Please read and keep this thread active if possible.

www.nuh.nhs.uk/latest-news/for-many-people-with-a-blood-cancer-a-stem-cell-donor-is-their-best-chance-of-survival-however-finding-a-matching-blood-stem-cell-donor-is-not-easy-4704

Amy desperately needs a donor within the next week or so. Are you eligible?

There are four main donor registries. You only need to register to oneas the information from all registers is collated when looking for a match.

  1. The DKMS Registry (age restriction is 18 to 55 years):www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now
  1. The Anthony Nolan Registry (age restriction is 16 to 30 years):www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells
  1. The Welsh Bone Marrow Registry (age restriction is 17 to 31 years):www.welsh-blood.org.uk/giving-blood/bone-marrow-donor-registry/
  1. The NHS British Bone Marrow Registry (eligibility determined when you attend to give a blood donation):www.bbmr.co.uk/joining-the-register/

Thank you ❤

Im already on the Anthony Nolan one (although I'm now over 30 so I wonder if I need to re-register?).

Was a very simple process. Please do it if you can.

SweepTheHalls · 02/07/2020 08:59

I am on the register and bumping for you.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/07/2020 09:00

I'm also curious about the Anthony Nolan one....i registered many years ago.....wonder if our bone marrow us too old now.

(It was a 2 minute nurse appointment to collect the blood needed to send them).

SimonJT · 02/07/2020 09:03

I have shared it, I am unable to donate as I have type one diabetes.

comeasyouare91 · 02/07/2020 09:05

I've just registered. My Dad died of blood cancer recently and had been meaning to do this. Hoping I end up a match for someone

momamama · 02/07/2020 09:13

I'm registered with DKMS already. Bumping for you x

Ticktocklovelyclock · 02/07/2020 09:14

I’m registered already but agree more people should think about signing up.
Want to do some thing positive in this broken work? This might just be it...

frumpety · 02/07/2020 09:14

I don't think I am able to as had a blood transfusion 10 years ago ? Will ask my eligble children to look at it though and my Brother Smile

Saladd0dger · 02/07/2020 09:17

caringcarer · 02/07/2020 09:19

This is really, really important

Cheesestring84 · 02/07/2020 09:23

Already registered, so bumping

scaevola · 02/07/2020 09:26

"I'm also curious about the Anthony Nolan one....i registered many years ago.....wonder if our bone marrow us too old now"

The sample they took is analysed and key markers are noted. When someone needs a match, they look for people on the register who have those markers. A potential match is then retested, and the donation process is explained. Only if detailed testing confirms the best match, and the donor confirms consent, does it go ahead.

It really is a gift of life.

Healthquestion101 · 02/07/2020 09:26

Already on the DKMS so bumping for you too. Sooo important.

HereForYou2020 · 02/07/2020 09:28

I hope they find a match.

Keep bumping the thread so lots of people read.

FriedasCarLoad · 02/07/2020 09:30

Can't do anything about this now as 35 weeks pregnant, but will put in diary to look into in a few months. I looked into it a few years ago and can't remember why I wasn't eligible then.

And bump.

HogwartsForever11 · 02/07/2020 09:30

This is so important, also bumping!
I signed up to Anthony Nolan at university and was part of a society than ran events recruiting more people to the register.

Whilst you can only sign up to the Anthony Nolan register until the age of 30, you stay on it until you're 60. If two matches were found for the same person, the younger one would be more likely to be chosen, but older people can definitely be a match!

agas · 02/07/2020 09:31

I've just signed up OP, thank you for sharing this otherwise I wouldn't have seen it.

HamishDent · 02/07/2020 09:33

I have just registered on DMKS as too old for the others.

Serin · 02/07/2020 09:34

I'm on the DKMS register and my sons are awaiting their tests. Its just a quick mouth swab that is sent out in the post and you post back to them .
I hope Amy finds a match.

jackdaw141 · 02/07/2020 09:35

The recent protocol has been to eradicate the leukaemia, rebuild, then prepare for the transplant cells. It is a holistic process that takes several months. Identification of the donor normally starts in the first phase and it is a worldwide search. If there was more awareness of the ease by which people go on the register, the search would not be as 'calamitous' as the article suggests. If you are an employer or college head, think about organising a talk at your workplace by one of the registries. They provide these and entering the register is as simple as providing some saliva.

meditrina · 02/07/2020 09:36

I signed up when giving blood.

When they take a few phials for testing at the start of the donation, they take one extra one and you sign one extra form and that's it.

I think you can join that way until late 50s

They really want more BAME donors. You can get matches from different heritages, but chances are much higher from your own.
