthy impulses.

I cannot imagine this person gives the same level of care to people she so dislikes that she does to her other patients

This. People are completely black or white personalities with no complexity. Anyone who behaves poorly once must inevitably be evil.

This is a democracy

Yes, but heroes like OP are workign to fix that.

FleetsumNJetsum · 03/07/2020 21:39

@YgritteSnow

No. You don't ruin people's whole lives and prevent them from providing for themselves and their families for one comment.

I used to really wonder how people could inform on their neighbours and friends in authoritarian regimes, couldn't really comprehend how that dynamic played out. I feel like I am watching it creep in right before my very eyes now.

Agree, YgritteSnow. Honestly, it is chilling. And all of this seems to have happened so fast.
TaxTheRatFarms · 03/07/2020 21:40

Sorry, people defending this actually think it’s ok to make racist comments in public?

People can think what they like but saying those things in public harms people. It gives racists the confidence to say and perpetrate more racism. Which leads to more race based hate crimes. Which harm people.

But someone’s right to make a racist comment is more important than not causing harm to other people.

What a way to live Sad

cabbageking · 03/07/2020 21:40

Surely you know your friend and what their views are.

You know if this was out of character or not. You know her good and bad qualities because you chose to be friends with her because of her good qualities. You obviously discussed the comment and have decided to continue with the friendship?
If so why would you report her?
If you find the post and her response unacceptable then report her but end your friendship too.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 03/07/2020 21:41

Agree with everyone else. You've called her out, she's deleted it, now move on.

Who is to say it is only one comment? OP has said she is not a friend of the person so what if there has been multiple incidents of this behaviour throughout her SM? People need to be held accountable for their actions
TaxTheRatFarms · 03/07/2020 21:41

“Chilling”

But racism is fine?

yellowtoys · 03/07/2020 21:43

Report.
It's not just an opinion, if it was, nobody would be concerned with reporting as it would have no consequence.
I have lots of opinions, I often express them publicly, none of them constitute hate speech and would get me fired.
So let's stop being so worried about cancel culture and let's worry more about the impact that hate speech has on people and society.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/07/2020 21:43

@TaxTheRatFarms

I've read the thread and done a term search and I can't actually see who said this.

Could you clarify which comment said it’s ok to make racist comments in public? I might be able to find out who their employer is.

YgritteSnow · 03/07/2020 21:44

So let's stop being so worried about cancel culture

No. I will never stop fighting that.

I'm with dom:

Yes, but heroes like OP are workign to fix that.

Democracy is all we got, at the mo. It isn't pretty sometimes. We try to change things for the better but not with attack dogs.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/07/2020 21:44

Very good point. It's especially important they are held accountable by strangers for hypothethical actions.

YgritteSnow · 03/07/2020 21:45

I like your posts @donquixotedelamancha Grin

FleetsumNJetsum · 03/07/2020 21:45

Sorry, don not dom

akerman · 03/07/2020 21:47

Living in a democracy doesn't mean you get to say what you want. Hate speech is still illegal, as is racist provocation.

I'm pleased Starkey is being called to account, but he is wealthy enough to be OK and he's been spouting offensive comments for a long time. But I don't think I would report this woman. I don't like people not to have at least one chance and she did take her comment down, when called out on it. What if she has children depending on her?

donquixotedelamancha · 03/07/2020 21:47

I have lots of opinions, I often express them publicly, none of them constitute hate speech and would get me fired.

I think you should let us be the judge of that. Could you please post your personal details so we can go through your social media in case someone might be offended?

TooTrueToBeGood · 03/07/2020 21:47

I wonder how many of the people criticising the OP would do the same if the issue was an individual making highly sexual comments about children. I bet you'd all be sharpening your pitchforks and demanding the OP report. You're racism apologists pure and simple, and that almost certainly means you are racists yourselves.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 03/07/2020 21:48

This place is horrid sometimes.

For starters, pp who mentioned Gender Critical . Don't be daft. GC is rooted in Science and racism is NotScience.. can't compare the two

  1. Yes, we can legally be rascist in public as long as you're not also signed up to a Code of Conduct. If her I D was visible then she will definitely be breaking NHS rules.
  2. This person is in a position of caring. where vulnerable patients/ people are even more vulnerable . Would you like to be a patient or a family member having to leave a loved one dependent on someone having deplorable views?
  3. Racism. and it's apologists are so much more visible these days. Clearly, people feel confident to say revolting things in public.
  4. I despair. Rascist behaviour shouldn't be tolerated, and these threads show how widespread it is.
haggistramp · 03/07/2020 21:48

Fucking hate cancel culture. Its fascism wrapped up in wokeness. Get a grip op.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/07/2020 21:48

I like your posts @donquixotedelamancha**

To do otherwise would be wrongthink which is doubleplus ungood.

Ilovechinese · 03/07/2020 21:48

Yes report her, cant believe how many people are saying yabu! Shows just how many racist people are on here. As for someone saying she feels ashamed enough to delete it, more like she was worried that someone would report it! She obviously does hold these views or she wouldn't have said it in the first place! Report it then its up to her employers what to do with it

srownbkingirl · 03/07/2020 21:49

I do think calling her out was a very good thing to do. People do need to be "pulled up" on hateful attitudes and views towards others, if only to give them a chance to think about what they've said/written.

Deleting her post shows either cowardice or she realised what she'd done. That's a good start, hopefully.
