Meat eater here, would love to try a meat free cheeseburger! As long as it’s greasy and cheesy I think it’d be fab.

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 02/07/2020 11:13

@Bluntness100

I've never understood why non meat eaters want their food to resemble meat

I also find it odd that anyone against the meat industry wants to eat something that tastes and has the texture of meat. The whole mmm tastes like dead chicken but isn’t thing.

'Cause they like burgers? Or Chicken wraps?

Same as meat eaters really. I doubt many meat eaters are going round eating burgers purely to kill off a cow or two, they eat them because they like them.
Hmm

Someone mentioned upthread that vegetarians/vegans should support local vegan eateries etc. Shouldn't EVERYONE support local businesses? Why are only vegetarians/vegans being held to these lofty ethical standards just because they don't want to kill an animal?

I really think that for many people, this defensiveness about meat-eating and misinformation about the environmental impact, comes from people who know deep down, it's a cruel and damaging industry. But they don't want to give up burgers... so...

Enter the mock meat burger!

Come on, you can't be that dim. Do you also struggle with people drinking alcohol free beer?

Housewoes23 · 02/07/2020 11:18

reasonably I have said that before too. Meat doesn't exactly look like actual meat a lot of the time. Covered in batter, made into shapes that fit its 'container'..no animal has flat round parts to it, and I'm sure sausages are manipulated into that shape. Meat eaters don't 'own' the burger shape.

MrsTWH · 02/07/2020 11:18

I don’t like this trend for the meat-free burgers that emulate meat if they are totally replacing vegetable options. There should be room for both on a menu.
My DH is a veggie because he hates the taste of meat and all of his veggie burgers and restaurant menu options are being replaced with meat substitutes, which he finds just as gross as meat! So his options are becoming more and more limited as everywhere goes to the “beyond meat” style patties. Eating out with him now is an absolute nightmare.

McDonalds do a genuinely veggie burger/dipper things which he will eat. BK do a halloumi burger and a Bean burger. I hope they don’t replace those with meat-free meat style burgers!

RibenaMonsoon · 02/07/2020 11:26

They are making millions doing what they are already doing and would have to invest in not only the burgers but the meatless grills and equipment that come with it.

A company as big as McDonalds I'd be very surprised if they hadn't already done the market research, weighed up the costs and potential profit and decided it wasn't going to make them enough money. Especially seeing as their competitors are already doing it.

TazSyd · 02/07/2020 11:29

They do those things that are a bit like vegetable fingers. Bit meh though.

Burger King’s spicy bean burger is so much better.

Cadent · 02/07/2020 11:29

One tip if you ever have the Whopper vouchers for BK (BOGOF or £1.99 etc), even though it may not say it on the voucher, they will honour the deal for the Spicy Bean Burger.

Very handy when you’ve got a few to feed! Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/07/2020 11:32

"Grinat the meat eaters baffled by people wanting nice non meat products getting all upset upthread, you people are so funny."

As a meat eater, it's no skin off my nose if there are more and better vegetarian and vegan options. It baffled me when some people were up in arms about Greggs producing a vegetarian 'sausage' roll - if you don't want one, don't buy one - it's not like they were replacing the sausage rolls with the vegetarian version!

Cadent · 02/07/2020 11:56

The Quorn Sausage Rolls are sooooo much nicer than Greggs' vegan sausage rolls.

I agree completely

I went to get some veggie kiev from M&S and they only had the fake chicken ones 😩

And nobody ever actually addresses this point either. They just scuttle away until the next thread where they repeat the same points.
Tarantallegra · 02/07/2020 12:23

I would love this! I think it's a real shame that meat eaters get so passionate about not letting us have anything to eat, it's very sad. To be honest the only reason I even want more places to have more veggie options is so that I don't limit where my meat eating friends and family have to go to eat with me.

Housewoes23 · 02/07/2020 12:31

Yorkshire (my home county Smile ) so true.
I take ribena s point, it may not work for those reasons but it can always be rethought. I don't like the defensiveness of so many meat eaters, it is as if it really has an affect on them, when it hardly does.

