Be quiet don't bother - yabu
Yes I would love a delicious meat free burger that tastes as good as my favourite cheeseburger / bigmac etc - yanbu

Same reason why non-alcoholic wine exists, because people like the taste but not the entire product.

It’s really not that difficult to understand, and I’m a certified carnivore.

Why don’t people ask why Burger King’s meat whopper customers also love their vegan whopper? Stop holding vegetarians to a higher account!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/07/2020 09:30

Personally, I wouldn't eat a meat-free burger - but more and more people do want it, and I am surprised that McDonald's don't want a share of that market.

Maybe it is a logistic issue - having to keep one grill solely for the veggie burgers? I don't know what other chains, like Burger King do - though the cynic in me wonders whether they cook their veggie burgers on the same grill as the beef burgers, and just don't tell the customers.

WineAndHobnobs · 02/07/2020 09:32

...but considerably more deforestation is taking place in order to satisfy the burgeoning vegan meal substitutes.

Nope. Not true. If you imagine a pig. To grow something to the size of the pig, the pig has to eat way more than its size over its lifetime to get that big. Does that make sense?

Cadent · 02/07/2020 09:33

@SDTG Burger King have openly said they don’t have a separate grill for their vegan whoppers. That’s a real shame but they have been honest.

McDonalds also think it would be too much change to current set up to introduce meatless burger that doesn’t touch meat burgers.

EmperorCovidula · 02/07/2020 09:40

They already have vege burgers. They’re much nicer than the meat free burgers from M&S (which we had to bin, they were absolutely vile I don’t know how you could like them). That said the beef burgers in European McDonalds are also absolutely vile so it should d easy to replicate a fake meat alternative.

WhoWants2Know · 02/07/2020 09:42

They do have the odd veggie burger, but they seem half hearted. What I actually would want is a Big Mac with the beef patties switched to veggie patties, but they don't seem to do that.

Cadent · 02/07/2020 09:43

@Emperor I doubt the meat in European McDonalds is vile. Switzerland for example only allows McDonalds to use home reared Swiss beef in its burgers. You’re not going to convince me British BigMacs are better than Swiss BigMacs.

fruitpastille · 02/07/2020 09:46

I wish they would do quorn nuggets. We're another family who might go to Mcds a bit more if there was something that veggie DS would like.

Housewoes23 · 02/07/2020 09:54

Id join this.

That post about why do vegetarians want something that resembles meat is ridiculous
It doesn't mean they dont like the concept of a burger shaped sandwich?
Maybe they like the taste but don't want to actually eat an animal?

It's 2020.

Also saying it is unethical of a vegetarian to go to McDonald's, why any more than shopping at say, tesco?

zingally · 02/07/2020 09:57

If I was meat-free (which I'm not), Maccys would be the last place I would go!

Cadent · 02/07/2020 09:58

@zingally why?

Ohtherewearethen · 02/07/2020 10:00

I can't understand why vegans would choose to eat at McDonald's as it is so contrary to their ethics and beliefs. Similar to meat eaters not demanding meat options in vegan restaurants - they wouldn't choose to eat there as they don't cater for their likes and they have differing ethics and beliefs.

Gulabjamoon · 02/07/2020 10:02

@Ohtherewearethen it’s not for you to understand. Let people be.

Housewoes23 · 02/07/2020 10:08

ohthereeweare (& others!) because it encourages restaurants to provide vegan options? Because It's nice to be able to eat out with friends? Because sometimes one might suddenly be hungry and not want to trail around looking for options? Because some towns haven't caught up and don't have vegan focused places? Because they're treating their children or on a playdate and It's nice to have something decent along with the kids? Because sometimes one might be driving home from work/night out/whatever and It's the only place open? Because McDonalds and similar debatably no worse than buying a vegan option from a supermarket or shop that also sells a lot of meat, or from a market that also houses a butcher? Because they like burgers, they're easy to pick up and eat and convenient but they don't like actual animal products? Because It's nice to be included in 'normal' and not ostracised for making ethical choices in general life?
It's not the same as a meat eater demanding it in a vegan only place because a meat eater can eat anywhere generally speaking.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 02/07/2020 10:11

What housewoes just said

I was typing similar and then i got bored with all the very obvious reasons why someone who doesn’t eat meat might find themselves in a mcdonalds

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 02/07/2020 10:12

Im not fussed about meat replacements though

Perfectly happy without, though obviously appreciate that others might like or prefer them

Ohtherewearethen · 02/07/2020 10:12

@Gulabjamoon ha ha! How patronising.
I just don't think people can start demanding that their specific dietary choices are catered for in restaurants that don't specialise in that. Yes it's great that there are more gluten free/vegetarian/vegan options in mainstream restaurants now but I can't demand that a place that sells beef and chicken products starts catering for my meat free lifestyle. Including extending kitchens to accommodate meat free products, separate utensils, etc, when I don't want to support a business that doesn't match or support my ethics and lifestyle choices. Just as I wouldn't expect a vegan restaurant to serve meat products.

contrmary · 02/07/2020 10:12

If you want a meat-free option in McDonald's, you don't want McDonald's. Go elsewhere.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 02/07/2020 10:16

I can't understand why vegans would choose to eat at McDonald's as it is so contrary to their ethics and beliefs. Similar to meat eaters not demanding meat options in vegan restaurants - they wouldn't choose to eat there as they don't cater for their likes and they have differing ethics and beliefs.

McDonalds isn’t a ‘meat’ restaurant though, it’s a burger restaurant. Veggie burgers have been around for years and years. I wouldn’t expect a vegetarian option in a steakhouse (although it would be nice) but I would expect a burger restaurant to have a decent veggie burger. Ideally two options, one ‘fake meat’ and one vegetable based one.

My closest town has no vegetarian only restaurants (let alone vegan ones!) and my closest city has one vegetarian cafe where the food is amazing but the service is awful. It’s very hard to only give your business to meat free restaurants unless you live in a big city or never eat out. My parents and my boyfriend’s daughters eat meat, it is much easier for us to go to a restaurant or order from a takeaway that has good options for both.

I also can’t believe that the debate around why (some) vegans and vegetarians like meat substitutes is still ongoing. I like the taste of chicken, I don’t like the fact that the chicken is dead. So I would like to eat something that tastes like chicken but without the death. Why is that so hard to understand?! Confused

HavingAMoan · 02/07/2020 10:16

I would like some dairy free dessert options so my dairy free child doesn’t miss out. Luckily he’s happy with a plain burger. I think the apple pie is dairy free but I’m never quite sure. I realise I haven’t answered the question!

CorianderLord · 02/07/2020 10:17

Agreed - their veggie dipper things are vile

CorianderLord · 02/07/2020 10:18

@anon5000

McDonalds is a burger restaurant so YABU.
Well yes hence why she wants a vegetarian burger - they do exist. It's not a cattle restaurant
Alltheprettyseahorses · 02/07/2020 10:18

Definitely yes and I really think there's a market for it - even your poll shows 45% Yanbu so even if it's halved for worst case representation there's a big demand. I don't know why some people are so offended by the idea. Not everything has to have meat in it. It was great when McDonalds did those proper veggie wraps in the happy meals, I've no idea why they've gone to just the goujon things instead.

Claliscool · 02/07/2020 10:19

Astonishing that anyone would consider McDonald's a 'meat specialist' restaurant.

OP posts:
CorianderLord · 02/07/2020 10:19

@Crankley

No thanks. I've never understood why non meat eaters want their food to resemble meat. Seems strange to me.
Don't want to kill an animal but like the taste, don't be thick on purpose
