To think that people who 'want to switch off' from BLM are the ones who have chips on their shoulders?

I use a cloth nappy group on FB. A few days ago someone accidentally (I think, I didn't see it) made an offensive remark.

The next day one of the admins, very sensibly set up a thread for people to post educational resources relating to the BLM movement which encourage us all to think about how we can be a part of the solution rather than the problem. The issue of course, is that a lot of people don't even know that they are contributing to systemic racism.

That was fine until someone posted a comment saying this wasn't nappy related and they just wanted a space for nappies etc. After that it turned into a bit of a bun fight and got quite nasty.

There were only a few people who seemed to have this view but it left me wondering, why would someone complain about something positive that we could all learn from. Cloth nappy communities include people from BAME backgrounds (obviously) and why would you not want to take action against something that could hurt other people?

I want to switch off because I've learned, through their comments on these debates on social media, what our neighbours really think of us.

The kind woman a few doors away that always waves to my children and says hello to me on the school run thinks that George Floyd deserved to die because he had a criminal record.

The woman I've known for 6 years and considered a good friend shared far-right memes on Facebook, including one that featured a picture of a black man at a protest with the words "disgusting animal" beneath it.

BLM has been illuminating to say the least. But I am so angry and upset at the revelation that almost everyone where I live, while waving to us and being friendly, thinks we're worth less than them because of the colour of our skin, that I do want to switch off.

And move country and never see any of these cunts again

@Ygrittesnow you're the one who's had your posts deleted not me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like I said, if anyone feels that this thread is offensive then ask for it to be taken down.

With Facebook groups it's like someone's wall where you make a post then comment on it if you want right? I don't see a problem with the BLM post.

I'm on a ** group, someone made an inappropriate comment the other day. The mod deleted it then made a post about how that particular comment was wrong (with locked comments so back chat). I thought that handled it well.

Moomin8 · 01/07/2020 19:20

@KnobblyWand Sad

OP posts:
Moomin8 · 01/07/2020 19:24

Yeah @JanewaysBun I mean you can literally just scroll past and ignore it.

I suspect that the reason it was posted was as someone earlier said, that admin felt it needed to be seen to be addressed.

They have now changed the admin panel to make it more representative of different groups. Which I think is likely a good thing.

I think whatever you're angry about you don't need to direct it at me.

I’m angry - more scares really -about your cluelessness, your smugness, your gullibility, your pomposity.

You really do need to go and research this.

I am finding it more and more frightening that the BLM groups have taken the lead at what should be a positive time for anti-racism, and they’ve done it by hijackibg a man’s death, and now so many people are jumping on the dodgy bandwagon, the wrong bandwagon, and don’t even understand the differences.

Why should you care, though? This is just fluffy attention-seeking for you.

ArriettyJones · 01/07/2020 19:28

@KnobblyWand where do you live? Somewhere rural? That sounds horrible. Are you in the UK? Isn’t there a suitable city you could work in that you could relocate to?

Moomin8 · 01/07/2020 19:29

@ArriettyJones you are making assumptions about me and you actually know nothing about me.

I do not support Marxist violence etc. So do you object to people trying to make a more equitable society? The phrase 'black lives matter' means (to most people I know) that POC should not be seen as expendable by the police. I've not seen the associated stuff to do with communism.

Well just the one post. Not posts. No need for exaggeration (lies?). In response to a person who made a personal attack on me first, whom I responded to by telling them I recognised their shaming debate style, and their sound bites from a book I was reading (I did) and who was also deleted so... 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is the book for anyone whose interested. Well worth a read.

@Moomin8

If you believe in Black Lives Matter then yes you believe in a Marxist society. Do you actually know much about the movement beyond its slogan?

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 01/07/2020 19:33

YANBU. If they’re tired of #BLM imagine how much more tired black people must be living it

This!

I'm sick of people being racist whilst pretending not to be.

I've deleted people from my life let alone social media after poor George Floyd really brought what's going on to the worlds attention.

People in my life, family /friends that I'd always thought were nice, decent human beings and actually it turns out they're vile racists but of course they deny it.

Moomin8 · 01/07/2020 19:34

Ok @YgritteSnow so is your point that it is misguided to support BLM and it does more harm than good as a movement?

Or, you are fed up with hearing about racism in the UK. Some people on this thread appear to think that it only happens in the US...

Semi-rural, not far from London. I am sure it's not just our town that has all the emboldened racists out in force behind their keyboards.

None of it's been directed at us. I'm sure when this has all blown over they'll be as nice to us as they ever were.

Like I said it's been illuminating, watching these debates, but for my mental health I'm done with it.

Evidently, not enough. However, I think the admin who started the thread was only trying to address the comment made (in ignorance not maliciousness) and to open some links about how people lives can differ.

@KnobblyWand Flowers

YgritteSnow · 01/07/2020 19:41

I am just increasingly frustrated by those who don't understand how the movement has evolved and that it's no longer about George Floyd and others at all. They have no clue what BLM stands for now, how it has been taken over by something pretty sinister, yet they move so very swiftly to enjoying the opportunity to tell people they're "racist", "offensive", "got a chip on their shoulder", "should educate themselves", "check their privilege" etc, and they feel so secure that they're entitled to do so. Can you seriously not see why people might be pissed off and jaded?

I don't tell people to 'check their privilege' (and actually can see why that might get someone's back up) but I do hear a lot of people going around saying that white privilege doesn't exist. People I know in RL, unfortunately.

there is a fairly comprehensive summary of the broader aims of the BLM movement on... the BLM website (>About>What We Believe)

Indeed. I wonder how many people actually do know much about it before setting forth to educate others. Certainly worth checking out their website at the very least.

Eveta · 01/07/2020 19:52

Black lives do matter, but not to Black Lives Matter or the democrats unless they can benefit from your life.

This sums it up beautifully.
