Please read and keep this thread active if possible.

www.nuh.nhs.uk/latest-news/for-many-people-with-a-blood-cancer-a-stem-cell-donor-is-their-best-chance-of-survival-however-finding-a-matching-blood-stem-cell-donor-is-not-easy-4704

Amy desperately needs a donor within the next week or so. Are you eligible?

There are four main donor registries. You only need to register to oneas the information from all registers is collated when looking for a match.

 1. The DKMS Registry (age restriction is 18 to 55 years):www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now
 1. The Anthony Nolan Registry (age restriction is 16 to 30 years):www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save-life/donate-your-stem-cells
 1. The Welsh Bone Marrow Registry (age restriction is 17 to 31 years):www.welsh-blood.org.uk/giving-blood/bone-marrow-donor-registry/
 1. The NHS British Bone Marrow Registry (eligibility determined when you attend to give a blood donation):www.bbmr.co.uk/joining-the-register/

Thank you ❤

"Females who have given birth can't register? What, ever? Well that instantly eliminates 50% of the population!"

They can register.

If you have recently given birth, then you will not be able to donate (because of the antibodies present during pregnancy, which need time to clear). But women of childbearing age can join the register.

Whether the rsistered person is healthy enough at the time a match is needed is checked very carefully. But that you might in future be temporarily unable to donate from time to time, for a non-permanent bodily reason (such as pregnancy or most illness) will not bar you from being on the register.

Already on the DKMS and really hope I can help
Some one one day 🤞🤞

VeraVioletVinn · 03/07/2020 10:14

@ALongHardWinter unfortunately RA seems to be one of the conditions that excludes you from donating (I think the drugs they give you in order to collect stem cells interact with the immune system and could put you at risk, or something like that!), regardless of current meds. I have RA too and checked. But will share with those who might be able to register.

I'm on the DKMS one already. I hope Amy finds someone.

Lovemusic33 · 03/07/2020 12:23

Already registered, just popped into say how easy it is to do and how it can change someone’s life. X
I’m a life-long anaemic

Maybe you can - it depends on your blood counts

The link below has lots of info on what is OK and what isn’t. Depression (mentioned earlier in the thread) May well be OK. It depends on severity (mild and moderate may well be OK) and type of medication

www.dkms.org.uk/en/content/who-eligible-become-potential-donor-0
I just checked the list.

I have an auto-immune disease (neurological) and a form of arthritis. It doesn't name them specifically but both are pretty rare.

Thanks, Pomegranatepompom. I've been prescribed them annually after every round of blood tests but I can't get my levels up. The GP is disbelieving but the tablets pass through me whole (don't ask). I've had liquid supplementation but it really upsets my stomach. I have hair loss as my ferritin stocks have been low for decades.

I"ve wished for decades to be able to donate but at least I've managed to get friends and family who had never donated doing so.

I'm going to ask my partner if he'd go on the register but he's nearly 60. Is there an age limit on men?

BillMasen · 03/07/2020 12:43

Thanks. Have been meaning to register and this has prompted me, so I’ve done it. Too old for 2 of those but not the first.

Dogwalks2 · 03/07/2020 12:55

Thanks for the info, I tried to sign up a few years ago for AN but was too old, have no signed up to DKNMS and awaiting my kit.

FlamedToACrisp · 04/07/2020 17:10

My Dad went to see Antony Nolan in the 1970s. Following a programme about him, some pupils at the school where he taught had collected donations. With help from the local paper, he arranged to deliver the money, and took my 7 year old sister with him.

When Antony saw her, he stared and said, "What's that?" His life had been so isolated, he had never seen a girl before.

Please help if you can.
