To report this person to their employer for hate speech?

I've attached a screenshot - I am not friends with this person. She does however display her work on social media and she is in her uniform with her lanyard on display in her profile picture and in other photos which are accessible to the public.

It's NHS Values Week and I feel very strongly that if you're going to publically display your workplace you need to be responsible in not making such racist and hateful comments.

I called her out on it and the post has now been deleted.

AIBU to call the HR department and complain, or should I leave it and hope that she thinks carefully before she posts in future?

@Notnowokay

I don’t think it is right to punish her twice for the same mistake. If you have the time and energy wait until she does/ says something similar and then get her her employer know.
How has she been punished already?

Here’sMe yes, some of us don’t what to share our country with racists. Because racism isn’t particularly “nice” either, is it. Hi

iano · 03/07/2020 21:14

Report her! I agree that we were all over reporting ppl a few weeks ago. Yet a person potentially in charge of BAME lives can just express their racist 'opinion'.

TaxTheRatFarms · 03/07/2020 21:15

Ignore the hi Confused Weird phone!

NotTerfNorCis · 03/07/2020 21:15

This is a democracy, we should be free to hold whatever political opinions we want, even if other people find them odious.

If she was sharing those opinions at work, that would be different. We all have to be careful what we say at work, and not just about politics - it's called being professional. But outside of work, she can say what she wants.

We are free to hold any opinion we care to. We can't publicise them on social media whilst wearing a workplace lanyard with our names on without consequences.

As a HCP would she not say the same about any business person?
If the tweet was as innocuous as you're implying she probably wouldn't have deleted it.

PrimalLass · 03/07/2020 21:19

Ugh just mind your own business.

Oh for goodness sakes.. You've told her, she took it down. Why do you need to report her to her employer?

TaxTheRatFarms · 03/07/2020 21:24

@GiveAProperDogABone

Why do you assume she is being racist? Why is she not just referring to a business man who refuses to shut his business down, therefore putting a lot of people at risk?. As a HCP would she not say the same about any business person?
What, kick them out of the country? She wouldn't be saying that about a white British businessman. Whether the people she’s talking about are British by nationality or not, she’s decided that it’s ok to kick them out of the country based on the colour of their skin.

She could have said “those factory owners should be locked up/fined/banned from owing a factory.” But she didn’t, did she.

GuiltyPleasure · 03/07/2020 21:24

I work in the public sector & it's part of our terms & conditions about appropriate social media use, even on our personal accounts. Anything we post that could bring the values of the organisation into disrepute could be subject to disciplinary action. That post was completely racist & if she's identifiably linked to her organisation I'd definitely report.

srownbkingirl · 03/07/2020 21:25

Wouldn't want someone fired though, don't think it helps to have someone unemployed. However I despair at having someone with such views in a position of care for people, some of whom would be the very same people she wants 'back to their country'. One doesn't need to stretch to imagine the "care" she'll be providing to these people when no one's looking.

Not sure what the answer is here but if she has children, they don't deserve to suffer for the "sins" of their mum. Sacking her will not stop her from having those views. She'll just learn to hide them better.

TowelHoarder · 03/07/2020 21:25

Reporting her to her employer is a bit 1984 isn’t it?

If she had posted about actually hurting someone or intending to commit a crime then yes, report away, but otherwise I think you just have to accept that some people will have opinions that you disapprove of, find offensive even, but once you go down the road of controlling what people think you end up in North Korea.

“I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it” - Voltaire

LastTrainEast · 03/07/2020 21:26

Leave it now or you're no better than the people 'cancelling' women all over the place.

And she had a right to be angry at people endangering lives.

kazzer2867 · 03/07/2020 21:28

@ArnoJambonsBike

I'm not sure whats the most atrocious. The views of that person or the font you have decided to have on your phone.

Of course the font is worse than being an out an out racist.

I'd report her. She could be caring for the very people she has showed such disdain for in her post.

OP. Your problem was posting on here in the first place. Mumsnet isn't the place to discuss racism. Well done for calling her out. We need more people like you.

JellyFishSquish · 03/07/2020 21:29

Can we just stop it with the "cancel culture" already?

You are not the thought police. None of us have a say in what other people think. Live your own life without blame. Refuse to spread hate and slowly things will change.

Reporting people to their employers is hateful, and all you will have gained is an enemy.

SusieOwl4 · 03/07/2020 21:30

I reported a very similar post , actually worse and more racist to face book . They refused to take it down and said just block the poster

TooTrueToBeGood · 03/07/2020 21:32

Her comment was not just a poor choice of words, it very clearly demonstrates a deep-seated racist attitude.If she works in the NHS then she is dealing with, and potentially directly responsible for the care of, people in highly vulnerable situations. I'm not normally one for encouraging reporting but in this situation, yes. It's less about her bringing her workplace into disrepute and more about her views compromising the care received from her by non-white patients.

FleetsumNJetsum · 03/07/2020 21:32

Well that's not creepy and dystopian at all. Hmm

No. You don't ruin people's whole lives and prevent them from providing for themselves and their families for one comment.

I used to really wonder how people could inform on their neighbours and friends in authoritarian regimes, couldn't really comprehend how that dynamic played out. I feel like I am watching it creep in right before my very eyes now.