I personally wouldn't ever go in there for anything other than a McPiss, but I don't ignore the fact that it is a very popular place and would be a great step forward if it was to happen, or even just the campaign could provide good publicity and other establishments may take note...And McDonald's may address it again as a result..

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 02/07/2020 13:12

Anyway I am off to make myself a nice beyond meat cheazeburger with potato smiley faces and garlic bread Smile.

TazSyd · 02/07/2020 13:22

June has been our first veggie month. We haven’t developed a taste for fake meat and have been using vegetable / bean alternatives.

The things that have been a hit are veggie bean burgers and corn fritters from Tesco and the veggie parcels from Aldi (pepper and spinach or asparagus and sweet potato).

We’ve decided that we are going to be mostly veggie with a bit of fish, going forward.

I know a lot of restaurants and take aways haven’t been open but it has made me notice how much the veggie products vary between different places.

ReasonablyUnreasonable · 02/07/2020 14:53

@Housewoes23 and @EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire

I thought I was the only one to have noticed! It never gets mentioned and it annoys me every time I see a meat-eater trying to claim a burger belongs to them! A little while back there was a news article about how we shouldn't be allowed to call our sausages 'sausages' because that is the meat. Apparently, simply writing 'vegetarian sausage' is insufficient, as far too many meat eaters were picking up the vege ones by accident. If we have to read the label, I'm sure the meat-eaters can as well!

I love the sound of your meal Yorkshire, I'm giving peanut burgers a go later...

ChangeThePassword · 02/07/2020 15:04

Glamorgan sausages in their vegetarian form have been around since the second World War and quite possibly longer.

Its a bit late to complain about it now!

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 02/07/2020 15:12

It was delicious ReasonablyUnreasonable. Tbh I was expecting someone to come back and have a go at me for daring to eat junk food. That's another thing I have noticed as well on these threads -- people getting upset at vegans who eat junk and processed food. I guess when you go vegan you're only allowed to eat lentils and carrots Grin.

FunTimes2020 · 02/07/2020 15:47

Well it is a burger place, not sure they should feel obligated to provide veggie or vegan options.

I say this as someone who is am vegetarian 😎

MitziK · 02/07/2020 15:48

It wouldn't be vegetarian or vegan anyway, just by virtue of being prepared in a MccyD's.

So pointless marketing to try and catch a trend, really.

Carouselfish · 02/07/2020 15:53

I don't see how hard it is to understand a veggie wanting their food to be like meat. Many vegetarians and vegans would love to eat meat but don't think satisfying your tastebuds is a fair trade off for torturing the heck out of animals! So if it can taste the same without involving horrific animal treatment then, yep. Simple concept.
As a pp said, even if McD did that, you'd still be giving money to a pretty shabby company, so...But yes, in principle, it'd be better than not doing it at all. Lab grown meat would be ideal when they can make it cheaply enough.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 02/07/2020 15:59

@MitziK

Do you apply the same logic to all places that sell non vegan things? If not, why not?

I'm still not sure why a vegetarian/vegan giving their money to McDonald's is worse than them giving money to any other restaurant that serves meat/animal products.

MitziK · 02/07/2020 16:16

Most restaurants, rather than fast food places, prepare vegetarian and vegan products separately to avoid cross contamination.

A MccyD food item will be intrinsically cross contaminated with meat and fish products by virtue of it being prepared in McDonalds.

For most vegetarians and vegans, that's an important aspect - not just the big headline saying VEGAN. Like a L'Oreal product labelled VEGAN shampoo but it's on sale in China so has therefore been injected into the eyes of hundreds of rabbits, it's not just about the actual physical ingredients.

I think a lot of people would be a bit pissed off about a huge company trying to collar them for money under false pretences - and jumping on the word vegan for something that most definitely isn't would be a perfect example.

Biker47 · 02/07/2020 16:17

I think vegans can only have chips and apple pie at McDonalds,so they need to get with the times.

No they don't, it's up to them what they want to develop and sell.
