I have nothing to add except that I remember their quorn burger many years ago.

It was delicious and I was fucking fuming when all the vegetarians kicked up and they removed the lovely quorn burger and replaced it with a generic, nasty, dry, tasteless ‘vegetable’ mush shaped into a burger and coated in breadcrumbs that still survives on the menu to this day!

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 02/07/2020 00:55

I've voted YANBU, because even though I'm not vegan or even veggie I do eat a lot of vegan food Smile
I love a McDonalds every now and again and the menu is a bit woeful for vegetarians.
Love the vegan wrap but a bit of variety would be nice, would be nice to at least have a burger option too!

squeekums · 02/07/2020 00:56

Do you expect vegans to only eat at vegan restaurants? How is a vegan eating at McDonalds any different to a vegan eating at Pizza Express or Frankie and Benny's or any other restaurant that servers meat and dairy

See, if its ethics your after, maccas aint your place.
It seems hypocritical to say "i dont eat meat or dairy for ethical reason but will give my money to a company that is rumored to have less than fully ethical standards"
Wouldnt you want to source the little vegan eatery who researches every single ingredient for ethics factors?

Or like I dont eat seafood, i dont go to a seafood restaurant and expect to be able to get a non seafood main meal apart from maybe chips or a salad. I see the vegan option thing as the same. I wouldnt go looking where they typically sell meat.

ClumsyFool · 02/07/2020 00:56

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire

Tbh I find it strange that so many people are so invested in what vegans eat and where we eat. So what if a vegan eats in McDonald's? How does it effect you?

I'm a vegan and I love Nando's. Sue me.

Exactly this, why do the eating habits of vegetarians or vegans promote such smug or patronising comments from people? Why does anyone give a toss?

I’m a vegetarian, couldn’t give a shiny shit what anyone else wants to eat, you want to eat a whole rack of ribs or a big juice steak? Go for it! You want to eat to eat only from the land? Go for it!

It’s just bizarre this almost obsession over why a vegetarian does or doesn’t eat this or that or at a particular place? Why would you give a fuck if it has no bearing on your life? I would never try and influence a meat eater’s food choices or comment on it as it’s absolutely none of my business so why the interest the opposite way?

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 02/07/2020 00:57

OopsIDidItAgain07
I used to LOVE veggie whoppers from BK. I wish they'd bring them back!

Are the spicy bean burgers still a thing? Not been for years and used to love those!

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 02/07/2020 01:09

I imagine a lot of vegans don't choose to eat in non vegan places though and only do so because they are with non vegan friends/family. If the vegan insisted on only eating at vegan places then I imagine the non vegans with them would get pissed off at them. I can just see the AIBU thread title now..."AIBU to think my vegan friend shouldn't make us all eat in vegan restaurants all the time?". I honestly think this is one of these situations where vegans just can't win 🤷‍♀️

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 02/07/2020 01:16

Personally I am all for supporting local vegan businesses and I do so when I can. But at the same time if we are going to reduce the amount of animals being killed for food then we need to show there is a demand for vegan food in non vegan restaurants as well. Plus when I am out with DP or my parents and they want to go to Pizza Hut or Nando's then I am not going to say no and demand they eat at the local vegan cafe instead. Besides sometimes some Nando's garlic bread (their garlic bread is vegan btw. Probably why I like going there so much 😂) covered in wild herb sauce just hits the spot.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 02/07/2020 01:21

Sorry about any typos there. My phone hates me Blush

RyanBergarasTeeth · 02/07/2020 02:22

Veggie stuff doesnt sell very well ive been told. But i always wonder why on earth kfc and the likes make a big deal out of their vegan options and vegans (for ethical reasons) buy it. How is buying a vegan meal from a company who specialises in meat ethical? I think theres already a great rise in veggie/vegan establishments as it becomes more mainstream so i dont see this as a pressing issue.

Euclid · 02/07/2020 02:27

What rubbish OP. Don't go to McDonalds for non meat options. Would you go to a fishmonger, baker or greengrocer for meat?. I don't much like McDonalds but they are entitled to sell what they have been selling for decades.
Find a vegetarian place instead or stick to the chips and salad.

WineAndHobnobs · 02/07/2020 02:37

I used to like burger king bean burgers.

Yes, me too! What happenend to them? Now if we could just get them with vegan cheeze, that would be amazing!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 02/07/2020 02:55

Are meat options available at vegan/vegetarian restaurants? If not why not? Shouldnt 'meat' places like mcdonalds have to have a wide variety of vegetarian.vegan options? Unfortunately I've never eaten at a vegan place 1 opened near me just before lockdown I'm hoping they survive this because some of the things on the menu sound delicious

Claliscool · 02/07/2020 07:37

Fascinating responses.
Has anyone tried the plant based burger from m and s? Absolutely delicious. I don't eat meat for ethical and environmental reasons but I'm not going to stop going to places that do...be great to have a decent option at somewhere so generic and popular Grin
The McMeatless classic... Can see it now....

My boss who is vegetarian went to Delhi on business and said the vegetarian range was amazing at McDonald's there.

CluelessBaker · 02/07/2020 07:49

Yes I get that meat production produces methane and endless crops go into their food consumption but considerably more deforestation is taking place in order to satisfy the burgeoning vegan meal substitutes eg soya, TVP, fungus etc...

This is just straight up false information. Don’t you feel any moral compunction to check your ‘facts’ before posting them?

70% of soy grown worldwide is fed directly to livestock. Only 6% is consumed by humans. Most of that is in Asia, where tofu is a popular protein source for meat-eaters as well as vegetarians and vegans.

It is not vegans and vegetarians consuming soy which is driving deforestation. It is very obviously meat consumption.

www.onegreenplanet.org/environment/why-tofu-consumption-is-not-responsible-for-soy-related-deforestation/

Claliscool · 02/07/2020 08:39

It's a pain that these strange non facts about soy etc circulate. From the meat industry and picked up by people keen to defend what is patently a poor choice of diet for a multitude of fairly obvious reasons?

Nottherealslimshady · 02/07/2020 08:41

God I would love a meat free big mac. All they have to do ask no bull go make smaller patties and it's all the same, I need big macs in my life again.

HollysBush · 02/07/2020 08:48

My family if four was on a longish car journey the other day and fancied MacDs. However, one of us is vegetarian and all they could have was those disappointing vegetable fingers, so we all went elsewhere.

TimeWastingButFun · 02/07/2020 08:58

No thankyou.

Shannaratiger · 02/07/2020 09:04

I was veggie 25 years ago and used to go in for a bean burger and fries, it was really lovely.

HandsOffMyRights · 02/07/2020 09:22

Does anyone remember the limited edition mini vegetable spring rolls at McDs circa 1993? By God they were delicious.

The old BK beanburger was lovely.

I'm veggie, but was vegan at one point. Don't like meat patties as I don't like the taste or texture of meat, but I know lots of people who do, so would like both a veggie and vegan burger.
Don't like it when restaurants replace veggie burgers with vegan patties. Both options are needed so vegans have options (though possibly not financially viable).

HandsOffMyRights · 02/07/2020 09:24

Oh and McDs also used to do some nice veggie fingers (like the Birds Eye ones).

Last year I ordered the vegan? goujons thinking they would be the same and happy they were back on the menu. Took one bite and gave them to my husband, who eats anything..

Bluntness100 · 02/07/2020 09:25

I've never understood why non meat eaters want their food to resemble meat

I also find it odd that anyone against the meat industry wants to eat something that tastes and has the texture of meat. The whole mmm tastes like dead chicken but isn’t thing.

lughnasadh · 02/07/2020 09:27

I've never had a veggie burger worth paying for, but the Aldi vegan Gregg's sausage roll dupes are absolutely amazing.

If McDonalds were going to branch out, I'd rather they went gluten free first. Then a triple hamburger, then a vegan patty.

Maybe the same one could be used with the breakfast and burger options.
